Dracula (1958) 4K Blu-ray

Warner Archive, in association with Hammer Films, is preparing 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray releases of Terence Fisher's Dracula (1958), starring Peter Cushing, Christopher Lee, Michael Gough, Melissa Stribling, and Carol Marsh. The releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 27.

One Night Only Collector's Edition 4K Blu-ray

Universal Pictures Home Entertainment has officially announced that it will release on 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray Will Gluck's romantic dramedy One Night Only (2026), starring Monica Barbaro, Callum Turner, Bobby Cannavale, Molly Ringwald, and LeVar Burton. The two releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 20.

Gwendoline Limited Edition 4K Blu-ray

Severin Films has dated and detailed its upcoming Limited Edition 4K Blu-ray release of Just Jaeckin's Gwendoline (1984), starring Tawny Kitaen, Brent Huff, Zabou Breitman, Bernadette Lafont, and Jean Rougerie. The release is scheduled to arrive on the market on November 24.

This Week on Blu-ray: August 31-September 6

For the week of August 31st, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment will release 28 Days Later on 4K UHD. New releases include the anime series Black Butler: Emerald Witch Arc (2025) from Crunchyroll and Dry Leaf from Cinema Guild. Catalog titles on Blu-ray include Ten Women in Black and The Magnificent Cuckold from Radiance Films, while catalog titles on 4K UHD include The Hot Spot from Radiance and Tekkonkinkreet from Shout Factory and GKIDS.

An early announcement to French retailers indicates that Fox Pathé Europa will soon release three Oscar-winning titles: All about Eve (Joseph L. Mankiewicz, 1950), Boys Don't Cry (Kimberly Peirce, 1999) and Rain Man (Barry Levinson, 1988). The studio will also release Four Weddings and a Funeral (Mike Newell, 1994), which was nominated to two Academy Awards. There are no release details at the moment, other than all titles will come out in BD/DVD packs. Update: according to French site Planete HD, release date is February 16, 2011.

Shameless Enters Blu-ray, Announces New York Ripper

Specialty UK label Shameless Screen Entertainment has announced that it is going to start releasing titles on Blu-ray. Its first release will be Lucio Fulci's The New York Ripper, which is set to come out on BD in February 2011. There is no information regarding technical specifications or special features at this time.

Universal Studios Home Entertainment has announced that, on January 4, 2011, it will commercially release the 3D Blu-ray of Coraline. This 3D BD was initially offered to buyers of Panasonic 3D TVs in June 2010, and later bundled with a Panasonic 3D Essential Pack. The upcoming 3D BD will be 2D compatible, and will also include a DVD of the movie.

When Christopher Nolan's Inception was announced for Blu-ray release on December 7, many enthusiasts were disappointed that the US wasn't getting any special packaging. Now Warner Home Video has announced a limited-edition briefcase gift set, available only through WB's retail website. Price is $49.95 plus shipping (free shipping if total order is $60 or more). Paramount Home Entertainment has announced Middle Men for Blu-ray release on February 15, 2011. This movie, inspired by a true story about the rise of online pornography in the mid 1990s, stars Luke Wilson and Giovanni Ribisi. Synapse Films boss Don May Jr. has revealed to Fangoria that the company has acquired three films for Blu-ray release in 2011: the vigilante gorefest The Exterminator (James Glickenhaus, 1980); the supermarket slasher Intruder (Scott Spiegel, 1989); and the Dolph Lundgren actioner Red Scorpion (Joseph Zito, 1989). All three will have new 2K scans.

Toy Story 3 was the top-selling title on Blu-ray during the week ended November 7, according to Nielsen VideoScan. Pixar's latest production got 33% of its total optical disc sales from the Blu-ray editions: a record for a day-and-date animated title and nine percentage points more than last year's Up. The second place in Blu-ray sales for the week was for The Sound of Music. Update: sales charts added. Update 2: overall sales figures added.

Oppo BDP-93 3D Blu-ray Player Announced

Oppo Digital has officially announced its new Blu-ray player model BDP-93, the successor to the acclaimed BDP-83. As previously reported, the BDP-93 will have all the functionalities of the 83, plus support of the Blu-ray 3D specification (with dual HDMI 1.4a outputs), Netflix Watch Instantly and Blockbuster on Demand, wireless-N networking, and an eSATA port. It will carry the same retail price of $499 as the BDP-83. Availability is simply listed as "coming soon."

Universal Studios Home Entertainment has announced that, on February 8, 2011, it will release five catalog titles on Blu-ray, from the action and family genres: Barb Wire, Flipper, The River Wild, Uncle Buck and Waist Deep. According to retailer information, Vivendi Visual Entertainment will release three recent movies on Blu-ray in February 2011, from the Weinstein Company catalog. On February 1, it will release the sports drama Hurricane Season, starring Forest Whitaker; on February 15, the animated movie Hoodwinked; and on February 22, the crime thriller Killshot, starring Diane Lane and Mickey Rourke.

This claustrophobic supernatural thriller, about five people trapped in an elevator who discover that the Devil may be among them, is based on a story by M. Night Shyamalan. Lionsgate Home Entertainment has announced the 1983 movie Bad Boys for Blu-ray release on February 1, 2011. This crime drama (not to be mistaken with the 1995 Michael Bay movie of the same title), set in a violent juvenile detention center, offers a breakthrough dramatic performance from a young Sean Penn. It will be presented complete and uncut.

Warner Home Video has announced John Boorman's Excalibur for Blu-ray release on March 8, 2011. This adaptation of Sir Thomas Malory's Le Morte d'Arthur, starring Nigel Terry, Nicol Williamson and Helen Mirren, is widely acclaimed as one of the finest adaptations of the Arthurian legend. It had been released in 2006 in the defunct HD DVD format.

To put it mildly, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World had a tough time at the box office, having only pulled in half of its estimated $60M budget in domestic box office receipts. A victim of its own success, Universal wasn't able to market the quirky film correctly, and moviegoers couldn't figure if the film was another Juno or Superbad (turns out, it was neither). Whatever genre director Edgar Wright (Hot Fuzz) was aiming for is debatable, but the result is an unexpectedly great film.

The Digital Entertainment Group Europe (DEGE) has announced software sales figures for the third quarter of 2010, which reveal that Blu-ray disc sales across Europe have doubled year-on-year, with 24.7 million units sold between January and September (up 98.3% year-on-year). Year-to-date sales revenues from Blu-ray were €445 million (up 72.3% year-on-year).

This road trip/adventure movie with undertones of romantic comedy centers on two wolves from opposite sides of the social spectrum that must join forces to return to their pack.
