Dracula (1958) 4K Blu-ray

Warner Archive, in association with Hammer Films, is preparing 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray releases of Terence Fisher's Dracula (1958), starring Peter Cushing, Christopher Lee, Michael Gough, Melissa Stribling, and Carol Marsh. The releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 27.

One Night Only Collector's Edition 4K Blu-ray

Universal Pictures Home Entertainment has officially announced that it will release on 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray Will Gluck's romantic dramedy One Night Only (2026), starring Monica Barbaro, Callum Turner, Bobby Cannavale, Molly Ringwald, and LeVar Burton. The two releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 20.

Gwendoline Limited Edition 4K Blu-ray

Severin Films has dated and detailed its upcoming Limited Edition 4K Blu-ray release of Just Jaeckin's Gwendoline (1984), starring Tawny Kitaen, Brent Huff, Zabou Breitman, Bernadette Lafont, and Jean Rougerie. The release is scheduled to arrive on the market on November 24.

For the week of August 31st, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment will release 28 Days Later on 4K UHD. New releases include the anime series Black Butler: Emerald Witch Arc (2025) from Crunchyroll and Dry Leaf from Cinema Guild. Catalog titles on Blu-ray include Ten Women in Black and The Magnificent Cuckold from Radiance Films, while catalog titles on 4K UHD include The Hot Spot from Radiance and Tekkonkinkreet from Shout Factory and GKIDS.

Warner Home Video has announced Life As We Know It for Blu-ray release on February 8, 2011, in a BD/DVD/Digital Copy combo pack. In this romantic comedy, Katherine Heigl and Josh Duhamel find themselves the guardians of the daughter of their best friends who have died in a car accident. It opened theatrically in October, and despite poor reviews it earned a respectable $52 million at the box office.

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has announced The Cable Guy for Blu-ray release on March 1, 2011. This dark comedy directed by Ben Stiller stars Jim Carrey as a manic cable installer looking for a friend in hapless Matthew Broderick. Coming off Dumb and Dumber and the Ace Ventura movies, the darker tone of The Cable Guy put off audiences and it earned a comparatively low $60 million at the box office.

Universal Studios Home Entertainment has announced two catalog titles from the family genre for Blu-ray release on April 5: Babe (Chris Noonan, 1995) and Peter Pan (P.J. Hogan, 2003). Previously, on March 22, the studio will re-release a dozen of its already available Blu-ray titles as double-feature Blu-ray packs.

Echo Bridge was first with Mega Shark vs. Giant Octopus. But now Anchor Bay is going one step further and splicing both species together with Sharktopus, announced for Blu-ray release on March 15, 2011. This direct-to-video Roger Corman production, aired on SyFy, stars Eric Roberts as a geneticist who creates a half-shark, half-octopus creature as a weapon for the US Navy. Not surprisingly, the "sharktopus" breaks free and goes on a feeding frenzy off the beaches of Puerto Vallarta.

Miramax Partners with Weinstein for Blu-ray

Miramax Films and The Weinstein Company will work together to create new bonus features for Blu-ray releases of Miramax films, including roundtables featuring cast and directors. This is part of a larger partnership agreement between the two companies, which envisages producing sequels to existing Miramax titles such as Bad Santa, Rounders and Shakespeare in Love.

Starting 9.30 a.m. PST today, the Amazon-exclusive Blu-ray edition of Watchmen with Nite Owl ship packaging ("Archimedes", incidentally) will go on a Lightning Deal and will briefly be available for only $14.99 (87% off MSRP). Other two BDs with special packaging – Alice in Wonderland (with film cell photo frame) and The Dark Knight (with Batpod) will go for $19.99. Several titles (mostly Sony movies in Digibook packaging) have also been added.

Criterion Blu-ray in March: Epstein, Leigh, Malle, Schertzinger, Yang

The Criterion Collection has announced five titles for Blu-ray release in March. On March 15, the independent studio will release two acclaimed international titles: the deeply personal drama Au revoir les enfants (Louis Malle, 1987) and the family epic Yi Yi (Edward Yang, 2000). A week later, the Oscar-winning documentary The Times of Harvey Milk (Robert Epstein, 1984) will hit store shelves. And finally, on March 29, Criterion will roll out the carpet for Gilbert and Sullivan with two releases: The Mikado (Victor Schertzinger, 1939) and Topsy-Turvy (Mike Leigh, 1999).

Inception was the clear number one in Blu-ray sales during the week ended December 12, according to Nielsen VideoScan First Alert. The Twilight Saga: Eclipse was a distant second, selling under a third of what Inception did. Christopher Nolan's psychological action thriller got 65% of its total disc sales from the Blu-ray edition, pulverizing the previous record of 52% for Iron Man 2. Warner Home Video has announced King of Kings for Blu-ray release on March 29, 2011, in time for the Easter holidays. This 1961 biblical film epic, directed by Nicholas Ray and produced by Samuel Bronston, tells the life of Christ set against the tumult of Roman occupation. It stars Jeffrey Hunter as Jesus.

This celebrated music documentary, directed by D.A. Pennebaker, follows singer-songwriter Bob Dylan while on tour in Britain in 1965 and offers a candid look on the musician and the spirit of the '60s in general.

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has announced The Social Network for Blu-ray release on January 11, 2011. This movie about the creation of Facebook, directed by David Fincher, has earned wide critical acclaim and has just earned six Golden Globe nominations, including Best Drama. Enthusiasts who complained that this movie was not getting a special release by Criterion need not worry, as this BD will come in a 2-disc edition, with over three hours of bonus content.

Tamara Drewe Blu-ray Postponed

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has pulled Tamara Drewe from its release schedule; all editions (both standard-def and high-def) are affected. This comedy directed by Stephen Frears and starring Gemma Arterton was initially slated for release on February 8, 2011. A new release date has not been given. This title might resurface later as a retailer exclusive, but that is not confirmed.

Avatar 3D Blu-ray Exclusive with Panasonic until February 2012

A press officer from Panasonic UK has confirmed that the Avatar 3D Blu-ray bundle deal between the consumer electronics manufacturer and 20th Century Fox "does run until Feb 2012." This is the first official confirmation of the duration of the exclusivity period, during which the 3D BD version of James Cameron's sci-fi epic will only be available to buyers of Panasonic 3D equipment (specific hardware required varies depending on territory).

Universum Film has announced that on March 4, 2011 it will release the Robert Rodriguez / Quentin Tarantino double feature Grindhouse on a Blu-ray edition in SteelBook packaging. Apart from the case, there is a more substantive improvement: the film's soundtrack will be in DTS-HD 5.1 and 2.0 (both in English and German), unlike the US and UK editions, which only have a Dolby Digital soundtrack. There is no information regarding region coding.

BFI Announces More Ozu on Blu-ray

BFI Video has announced that, on January 17, 2011, it will release two more Blu-ray titles as part of The Ozu Collection: Equinox Flower (Higanbana, 1958), Ozu's first color film, and Good Morning (Ohayo, 1959). Both will be presented in two-disc Dual format (BD/DVD) editions. Additionally, each feature will be accompanied by an early Ozu film that has never been available in the UK before.
