Dracula (1958) 4K Blu-ray

Warner Archive, in association with Hammer Films, is preparing 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray releases of Terence Fisher's Dracula (1958), starring Peter Cushing, Christopher Lee, Michael Gough, Melissa Stribling, and Carol Marsh. The releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 27.

One Night Only Collector's Edition 4K Blu-ray

Universal Pictures Home Entertainment has officially announced that it will release on 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray Will Gluck's romantic dramedy One Night Only (2026), starring Monica Barbaro, Callum Turner, Bobby Cannavale, Molly Ringwald, and LeVar Burton. The two releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 20.

Gwendoline Limited Edition 4K Blu-ray

Severin Films has dated and detailed its upcoming Limited Edition 4K Blu-ray release of Just Jaeckin's Gwendoline (1984), starring Tawny Kitaen, Brent Huff, Zabou Breitman, Bernadette Lafont, and Jean Rougerie. The release is scheduled to arrive on the market on November 24.

This Week on Blu-ray: August 31-September 6

For the week of August 31st, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment will release 28 Days Later on 4K UHD. New releases include the anime series Black Butler: Emerald Witch Arc (2025) from Crunchyroll and Dry Leaf from Cinema Guild. Catalog titles on Blu-ray include Ten Women in Black and The Magnificent Cuckold from Radiance Films, while catalog titles on 4K UHD include The Hot Spot from Radiance and Tekkonkinkreet from Shout Factory and GKIDS.

Marmaduke Blu-ray Announced in the UK

The UK branch of Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment has officially announced Marmaduke for Blu-ray release on February 14, on a "Triple Play" (BD/DVD/Digital Copy) combo pack. This family movie stars a good-natured Great Dane (voiced by Owen Wilson) that moves to a new neighborhood and causes "fur-flying chaos" wherever he goes.

Blu-ray Sales, Jan. 3-9: Machete Kills Schmucks

Machete was easily the top-selling title on Blu-ray during the week ending January 9, according to Nielsen VideoScan. Robert Rodriguez's exploitation extravaganza also got 41% of its total sales from the BD edition. On the other hand, Dinner for Schmucks only made it to number 5, despite multiple promotions and coupons in place.

Daylight Blu-ray Announced

Universal Studios Home Entertainment has announced Daylight for Blu-ray release on April 26. This 1996 action movie starring Sylvester Stallone and directed by Rob Cohen had been released in 2007 on the defunct HD DVD format. The BD will be presented in a single-sided BD50 disc, and will include a lossless audio track.

Skyline Blu-ray Announced

Universal Studios Home Entertainment has announced Skyline for Blu-ray release on March 15. In this science fiction film, directed and produced by the Brothers Strause (Aliens vs. Predator Requiem), an extraterrestrial force descends upon Los Angeles, threatening the entire human population.

The Crowded Day / Song of Paris Blu-ray Announced

BFI Video has announced the third release from the its Adelphi Collection for release on February 14: The Crowded Day / Song of Paris, a vintage double bill of drama and comedy from British director John Guillermin (Death on the Nile, The Towering Inferno), released for the very first time, in a Dual Format Edition with Blu-ray and DVD discs of both films.

Dead Space: Aftermath UK Blu-ray Announced

Anchor Bay Entertainment and Manga have announced Dead Space: Aftermath, the new animated horror film companion to the Dead Space 2, available on Blu-ray in the UK from January 24 2011, in association with Film Roman and Electronic Arts. A movie double pack containing both Dead Space features (Dead Space: Downfall and Dead Space: Aftermath) will also be available on the same day.

Morning Glory Blu-ray Announced

Paramount Home Entertainment has announced Morning Glory for Blu-ray release on March 8. This comedy, set in the world of television production, stars Rachel McAdams, Harrison Ford and Diane Keaton. It opened in theaters in November 2010 and earned $30 million at the box office.

Lolita, Barry Lyndon Blu-ray Coming Up in France

The French branch of Warner Home Video has announced that, on May 18, it will release Lolita and Barry Lyndon. These are the two only Stanley Kubrick movies in WHV's library that for some reason hadn't seen a high-definition release back in 2007. Edition details are unknown as of yet.

Close Encounters Blu-ray Re-release in Essential Collection

On February 14, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment will re-release Steven Spielberg's Close Encounters of the Third Kind as part of the "Blu-ray Essentials" collection. This edition will consist of two discs and will include all the disc-based special features from the 30th Anniversary Ultimate Edition, but not the "A View from Above" mini-poster, or the collectible booklet. List price is $19.99.

Audiovox Introduces Industry's First In-Car Blu-ray Player

At the CES electronics fair, Audiovox Corporation announced the introduction of the industry's first automotive (in-car) Blu-ray Disc player that plays any Blu-ray Discs as well as traditional DVDs and CD Audio Discs. The AVDBR1 is priced at $349.99 and will be available in spring. It is installed under the seat or in a storage compartment in the vehicle and connects to any monitor by using either the HDMI, composite or component output.

The Ten Commandments Blu-ray Detailed

Paramount Home Entertainment has revealed the full release details for Cecil B. DeMille's The Ten Commandments, which, as reported yesterday, will come out on Blu-ray on March 29 in two editions: a two-disc Blu-ray edition and a six-disc, limited-edition Blu-ray/DVD combo gift set, the latter of which will prominently include the silent 1923 version of The Ten Commandments in high definition and more.

Blood Blu-ray Announced

Well Go USA has announced today that it has acquired North American Blu-ray rights to the Japanese horror movie Blood and that it will release it on BD on March 15. Blood, starring Aya Sugimoto (Flower & Snake, Flower & Snake II) and Guts Ishimatsu (Black Rain, Empire of the Sun) and directed by Ten Shimoyama, director of the international hit Shinobi: Heart Under Blade, mixes "erotic" vampires with ancient Samurai warriors.

Late March Blu-ray Catalog Wave from Paramount, Including The Ten Commandments

Paramount Home Entertainment has announced three catalog titles for Blu-ray release on March 29: Charlotte's Web, The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie and The Ten Commandments. Cecil B. DeMille's 1956 biblical epic, in particular, will benefit from an all-new restoration and will come out both in a regular and a BD/DVD gift set release, the latter of which will include the silent version from 1923.

MGM Blu-ray Catalog Wave at Target

According to several forum members, Target will soon exclusively offer seven Blu-ray catalog titles from the MGM library, including The Cutting Edge, A Fistful of Dollars, For a Few Dollars More (previously only available as part of The Man with No Name Trilogy), Four Weddings and a Funeral, Honeymoon in Vegas, The Magnificent Seven, and Overboard.

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has announced S.W.A.T. Firefight for Blu-ray release on March 1. This direct-to-video action/crime thriller stars Gabriel Macht as a Los Angeles S.W.A.T. officer who is sent to Detroit, and Robert Patrick as a government assassin obsessed with terminating him and his team.

Warner Home Video has announced Due Date for Blu-ray release on February 22, 2011, in a BD/DVD/Digital Copy Combo Pack. This comedy road movie directed by Todd Phillips, stars Robert Downey Jr. and Zach Galifianakis. It made just under $100 million at the box office – not bad, but nowhere near the phenomenal success of The Hangover.

Video Clips from Fox Blu-ray Events at CES

Two of the major Blu-ray related events from the just closed 2011 CES fair took place thanks to 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment: the director's panel discussing the filmmakers' vision of Blu-ray, and the BD announcement of Star Wars: The Complete Saga. For its Blu-ray deal of the week, Amazon is offering The Last of the Mohicans for $14.99 (57% off MSRP). This price is valid through January 15. Apparently, Amazon's deal of the week can now include single-disc titles rather than only box sets, as it used to do.

Disney/PIXAR's The Incredibles Blu-ray Coming April 12

An early announcement to retailers indicates that on April 12, 2011, Walt Disney Home Entertainment will bring the Brad Bird animated Pixar film The Incredibles to Blu-ray Disc. The studio will release the title as a 4-disc set comprised of two Blu-ray discs, a DVD, and a Digital Copy with a suggested price of $45.99.

Dreamworks and Samsung Expand 3D Alliance; Megamind 3D Blu-ray Another Samsung Exclusive

At the CES show in Las Vegas, Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. and DreamWorks Animation SKG, Inc. announced that the two leaders of technology and entertainment are "joining forces for more immersive entertainment experiences" in 2011. Consumers who purchase a new Samsung 3D TV will gain exclusive access to two of DWA's new 3D Blu-ray titles, including Megamind, which will be made available in 2011. DWA and Samsung also intend to explore joint research and development activities and a number of expanded co-marketing initiatives throughout the year.

The Girl Who Played with Fire UK Blu-ray Detailed

On January 10, Momentum Home Entertainment will release the Blu-ray edition of The Girl Who Played with Fire, the screen adaptation of the second installment of Stieg Larsson's Millennium trilogy. DEG: $2.3 Billion Revenue from Blu-ray in 2010, 11 Million BD Players Sold

According to the Digital Entertainment Group (DEG), Blu-ray software sales rose 68% in 2010, with $1.8 billion sales revenue. BD rentals were also up 24% in brick-and-mortar outlets. Regarding hardware, 11.25 million Blu-ray playback devices – including set-top players and game consoles – sold in calendar 2010 (six million of them in the fourth quarter).

As anticipated, 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment officially announced today the Blu-ray release of Star Wars for September 2011. The studio will release the saga in three distinct sets "to meet the needs of every Star Wars fan:" Star Wars: The Complete Saga (a nine-disc set including all six films, priced at $139.99; Star Wars: Prequel Trilogy (a three-disc set including Episodes I-III, priced at $69.99); and Star Wars: Original Trilogy (a three-disc set including Episodes IV-VI, priced at $69.99). At the CES show in Las Vegas, LG Electronics introduced its 2011 lineup of Network Blu-ray Disc Players and Home Theater Systems. Leading the lineup is LG's BD690 3D-capable Network BD player with LG SmartTV and an integrated 250-GB hard drive, allowing for easy storage and instant playback of music, photos, personal videos and online movies from VUDU.

Panasonic Introduces New Blu-ray Player Lineup

At the CES show in Las Vegas Panasonic Corporation introduced an expanded Blu-ray Disc player lineup with four new Blu-ray players, three of them 3D compatible, three 3D home theater systems, and a new portable BD player. The new models introduce Skype video/voice communication, Touch-Free sensor, iPhone remote feature, built-in WiFi and reduced power consumption. They will be available in the spring.
