The week ending 05/01/11 did not offer any significant new releases, and
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1 managed to remain the top seller on the Blu-ray sales chart for a third consecutive week. Strong Blu-ray sales for
Deathly Hallows: Part 1 and
Tron: Legacy have been the driving force behind the recent record setting trend for the format. Previous to the week ending 04/24/2011, blu-ray sales as market share of total package media sales, registered successive weekly records of 25%, 26%, and 27% respectively.
Oscar winner
The King's Speech climbed to the number two spot in the sales chart in its second week of release. Blu-ray Disc sales of
King's Speech were approximately only 25% of the total recorded by
Deathly Hallows: Part 1.
South Park: The Complete Fourteenth Season Uncensored was number six in the overall home video sales chart, but only reached number 15 in the Blu-ray sales chart with 22% of total sales coming from the HD format.
After a lackluster start to 2011, packaged home video sales have started to make positive headlines once again. The
Harry Potter franchise has always been a dependable revenue generating blockbuster for Warner Brothers and the 7th installment in the series has proven to be a sales juggernaut. With the home entertainment business receiving a boost from increased consumer spending, Blu-ray's influence on disc sales will continue to rise.
