Blu-ray Sales: August 16-22: Project Hail Mary Grabs Achilles' Heel in Week Two

For the week that ended on August 22nd, Alliance Entertainment's Project Hail Mary topped the Blu-ray-only, overall packaged media and 4K UHD charts for the second week in a row. Second place went to Troy, which was released on remastered Blu-ray and 4K UHD by Arrow Video, while third place on the Blu-ray-only chart went to Universal Pictures Home Entertainment's Obsession (2025).

This Week on Blu-ray: August 31-September 6

For the week of August 31st, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment will release 28 Days Later on 4K UHD. New releases include the anime series Black Butler: Emerald Witch Arc (2025) from Crunchyroll and Dry Leaf from Cinema Guild. Catalog titles on Blu-ray include Ten Women in Black and The Magnificent Cuckold from Radiance Films, while catalog titles on 4K UHD include The Hot Spot from Radiance and Tekkonkinkreet from Shout Factory and GKIDS.

Scream Factory and Shout Factory have announced their November batch of releases. They are: The Chow Yun-Fat Collection Volume One, The Family Man (2000), Women in Prison Collection (1971-1985), and The Transformers: The Movie (1986).

Ice Cream Man 4K Blu-ray

Alliance Entertainment is preparing 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray releases of Eli Roth's Ice Cream Man (2026), starring Ari Millen, Charlie Zeltzer, Shiloh O'Reilly, Sarah Abbott, and Benjamin Byron Davis. The two releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 20.

The Rock 30th Anniversary 4K Blu-ray

In another early announcement, Warner Bros. Home Entertainment has revealed the Blu-ray release of the 2006 original animated movie, Superman: Brainiac Attacks, which features the voice talents of Tim Daly, Dana Delany, Lance Henriksen and Powers Boothe. Lex Luthor and Brainiac join forces in high definition on March 12, 2013.

During the week that ended on November 25th, the home media market enjoyed robust sales throughout Thanksgiving week, with Black Friday and Cyber Monday two particular highlights. Walt Disney Home Entertainment's Brave definitely benefited from both online and brick-and-mortar retailers' many deals, as it yet again topped the Blu-ray-only and overall package media charts.

Warner Bros. Home Entertainment has announced the Blu-ray release of four 2003-2009 Warner Bros. Animation Scooby-Doo! movies: Scooby-Doo and the Legend of the Vampire, Scooby-Doo and the Monster of Mexico, Scooby-Doo and the Loch Ness Monster and Scooby-Doo and the Samurai Sword. All four mysteries arrive on Blu-ray on March 12, 2013.

Independent distributors Cult Epics have revealed that they are preparing a Special Edition Blu-ray of Italian director Tinto Brass' Fallo! a.k.a Private (2003), starring Sara Cosmi, Massimiliano Caroletti and William De Vito. The preliminary release date set by the distributors is May 21.

Warner Bros and Village Roadshow Extend Partnership

Warner Bros and Village Roadshow announced that they have extended their partnership until 2017. Village Roadshow has also secured $1.125 billion to finance future projects. Village Roadshow has produced 72 movies since its founding 15 years ago, and 68 of them have been distributed by Warner Bros. The two companies became partners in 1997.

Independent U.S. distributors Strand Releasing have acquired the U.S. distribution to acclaimed Mexican director Carlos Reygadas' latest film, Post Tenebras Lux (2012), starring Adolfo Jiménez Castro, Nathalia Acevedo and Willebaldo Torres. The film will have a limited theatrical release in 2013.

Through December 1st, Amazon is offering these sets for, in Home Alone's case, a 52% discount from its SRP of $24.99, and, in Star Trek's case, a 60% discount from its SRP of $321.99.

In terms of volume alone, the week of November 27th doesn't offer that many new Blu-ray releases, but there are definitely some gems within this limited selection. Case in point: Anchor Bay's version Lawless disc. An adaptation of Matt Bondurant's historical novel The Wettest County in the World, the film centers on a bootlegging Virginia family trying to find success during the Depression.
