This Week on Blu-ray: August 31-September 6

For the week of August 31st, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment will release 28 Days Later on 4K UHD. New releases include the anime series Black Butler: Emerald Witch Arc (2025) from Crunchyroll and Dry Leaf from Cinema Guild. Catalog titles on Blu-ray include Ten Women in Black and The Magnificent Cuckold from Radiance Films, while catalog titles on 4K UHD include The Hot Spot from Radiance and Tekkonkinkreet from Shout Factory and GKIDS.

Scream Factory and Shout Factory have announced their November batch of releases. They are: The Chow Yun-Fat Collection Volume One, The Family Man (2000), Women in Prison Collection (1971-1985), and The Transformers: The Movie (1986).

Ice Cream Man 4K Blu-ray

Alliance Entertainment is preparing 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray releases of Eli Roth's Ice Cream Man (2026), starring Ari Millen, Charlie Zeltzer, Shiloh O'Reilly, Sarah Abbott, and Benjamin Byron Davis. The two releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 20.

The Rock 30th Anniversary 4K Blu-ray

Twentieth Century Studios plans to celebrate the 30th anniversary of Michael Bay's The Rock (1996) with a new combo pack release, which is expected to arrive on the market before the end of the year.

Star Wars Limited Edition SteelBooks

Lucasfilm and Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment announced today that they are planning to release the Star Wars trilogy collections as Limited Edition SteelBooks in the United Kingdom. Exact technical specs and region coding status for these upcoming releases are yet to be revealed, but the preliminary release date set by the studios is April 8th.

First Hannibal Trailer Released

The first trailer for NBC's upcoming TV series Hannibal has been released. Created by Bryan Fuller (TV's Pushing Daises, Dead Like Me) and starring Mads Mikkelsen, Hugh Dancy, Laurence Fishburne, Caroline Dhavernas, and Lara Jean Chorostecki, the show will premiere Thursday, April 4 at 10 p.m.

British distributors Odeon Entertainment will bring to Blu-ray director Piers Haggard's cult horror thriller Blood on Satan's Claw (1971), starring Patrick Wymark, Linda Hayden, Barry Andrews. The preliminary release date set by the distributors is April 22.

Giant Ape Media, a division of FUNimation Entertainment, will release a combo pack edition of director Kenneth Bi's Girl$ (2010), starring Bonnie Sin Sik-La, Michelle Wai, Venus Wong Man-Yik, and Una Lin Yu-Hsuan. The release will be available for purchase on April 16th.

Blancanieves Wins Big at the Goya Awards

Pablo Berger's film Blancanieves, which was selected to represent Spain at the Academy Awards, won ten awards at the Spanish Film Academy's Goya Awards, including Best Film, Best Actress (Maribel Verdú), Best New Actress (Macarena García). The Best Director award went to Antonio Bayona for his excellent drama The Impossible.

My Neighbor Totoro & Howl's Moving Castle Blu-rays

Walt Disney Home Entertainment has revealed its plans to bring two classic Studio Ghibli animated films to Blu-ray this Spring: My Neighbor Totoro and Howl's Moving Castle. While technical specifications and special features have yet to be detailed, both titles are available for pre-order and street on May 21st.

Last Exile: Fam, The Silver Wing Blu-rays (Updated)

FUNimation Entertainment detailed the Blu-ray/DVD Combo Pack releases of Last Exile: Fam, The Silver Wing Part 1 and Part 2 at KatsuCon. The 21-episode series sets include one bonus episode each, and, with a recent delay, now street on September 10th.

For the week of February 19th, HBO Home Entertainment is bringing Game of Thrones: The Complete Second Season to Blu-ray. With its attention-grabbing sex and violence and complex fantasy enviroment, the first season proved itself one of HBO's breakout hits, and this sophomore year maintains the series' popularity, despite some issues.

IFC Acquires Controversial Lindsay Lohan Film The Canyons

IFC Films announced today that it has acquired the North American distribution rights to The Canyons (2012), the controversial thriller directed by Paul Schrader (the screenwriter of the cult Taxi Driver) and written by Bret Easton Ellis (American Psycho). IFC plans to have the film in theaters across the U.S. in early summer.

Cleopatra 50th Anniversary Edition Blu-ray Available for Pre-Order

20th Century Fox Home Entertainment is yet to officially announce and detail its upcoming 50th Anniversary Blu-ray editions of Joseph L. Mankiewicz's legendary Cleopatra, but Amazon already has them available for pre-order. Early retail information indicates that Fox will release Limited DigiBook and standard Blu-ray editions of the epic film.

Well Go USA Acquires New World

Texas-based independent distributors Well Go USA have acquired the North American distribution rights to Korean director Park Hoon-Jung's action thriller New World (2012), starring Choi Min-Sik, Hwang Jung-Min, Lee Jung-Jae, and Song Ji-Hyo. The film will open in select metropolitan areas on March 22.

Criterion Announces May Titles

The Criterion Collection has announced five titles for Blu-ray release in May. On May 7th, the studio will release Jean-Luc Godard's Band of Outsiders (1964). On My 14th, it will release Delmer Daves' Jubal (1956) and 3:10 to Yuma (1957). A week later, it will release Haskell Wexler's Medium Cool (1969). And on May 28th, it will release Mike Leigh's Life is Sweet (1990).

Maniac UK Poster, Stills and Trailer

Independent British distributors Metrodome Video have sent us the official quad poster and trailer for director Franck Khalfoun's Maniac (2012), starring Elijah Wood, America Olivo, Nora Arnezeder, and Sammi Rotibi. The film, which is a remake of William Lustig's 1980 cult slasher, is set to open in local cinemas on March 15th.

The UK branch of Universal Studios has revealed that it is planning to bring to Blu-ray acclaimed director Jim Sheridan's In the Name of the Father (1993), starring Daniel Day-Lewis, Pete Postlethwaite, and Alison Crosbie. The preliminary release date set by the studio is June 3rd.

Amongst the films that will get the HD treatment are A Virgin Among the Living Dead, The Demons, The Awful Dr. Orloff, The Erotic Rites of Frankenstein, Nightmares Come at Night and the never before released Les Chatouilleuses a.k.a Crazy Nuns.
