Dracula (1958) 4K Blu-ray

Warner Archive, in association with Hammer Films, is preparing 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray releases of Terence Fisher's Dracula (1958), starring Peter Cushing, Christopher Lee, Michael Gough, Melissa Stribling, and Carol Marsh. The releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 27.

One Night Only Collector's Edition 4K Blu-ray

Universal Pictures Home Entertainment has officially announced that it will release on 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray Will Gluck's romantic dramedy One Night Only (2026), starring Monica Barbaro, Callum Turner, Bobby Cannavale, Molly Ringwald, and LeVar Burton. The two releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 20.

Gwendoline Limited Edition 4K Blu-ray

Severin Films has dated and detailed its upcoming Limited Edition 4K Blu-ray release of Just Jaeckin's Gwendoline (1984), starring Tawny Kitaen, Brent Huff, Zabou Breitman, Bernadette Lafont, and Jean Rougerie. The release is scheduled to arrive on the market on November 24.

This Week on Blu-ray: August 31-September 6

For the week of August 31st, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment will release 28 Days Later on 4K UHD. New releases include the anime series Black Butler: Emerald Witch Arc (2025) from Crunchyroll and Dry Leaf from Cinema Guild. Catalog titles on Blu-ray include Ten Women in Black and The Magnificent Cuckold from Radiance Films, while catalog titles on 4K UHD include The Hot Spot from Radiance and Tekkonkinkreet from Shout Factory and GKIDS.

Nights of Rodanthe Coming to Blu-ray

New Line Home Entertainment in conjunction with Warner Home Video has announced that they will bring 'Nights in Rodanthe' to Blu-ray on February 10th, day-and-date with the DVD release. Technical specs for this Richard Gere and Diane Lane film have yet to be announced, but you can expect to see 1080p VC-1 video.

Author Stephen King is generally known as the king of horror, and many of his novels have gone on to become very successful horror films. And it is that generalization that catches most people off-guard when they find out that one his short stories was the inspiration for 'The Shawshank Redemption', one of the greatest films ever created. Sure, "film critics" are more likely to select films such as 'Citizen Kane' or 'Casablanca' as the best of the best, but movie watcher lists, such as IMDb's Top 250, will place this modern masterpiece at the top.

Image Announces New Titles

Image Entertainment has announced some more titles which they plan to release early next year. On February 10th, they will release 'Grand Canyon Adventure: River at Risk', an IMAX feature with narration from Robert Redford and music from Dave Matthews Band. It comes out the same day as the previous announced IMAX title 'Hurricane On The Bayou'.

Fox Home Entertainment has revealed the technical specs and special features for the upcoming Blu-ray release of 'Sideways', which is due to hit store shelves on February 3rd. This critically acclaimed comedy will come on a BD-50 featuring 1.85:1 1080p AVC accompanied by a 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack.

Studios Link Overseas Distro Deals

Sony Pictures is the latest studio to pull out of Korea after facing a shrinking market due to rampant piracy of films. Similar to a move made by Warner Brothers a few months back, Sony will no longer distribute titles in Korea, and has sold distribution rights to United Entertainment Korea (who also holds distribution rights for Universal films as well).

The Dark Knight BD-Live Features Explained

Warner Home Video has revealed the BD-Live features that will be included in the upcoming Blu-ray release of 'The Dark Knight', which is due to hit store shelves on December 9th, day-and-date with the DVD release. The first feature will be a "Live Community Screening" where users will be able to watch the movie with friends and chat with each other during the screening. You can either send out invitations to friends, or just join in with the entire BD-Live community.

The Guard Post Coming to the UK

Cine Asia has announced that they will bring 'The Guard Post', which is also known as 'G.P. 506', to Blu-ray on December 29th. The film comes from acclaimed Korean director Su-chang Kong whose film 'R-Point' received rave reviews. No technical specs have been announced for this release at this time.

Kevin Smith Pitches Chasing Amy Blu-ray

Writer/director/actor Kevin Smith has sent a proposal to Criterion for a Blu-ray release of his film 'Chasing Amy'. The filmmaker always had planned for a super 10-year anniversary release (much like the one completed for his earlier films 'Clerks' and 'Mallrat'), but Criterion has stated they refuse to double-dip (history, however, may disagree with that statement). So now he is proposing a Blu-ray release with all the added material, meaning it wouldn't technically be a double-dip of the DVD release.

Saw V and Repo! Coming to Blu-ray

Lionsgate Home Entertainment has revealed that they will bring the horror films 'Saw V' and 'Repo! The Genetic Opera' to Blu-ray on January 20th, day-and-date with the DVD releases. Technical specs have yet to be revealed at this time, though you can expect the typical AVC video and DTS-HD Master Audio soundtracks from the studio.

Beverly Hills Chihuahua Announced for Blu-ray

Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment has announced that they will bring the surprise hit film 'Beverly Hills Chihuahua' to Blu-ray on March 3rd, day-and-date with the DVD release. Video will be presented in 2.40:1 1080p AVC accompanied by 5.1 24bit lossless audio, likely making use of the DTS-HD Master Audio codec.

Black Friday is Turning Blu

As many of you know, the holiday shopping season doesn't really kick off until Black Friday - the day after Thanksgiving were retailers dramatically reduce prices in order to increase profits (out of the red, and into the black). As the hot item this holiday season, Blu-ray isn't immune to these sales. Forum members have been tracking sale items all week, and have compiled a great list of Blu-ray movies and players at ridiculously low prices.

Koch Entertainment has announced that they will bring the 1937 animated classic 'Gulliver's Travels' to Blu-ray on March 10th, day-and-date with the DVD re-release. No technical specs or special features have been announced for the release at this time, though previous Koch releases have made use of 1080p AVC video encodes.

Warner Announces Two John Grisham Films

Warner Home Video has announced that they will release two John Grisham inspired films 'The Pelican Brief' and 'A Time to Kill' for Blu-ray on February 10th. Both films will come on BD-25s featuring 1080p VC-1 accompanied by 5.1 Dolby TrueHD soundtracks. The sole extra feature on both releases in a theatrical trailer.

HDvision Invades France

The people who brought you DVDvision have once again joined forces to release HDvision, a French magazine which focuses exclusive on Blu-ray and high definition movies. Similar to their original mag, this high definition version comes with a free Blu-ray disc in every issue. The magazine is only available in French (foreign purchases are welcome), and is available online or at select retailers.

Sigma Reveals Turn-Key Blu-ray Platform

Sigma Designs revealed their "Blu-ray 8644" Blu-ray player reference design at the BDA seminar in Shenzhen, China this week. It is a complete, turn-key hardware and software solution, meaning that it allows manufacturer to quickly go into production. All the work has been done ahead of time, so if the manufacturer chooses, they can go straight to production of their own Blu-ray disc player.

Early advertisement material has revealed that 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment will bring the Mark Wahlberg video game-based film 'Max Payne' in its unrated form to Blu-ray on January 20th, day-and-date with the DVD release. Technical specs have not been announced at this time, but you can expect the typical 1080p AVC and DTS-HD Master Audio treatment from the studio.

Both of these titles were previously available on the HD DVD format, though it does not appear they will be direct ports to Blu-ray. Panasonic Submits 3D Blu-ray Proposal to BDA for 2010

Panasonic has officially submitted a proposal for 3D implementation on the Blu-ray format. Their submission is based on the system which was first shown during CEATEC earlier this year, and requires the use of special glasses which convert two separate 1080i60 video streams into one 1080p24 3D image.

Legendary Heroes has revealed that they have begun taking pre-orders for 'Highlander Season 1', which is due to be released on February 15th. The set will include all 22 episodes from the first season, and the first 1000 who placed an order for the set (which will only be available through Legendary Heroes) also get a Duncan Katana Mini-Sword.

Quo Vadis Announced for Blu-ray Release

Warner Home Video has announced that they will bring the epic film 'Quo Vadis' to Blu-ray on March 17th. This title has already been released on Blu-ray by Warner in both Japan and Korea, and it is widely assumed that the US release will share their technical specs of coming on a BD-50 and utilizing 1080p VC-1 video accompanied by a Dolby Digital mono soundtrack.
