Dracula (1958) 4K Blu-ray

Warner Archive, in association with Hammer Films, is preparing 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray releases of Terence Fisher's Dracula (1958), starring Peter Cushing, Christopher Lee, Michael Gough, Melissa Stribling, and Carol Marsh. The releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 27.

One Night Only Collector's Edition 4K Blu-ray

Universal Pictures Home Entertainment has officially announced that it will release on 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray Will Gluck's romantic dramedy One Night Only (2026), starring Monica Barbaro, Callum Turner, Bobby Cannavale, Molly Ringwald, and LeVar Burton. The two releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 20.

Gwendoline Limited Edition 4K Blu-ray

Severin Films has dated and detailed its upcoming Limited Edition 4K Blu-ray release of Just Jaeckin's Gwendoline (1984), starring Tawny Kitaen, Brent Huff, Zabou Breitman, Bernadette Lafont, and Jean Rougerie. The release is scheduled to arrive on the market on November 24.

For the week of August 31st, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment will release 28 Days Later on 4K UHD. New releases include the anime series Black Butler: Emerald Witch Arc (2025) from Crunchyroll and Dry Leaf from Cinema Guild. Catalog titles on Blu-ray include Ten Women in Black and The Magnificent Cuckold from Radiance Films, while catalog titles on 4K UHD include The Hot Spot from Radiance and Tekkonkinkreet from Shout Factory and GKIDS.

Blu-ray Sales, November 15-21: Avatar Returns

According to data from Nielsen VideoScan, Avatar: Extended Collector's Edition was the top-selling title on Blu-ray during the week ended November 21, narrowly outselling A Christmas Carol. In overall packaged media, the places were reversed. The special edition re-release of James Cameron's epic got 50% of its sales from the Blu-ray version, a record for a day-and-date BD release without a bundled DVD copy.

Amazon.com has announced the launch of Amazon.it, an Italian-language website offering customers "a vast selection of books, DVDs, video games, music and consumer electronics at everyday low prices." Launching with more categories than any other Amazon web site has launched with, the selection also includes computers, software, small home appliances, watches and toys. Amazon.it's services include Amazon Prime, the membership program with unlimited free guaranteed 2-3-day delivery at an annual fee of 9.99 Euros.

Warner Home Video has announced the Dungeons & Dragons 2-Movie Collection, inspired on the famous role-playing game of the same title, for Blu-ray release on February 15, 2011. MGM Home Entertainment, in conjunction with 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment, has announced Dances with Wolves: 20th Anniversary Edition for Blu-ray release on January 11, 2011. This western, directed by and starring Kevin Costner, received critical acclaim, winning seven Academy Awards in 1990 including Best Director, Best Cinematography, Best Sound and Best Picture. The movie will be presented in its extended cut, with 50 minutes of extra footage, with a 7.1 DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack.

Anchor Bay Home Entertainment has announced Let Me In for Blu-ray release on February 1, 2011. This English-language remake of the Swedish horror thriller Let The Right One In, directed by Matt Reeves (Cloverfield), stars Kodi Smit-McPhee (The Road) and Chloë Moretz (Kick-Ass). Netflix Raises Subscription Rates Again (Update)

Just a month after announcing skyrocketing revenues and total subscribers, Netflix has announced that it is going to increase subscription rates for the third time in two years, by as much as 14%: $1 for the one and two DVDs at a time; $3 for the three DVDs at at a time, and so on, all the way up to to $8 for the eight DVDs at a time. The additional monthly charge for Blu-ray access is unchanged. Update: corrected new prices added.

Synapse Films has announced the Portuguese-language horror film Embodiment of Evil (Encarnação do Demônio) for Blu-ray release on February 8, 2011, in a BD/DVD combo pack edition. This is the third film of the "Coffin Joe Trilogy," which began with At Midnight I'll Take Your Soul (1964) and This Night I'll Possess Your Corpse (1967). It is presented in a high-definition transfer created from the original camera negative.

A Woman, a Gun and a Noodle Shop Announced on Blu-ray

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has announced the Zhang Yimou movie A Woman, a Gun and a Noodle Shop (San qiang pai an jing qi) for Blu-ray release on February 1, 2011. In this Chinese remake of the Coen brothers' Blood Simple, the owner of a noodle restaurant hatches a plan to murder both his adulterous wife and her lover. It premiered at the Berlin Film Festival.

Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment has announced that it will release Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind (Kaze no tani no Naushika; Hayao Miyazaki, 1984) on Blu-ray on March 8, 2011, on a BD/DVD combo pack. This would be the first Blu-ray release of a catalog title from the famous Studio Ghibli in the US (the 2008 production Ponyo was released earlier this year).

Vizio Announces Two 3D Blu-ray Players

Vizio has officially announced two new Blu-ray players, models VBR333 and VBR334. Both support the Blu-ray 3D specification. Regarding connectivity, both have integrated WiFi, and support Internet Apps (including Vudu, Pandora and Netflix). The main difference between the two models is that the VBR334 includes an HDMI cable. Price has been set at $179.99 for the VBR333 and $189.99 for the VBR334. They will be available in November.

JP Jeunet Disowns Alien Resurrection Blu-ray Transfer

French filmmaker Jean-Pierre Jeunet, director of Alien Resurrection, has revealed on his personal blog that, unlike Ridley Scott for Alien and James Cameron for Aliens, he wasn't invited to supervise the remastering of his movie, included in the Alien Anthology Blu-ray. Jeunet has said that the BD of the fourth Alien installment has the picture quality of "a very mediocre DVD."
