Overlord III: Season 3 Blu-ray Movie Review

Reviewed by Neil Lumbard September 21, 2026

The world of Overlord is getting more and more exciting with every next season as the story about Ainz and Great Tomb of Nazarick becomes increasingly intricate and multi-layered. What started as a relatively contained exercise in power fantasies and dark fantasy horror expands exponentially in season 3, depicting both the majesty and pettiness of the endless power fantasy at the center of the show.

For the fans of the series, this particular Blu-ray SteelBook is a wonderful addition to their collection, but what matters more is the actual content of the product. Does it have enough substance to justify another purchase by the enthusiasts who already own the first two seasons? A resounding “yes”, mostly due to the show’s unique mix of genres and the way it balances light and dark tones consistently throughout the episodes. As far as the third season itself is concerned, it is better seen as an evolution of the first two seasons rather than a stand-alone entity.

It does not chase typical anime tropes and instead tries to evolve the story and the power level of Ainz to the point where his very existence can alter the very fabric of the world. This approach is both thrilling and dark, as the viewer has to constantly re-contextualize the events and understand the motivations of the characters who find themselves in the position to make such unimaginable decisions.

For this reason, Overlord season 3 is great in almost every conceivable sense. It expands on the themes of the original season and serves as a proper successor to it, continuing to delight the viewers with the absurdity of the world created by the developers and the variety of the series.

One of the things that makes Overlord so fascinating is its tendency to place an almost unstoppable entity at the center of the narrative. Ainz is not a hero who fights against progressively stronger foes. He is a self-insert boss that strives to comprehend the world around him, protect his belongings and satisfy the expectations of others to the best of his ability. Season 3 builds on this premise, juxtaposing Ainz's unrelenting desire to expand his influence to the edges of the world against the certainty of his minions regarding his power. The very fact that the two have different perceptions creates much of the show's comedy. However, the series grows increasingly serious as the actions of Nazarick's leaders begin to impact the world at large. The series retains its sense of dark fantasy, but the perspective shifts to observe the reactions of common people, kingdoms, and even armies to the attentions of the entity from above. Overlord's third season is a welcome addition to the series that showcases its unique approach to the development of the plot and the world within. The audience is often treated to a perspective facing the seemingly impossible power of Ainz Ooal Gown, which can be laughable from one character's point of view and downright terrifying from another. Some events could have used further expansion, and the show's reliance on the passage of time between major location changes may be a turnoff for some. However, an overarching sense of the world building and Nazarick's rise to prominence are felt throughout the season.

Overlord III: Season 3 Blu-ray Movie, Video Quality  4.0 of 5

Released on Blu-ray by Crunchyroll, the North American Crunchyroll SteelBook contains the entire 13 episodes of the series on two Blu-ray discs, with a 1.78:1 ratio, and 1080p high-definition presentation.

The high-definition presentation is well-suited to the show's style, which juxtaposes classic anime character designs with expansive fantasy settings, intricate costumes, and magical effects. The series makes frequent use of contrasting light and shadow in its depiction of the grand interior spaces of Nazarick, the landscapes surrounding the castle, and the everyday world of ordinary people living in the larger world.

Dark fantasy anime tends to make greater use of subtle shading and color differentiation to define the characters' clothing, armor, and accessories, especially in shadow-heavy environments or against the backdrop of magical effects. This is further enhanced by Ainz and his guardians' use of dark attire and accessories, which stand out more prominently against the contrasting elements in their surroundings.

The 1080p AVC encoding is a standard and appropriate choice for a 2018 television anime, one that makes full use of native high-definition presentation without the need for an Ultra HD remaster or a 4K upscale. It is important to note that this is a 1080p Blu-ray release, rather than a 4K Ultra HD one.

Overlord III: Season 3 Blu-ray Movie, Audio Quality  4.0 of 5

The release features English and Japanese Dolby TrueHD 2.0 tracks, with English subtitles provided. The lossless audio presentation sounds fantastic. Both options are terrific.

The show's mix of dialogue, orchestral fantasy, supernatural effects, action, and sound effects blends Ainz's authoritative voice, the contrasting personalities of the guardians, and the juxtaposition of tense talks and dramatic confrontations into a single mix. This particular release's stated tracks in TrueHD 2.0 are stereo presentations.

For the average viewer who watches the show on a television or a pair of stereo speakers, being able to hear the words in either language is a simple matter of switching the audio settings. Viewers who have surround-sound receivers should keep in mind what the channel count specification of a particular Dolby TrueHD track means in terms of its ability to utilize the hardware's capabilities.

The presence of both English and Japanese options in the release makes it a good candidate for discussion for users who prefer one version of the dialogue over the other. English subtitles are provided for the Japanese version, allowing the viewer to enjoy the original cast performances while still being able to understand the conversation.

As is typical for any anime production, the show's voice acting plays a crucial role. Ainz's careful delivery contrasts the more expressive performances of the guardians, contributing to the series' blend of imposing power and lighthearted banter between the characters.

Overlord III: Season 3 Blu-ray Movie, Special Features and Extras  3.5 of 5

Disc 1:

Chapter 8 Audio Commentary

Disc 2:

Episode 11 Video Commentary (HD, 23:49)

Chapter 13 Audio Commentary

Play Play Pleiades 3 (HD, 19:57)

Special Preview Collection (HD, 6:56)

Chapter 1 Preview (HD, 00:32)

Commercials (HD, 1:06)

Textless Opening Song "VORACITY" (HD, 1:32)

Textless Closing Song "Silent Solitude" (HD, 1:32)

The inclusion of audio/video episode commentaries is appreciated, both for viewers who want to see production-related discussion, and because it gives a chance to re-watch certain episodes alongside the staff with additional information. Both the content and scale of the commentaries should be taken into consideration outside the presentation of the show itself.

The Play Play Pleiades 3 mini anime is a humorous companion piece to the series, both because it serves as a palate cleanser and because it gives the chance to re-watch the characters in a different environment – for fans of the personalities involved, this is an added bonus.

The preview collections, commercials, and chapter previews are more of a preservation of the promotional material for the series, as there is not much reason to view these otherwise outside of research purposes. It does not compare to a full making-of documentary or interview collection, but it does preserve the promotional material accompanying the series' release.

The textless openings and endings are another appreciated bonus, as openings and endings are an important part of the media, and having a version without the on-screen text allows to enjoy the visuals without dealing with the usual credits.

The extras are light on production-related media, commentary, and other bonuses, instead focusing on promotional material and small media featuring the characters and staff. Therefore, the collector's value of the release depends on the individual and their interest in production-related content.

The Steelbook –

The SteelBook format is a natural fit for a series such as Overlord, whose aesthetic is closely tied to its characters, dark fantasy atmosphere, and world building. A metal cover offers a more desirable collectible experience than a standard plastic Blu-ray case, while the compact size makes for convenient storage side by side with other releases.

A SteelBook's appeal extends to more than its capacity to store discs. For collectors, the presentation of the artwork on the front, spine, and inside printing, as well as the ability to display it alongside larger media releases, can factor into the purchase decision. These physical differences are a part of the experience that differentiates a home-video purchase from a digital one.

The Overlord franchise is especially well suited for a collectible packaging due to the characters' distinctive visual silhouettes and the variety of the setting which provide an ample canvas for the iconic fantasy painting. The steelbook purchase allows a collector to have a uniform presentation for their first, second, and third seasons of the series.

Overlord III: Season 3 Blu-ray Movie, Overall Score and Recommendation  3.5 of 5

Overlord Season 3 continues to build on the series' unique blend of themes, expanding both the scale of Ainz Ooal Gown's ambitions and more. Its mix of darkly comedic tones, interpersonal politics, character drama, and grand-scale supernatural conflict, remains as engaging as ever.

The North American Blu-ray SteelBook includes all 13 episodes across two discs, with a 1080p AVC encode, Dolby TrueHD 2.0 English and Japanese tracks, English subtitles, and a decent amount of supplementary content. Recommended.
