That Time I Got Reincarnated As A Slime has always been one of those rare modern isekai series that promised to grow into something much bigger than your typical reincarnated salaryman slice-of-life. The premise itself evolved as the series progressed, shifting from a comparatively light exploration of Rimuru’s amicable slime-based powers to a multi-layered fantasy piece concerning monsters, the politics of kingdoms, rival Demon Lords, and war. That Time I Got Reincarnated As A Slime: Season 2 sees the show grow darker and more serious while retaining much of the humor and accessibility that made Rimuru so endearing as a protagonist.

Crunchyroll’s Complete Season 2 Blu-ray SteelBook offers an attractive physical-media upgrade for the series that was previously split across two separate releases. The four-disc Blu-ray set contains all 24 episodes of the second season, which are presented in 1080p quality. The SteelBook itself is something of a treat for the series’ fans, and the overall value is difficult to deny. The question for longtime viewers who already own the Part 1 and Part 2 releases is whether this new edition is worth the additional purchase. Meanwhile, newcomers to the series should have no trouble with the decision to acquire this steelbook set.

Season 2 sees Rimuru truly come into his powers as the leader of the Jura Tempest Federation. While the comparatively goofy tone of Season 1 has been replaced with something darker and more political, the series retains its sense of fun and wonder. It is not all easygoing monster-peace treaties and saving the world, however; the second season of That Time I Got Reincarnated As A Slime sees Rimuru Tempest shift from an amiable slime being to a true ruler of his own land and people. Political and military conflicts with the Beast Kingdom of Eurazania, the Demon Lord Carrion, and the warring lesser Demon Lords test Rimuru’s leadership and determination to create a prosperous world for all beings, monster and otherwise.

This second season of That Time I Got Reincarnated As A Slime presents a character who has to grow beyond his goofy, almost naïve nature. Rimuru is more responsible and serious than ever, but the good-natured child that lies beneath that exterior has not disappeared; it has only been overshadowed by his sense of duty to his people. The series itself is much more mature and layered than in its early episodes, and while the light-hearted elements are still present, Rimuru’s role as the protagonist is no longer as simple as it used to be. This is, overall, one of the best seasons of the television series, due in no small part to the complexity of Its main character and the scope of the narrative it embraces.

That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime: Season Two Blu-ray Movie, Video Quality 

Released on Blu-ray by Crunchyroll, That Time I Got Reincarnated As A Slime: Season 2 is presented in 1080p MPEG-4 AVC encoded high-definition in the original television aspect ratio of 1.78:1 widescreen. The 1080p presentation maintains the expressive colors that have been one of the strongest features of the animated series. The series' digital painting-style animation holds up well on Blu-ray, with an especially wide range of colors being reproduced across the episodes of the second season. Character designs are well defined, with good line clarity, and Rimuru's transformations, the variety of monsters that appear in the different lands, the scenery, and the show's impressively large-scale magical displays all look great in this resolution.

The show's color blend is diverse, ranging from the vibrant greens and blues typical of the Jura Tempest Federation to the reds and oranges of the desert regions, the blue-black tones of night, and the unnatural colors of magic. Overall, the colors are well saturated without being oversaturated, and the black levels are deep enough to create the necessary contrast in the darker parts of the episodes. It should also be noted that the animation quality is variable but generally consistent with the rest of the series. That Time I Got Reincarnated As A Slime is not a show with consistently high animation quality, but individual scenes, battles, effects, and magic displays all look great in the 1080p presentation.

As stated, the 1.78:1 ratio is retained, and the format used for encoding is MPEG-4 AVC. It goes without saying that a Blu-ray representation of the series is best enjoyed on a high-quality screen, as the video's quality is noticeably better than what one would get from any streaming service or lower-resolution display. Details are preserved well, and the colors are vivid and expressive. This is yet another example of how an anime series looks best when one owns the physical media version of it. The 1080p resolution, combined with the detailed character and background animation, is a true feast for the eyes.

The release includes a selection of lossless audio options: English Dolby TrueHD 5.1 and Japanese Dolby TrueHD 2.0 (with English subtitles).

The English 5.1 Dolby TrueHD mix is the one to choose, if only because the 2-channel Japanese original appears somewhat thin by comparison. English subtitles are also available, of course. The 5.1 mix is fairly expansive, providing excellent immersion and allowing the viewer to appreciate the scale of individual scenes. Explosions, spells, and individual weapons all have their moment to shine, and large-scale battles sound fantastic.

Music and sound effects are not overpowering, but they hold up well and support the narrative of the episode, its setting, and the characters' emotions. The Japanese original, for its part, is very straightforward and easy to understand. Viewers with a surround setup will likely prefer the 5.1 English mix due to its expansiveness.

It is also worth noting that both the 5.1 and the 2-channel mixes have been mastered in a superior lossless format, which is a big step up over lossy on streaming. Dialogue is easy to understand in both mixes, and music helps to elevate the viewing experience. The overall feel of the score, as well as the balance between the dialogue, music, and sound effects, is perfectly fine for an anime production of this kind and does not detract from the viewing experience in any way.

That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime: Season Two Blu-ray Movie, Special Features and Extras 

Extras are minimal but overall welcome. This set includes textless episodes, the episode 31 preview, "Tales: Veldora's Journal 2," promotional videos, commercials, and textless openings and endings. The Veldora's Journal entries are an excellent addition to the second season, which continues to lean into the show's more comedic aspects. Veldora's personality is as outrageous as ever, and his antics are entertaining.

The textless openings and ending songs are also nice, if not particularly surprising additions. They allow the viewer to enjoy the animation and music without any text on the screen. It must be said that there are few worthwhile extras on offer, and those seeking deeper insight into the production and the series' development may be disappointed. With that being said, the ones that are on offer are overall pleasant enough, and the production quality across all additional materials is adequate for a product of this kind.

The SteelBook:

The SteelBook is certainly the highlight of this release, and it deserves special commentary. This four-disc set is presented in a SteelBook, which is a welcome change from the standard Amaray cases that housed all previous releases of That Time I Got Reincarnated As A Slime. This version of the second season is even more attractive, and it offers collectors the chance to build a unified, high-quality library of the series. It must also be said that the choice of the SteelBook format was a particularly wise one, given the overall colorful visual presentation.

The most important feature of this release, however, is the fact that all episodes are consolidated into a single, four-disc Blu-ray set. This is, in fact, one of the key differences between the North American Season 2 release and most other regional options. The previous two versions of the Season 2 were released as Part 1 and Part 2, with each containing 12 episodes and a combination of Blu-ray and DVD discs. The new SteelBook version, by contrast, contains all 24 episodes of the season on four Blu-ray discs. Thus, it serves as a valuable alternative to the earlier releases that had separate, shorter episode counts on separate discs.

It should also be noted that this is largely a consolidation release as opposed to a major remaster or restoration. The quality of the episodes is mostly consistent with what Crunchyroll's Season 2 Part 1 and Part 2 have to offer. The physical media version of the series is largely a convenience and a collector's item, as owning it with attractive cases and lossless audio is always going to be a preferable option for serious anime enthusiasts.

The physical-media advantage of this release is difficult to overestimate. That Time I Got Reincarnated As A Slime is one of the most popular anime series of recent years, which means that many of its episodes are available in a variety of digital formats. However, Crunchyroll's SteelBook offers something unique: a collectible version of the series that will never disappear and never leave anyone's personal library. Digital downloads and streaming services have their own advantages, but they are also notoriously fickle with regard to licensing agreements and regional availability. Anime titles tend to shift between different platforms frequently, sometimes disappearing from all together for an extended period.

This is why a physical-media version of the series is significantly more valuable for collectors and longtime enthusiasts rather than casual viewers. The SteelBook version of That Time I Got Reincarnated As A Slime: Season 2, in particular, is a great collector's piece because of its presentation, which is significantly more attractive than the standard Amaray cases. The very fact of the SteelBook release is notable as well, as most other anime titles at Crunchyroll do not utilize this packaging as often.

That Time I Got Reincarnated As A Slime Season 2 is where the story truly begins to evolve and expand upon its origins. That Time I Got Reincarnated As A Slime: Season 2 Blu-ray continues to feature the same mix of humor and fantasy adventure that defined Rimuru's journey, but the world he inhabits becomes significantly darker and more complex than ever before. Rimuru himself matures as a character and takes on more responsibilities as he tries to lead his people and the monsters of his kingdom to prosper and survive against outside forces.

Crunchyroll's physical-media release captures all of this in good quality and utilizes the SteelBook packaging that makes the product all the more attractive to serious anime fans. The four-disc set contains all 24 episodes of the second season, presented in 1080p quality with an English 5.1 Dolby TrueHD mix that is both immersive and expressive. The Japanese original, for its part, holds up well with the lossless 2-channel option. Recommended.
