The world of the Overlord is getting more and more interesting in the second season, as it moves away from the simplicity of a lone strongman and starts focusing on the intrigue and the rivalries between various power centers. Having conquered the Great Tomb of Nazarick, Ainz Ooal Gown enjoys his well-deserved success as the ruler of his realm.
But what else is there to do when you are one of the strongest beings in the realm? The second season of Overlord focuses on the world outside the Great Tomb, presenting new locations, societies, and creatures for the viewers to marvel at.
Overlord II is presented in a Blu-ray SteelBook format, which is sure to delight any fan of the series, but what is more important, the quality of the product is truly remarkable. This review will focus on the merits of the season as an anime production.

There is something deeply endearing about the way the first season of Overlord tells the story of an ordinary isekai adventurer who finds himself in a strange new world, having to use his wits and strength to survive. But the charm is in its uniqueness – unlike many other isekai stories, Overlord does not focus on the hardships of the protagonists in their everyday life. Rather, it showcases the life and relationships of an exceptionally strong individual who finds himself in a position to rule.
The second season continues the tradition of the first one, expanding upon the themes introduced there. If the first season was about Nazarick and the trials that Ainz has to face in his new body, the second one explores other localities and societies. The Lizardmen storyline is the most prominent one, as it introduces a tribe whose fate is now tied to Ainz due to his reckless decision to conquer their halls. This allows the story to branch out both thematically and geographically, giving viewers a chance to get to know new characters and get involved in new adventures.
Compared to the first season, however, the second one has a calmer pace and a less personal focus. While the first season introduced the players to Nazarick and the kinds of ordeals that Ainz has to survive, the second one sets the stage for greater adventures to come.
As the story progresses, it gets more and more invested in the politics and the interpersonal drama between various factions. The third act of the season acts as a bridge between the first and the second half of the larger story, focusing on Ainz’s adventures as an adventurer. Ainz’s personal strength and the power of Nazarick make him a truly fearsome opponent, but the encounters that he has in the New World and the clashes with the Re-Estize Kingdom and the other guardians of Nazarick are becoming more and more interpersonal.
The series provides the viewer with an intriguing look at the ways the world perceives Ainz – and few realize the true extent of his power. The view from Ainz’s perspective is not the only unique one in the series. This strength of characterization, combined with the scale of the world, allows the series to present an interesting look at its universe.
Overlord is a truly remarkable series in this regard, as it manages to create engaging character arcs that span across many seasons while not shying away from the darker elements of its premise.
The second season sees Ainz leaving the safety of Nazarick in order to explore the world outside. It is clear to see the effort that went into developing the world, but the series’ focus on the Lizardmen and their lives gives it a peculiar charm. The characters of the Lizardmen are well-written and fleshed-out, as the narrative explores their relationships, lives, fears, and hopes. Compared to the seemingly limitless resources of Nazarick, the Lizardmen’s efforts to survive against the seemingly unsurpassable enemy are truly inspiring.
Outside of Ainz’s adventures, the series continues to explore his relationships with his subordinates. The dynamic between the two is truly unique, as the guardians believe in their master with an almost religious fervor. But the series’ greatest strength is in its focus on the struggle for perception, as multiple storylines depict the uneasy dynamic between Ainz and his subordinates, who often misinterpret his ambiguous orders. This often leads to some of the darkest existential crises for the guards, who realize the true scale of the forces that they serve.
Yet the miscommunication between Ainz and his underlings provides many opportunities for lighthearted moments, in which Nazarick’s inhabitants attempt to understand each other.
The comedic potential of the dynamic is truly remarkable, but the series manages to avoid taking things too seriously, maintaining its grim tone throughout most episodes.
The second season of the series is, in many ways, an expansion on the first one, both thematically and in terms of the show’s production quality.

Released on Blu-ray by Crunchyroll, Overlord II is presented in 1080p MPEG-4 AVC encoded high-definition in the original aspect ratio of 1.78:1 widescreen. The North American SteelBook release of Overlord II encompasses all 13 episodes on two Blu-ray discs.
The overall visual presentation is enhanced by the high-definition presentation, particularly considering episodes that prominently feature dimly lit interiors, large-scale fantasy settings and outdoor night scenes. Overlord makes frequent use of a dark color palette, with a number of scenes relying on the use of shadow and earthy tones to create a particular mood. A competent high-definition presentation is needed in order to distinguish elements in darker areas of the screen.
Character designs remain consistently identifiable, while a variety of settings allow for a diverse use of the color spectrum from the natural wilderness and domestic settings to the impressive architecture of Nazarick.
As is common for most television anime, the animation and compositing is the dominant element that comprises the production values, as opposed to the photorealistic qualities of theatrical motion pictures. The Blu-ray format offers a worthy presentation for the series, allowing the production values to be appreciated at native high-definition resolutions.
The presentation should be taken within context of the source material, which is a 1080p HD-native series that does not feature the sort of upsampling and HDR highlights that define a 4K Ultra HD release. There is little expectation for the sort of enhanced detail and contrast that a modern 4K release would provide, with the 1080p HD presentation being a sufficient specification for most viewers. For those who wish to enjoy the series in a physical high-definition format, the two-disc release provides the entire season in a single, convenient package.

The release features an English Dolby TrueHD 5.1 soundtrack and a Japanese Dolby TrueHD 2.0 soundtrack. The English subtitles are available as well.
The English 5.1 mix is especially impressive for the people who enjoy the show's action scenes with a broader soundstage. The series utilizes its dramatic orchestral music, special effects, and character voices to score the fights and create the immersive experience of the chosen fantasy realm.
The difference between the English and Japanese tracks is crucial for certain listeners, but it is not necessarily linked to the superiority of one language's soundtrack over the other. The English language option is a five-channel lossless mix, while the Japanese version uses a two-channel Dolby TrueHD. Both tracks are merely different in their specifications because they were made for different options.
It is worth noting that the show's dramatic effect is found in the mixture of special effects and the orchestrated music that accompany the magic-powered adventures and battles. Loud impacts, sound effects, and the voices of the characters shouting in surprise or anger are the primary tools for reinforcing the narrative's emotional impact, especially when the wizard prepares a powerful spell. Therefore, the lossless format of the audio track is the preferred choice for the majority of viewers.
The show's announcement and the presence of multiple characters with distinct voices suggest that the series focuses on the power of dialogue. The subtleties and undertones of the guards' conversations are the driving force of the plot in several episodes of the first season, including the stories about the guards' lives. The audio quality of the series is sufficient to appreciate the details of conversation and the specific atmosphere each character brings into the dialogue.

One of the best things about the Overlord II SteelBook is that it contains extra content apart from the episodes. The listed additional features include episode commentaries, Anime Expo 2018, the Play Play Pleiades 2 mini anime, previews, promotional videos, and textless opening and ending songs. Each of these features will offer something unique to fans, and the most significant bonus is commentary about the episodes.
The commentary tracks are perfect for those who want to dive deeper into the production process. For each episode of the series, there are insights and details about the decisions made by the creators. The usefulness of such a feature depends solely on the people who watch the commentaries and what they want to know about the production. However, the presence of this additional feature always makes sense, as it often includes crucial information and notable details important to the series' production.
Another feature that goes into the worth of this SteelBook is Anime Expo 2018. It includes a message from Minoru Ashina and an interview with Kugane Maruyama and Naoyuki Itou.
This part of the release is perfect for those interested in the process of promoting the series and seeing how the company participates in such events. With multiple subfeatures, including interviews and messages from the creators, it is a great opportunity for true fans of the series to get more information.
The Play Play Pleiades 2 mini anime is also worth mentioning, as it provides a different perspective on the franchise and allows one to experience more of the universe's world and its inhabitants. Being a side series, it is much more lighthearted and provides an additional context to the main series. Together with previews, promotional videos, and textless openings and endings, they comprise the additional content of this release.
Commentary tracks, Anime Expo 2018, and the Play Play Pleiades 2 mini anime are valuable additions to the media product, and the sheer presence of these features adds to the product's worth. Though the extra content may not be the reason for the purchase for some people, it is a considerable bonus for those who wanted to support the release.
The Steelbook:
The SteelBook version of Overlord II was released in North America by Crunchyroll on October 21, 2025. The second season of the series is included on two Blu-ray discs that comprise 325 minutes of video.
It is entirely reasonable for the Overlord series to be released in the SteelBook format. The media has a considerable following among enthusiasts, and it has a well-deserved reputation. Metal cases differ considerably from the standard plastic ones, so having an alternative for collectors' shelves can be a welcome change. Moreover, the release of the second season in such packaging could be another step in creating a complete home video box for the entire series.
The steelbook looks fantastic. The release has great artwork. The two-disc set makes a nice shelf-friendly option.

Overlord II builds upon the franchise's world and themes, focusing on the implications of Ainz Ooal Gown's rise to power. The Lizardmen subplot gives the franchise a new perspective, while the developments in Nazarick, the human kingdoms, and Ainz's adventures as an adventurer provide a sense of scale and ambition.
The show's ability to switch between dark fantasy, politics, comedy, and supernatural genres is what makes it so compelling. Its very existence challenges the idea of a typical good vs evil conflict, and the series' richness and complexity demand more attention than just a heroic underdog saga.
As a home video, the North American SteelBook offering contains the whole 13-episode season spread over two Blu-rays, high 1080p resolution, lossless audio, English subtitles, and a decent set of extra material. The episodes commentaries and Anime Expo interviews are especially valuable, as they provide a different look at the franchise's ongoing story. The accessibility and variety of the bonus features are perfect for the consumer looking to get more into the world of Overlord.
