Nurses for Sale Blu-ray Movie Review

Reviewed by Jeffrey Kauffman June 20, 2020

Note: This film is available as part of Al Adamson: The Masterpiece Collection.

Disc Nine of The Masterpiece Collection aggregates three of Adamson's sexploitation efforts, including one with a bonafide (hard core) porn star, and another with (perhaps even more incredibly) a two time BAFTA nominee (albeit courtesy of the frequent Adamson and Sherman technique of co-opting a previously released film).

The BAFTA nominee and co-opting mentioned above pertain to this completely peculiar effort, which combines a German film entitled Käpt'n Rauhbein aus St. Pauli with newly shot material by Adamson that seems to at least hint, at least in one scene with a curvaceous nurse type getting "revealed" in an outdoor shower, at M*A*S*H. The film actually starts with some brief exposition about an epidemic (yes, Adamson was a prophet), and then with one of several sexually charged scenes staged by Adamson, in this case a menage a trois between a guy and two amorous nurses. Suffice it to say that by the time double BAFTA nominee Curt Jurgens shows up as a kind of The African Queen-like grizzled boat captain in footage interpolated from the earlier German outing, things have probably moved beyond the merely confusing into the positively surreal.

Nurses for Sale Blu-ray Movie, Video Quality  1.5 of 5

Nurses for Sale is presented on Blu-ray courtesy of Severin Films with an AVC encoded 1080p transfer in 1.67:1. This is one of the more badly faded and damaged presentations in this set, and that's evident from the first moment, which seems to cut in mid sentence. There's a frequent greenish tint running through the presentation that can, for example, make water look teal. There are pretty frequent scratches, many often running the entire length of the frame. Perhaps surprisingly given all of these hurdles, clarity can be quite good, all things considered, and individual moments have decent fine detail.

Nurses for Sale Blu-ray Movie, Audio Quality  3.0 of 5

Nurses for Sale features a DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0 Mono track that offers hilariously bad dubbing, but actually surprisingly full bodied fidelity. There are no huge quality differences here, probably because virtually the entire film looks like it may have been post looped. English subtitles are available via the button on your remote.

Nurses for Sale Blu-ray Movie, Overall Score and Recommendation  2.0 of 5

Adamson and Samuel Sherman never seemed to miss a trick in finding exploitable (in more ways than ones) properties and incorporating them into their work. Why they thought this German film would make a good fit with nurses with very good bedside manners is kind of mind boggling, actually. Video here is badly damaged and faded, but the audio, while probably unintentionally hilarious, sounds fine.
