Sunset Cove Blu-ray Movie Review

Reviewed by Jeffrey Kauffman June 20, 2020

Note: This film is available as part of Al Adamson: The Masterpiece Collection.

Disc Thirteen of The Masterpiece Collection offers what is arguably a strange grab bag of a triple feature, with one fairly harmless sex comedy, one slightly more salacious but still harmless sex comedy musical, and more of a straight out supernatural horror outing.

Sunset Cove sees Al Adamson revisiting the "beach hijinks" of films like Beach Blanket Bingo, albeit with considerably more overt sexual content and considerably less singing and dancing (if you want even more overt sexual content with singing and dancing, head on over to Cinderella 2000, also included on this disc). Sunset Cove has a basically threadbare plot involving teens attempting to save their favorite beach hangout, which is being threatened by condo developers. It's all patently ridiculous and simply a foundation on which Adamson can build his patented series of racy interactions. John Carradine is fun as a judge who helps the kids.

Sunset Cove Blu-ray Movie, Video Quality  3.5 of 5

Sunset Cove is presented on Blu-ray courtesy of Severin Films with an AVC encoded 1080p transfer in 1.85:1. This is definitely one of the better looking transfers in the set, though it, too, does exhibit the same kinds of minor damage in the forms of flecks and speckling seen in some other presentations. The palette offers some incredibly appealing blues, something that's evident from the get go with the bright printing of the credits, but which extends into a lot of the beach material. Detail levels are generally very good as well. Some of the outdoor material can look just a bit yellowish at times. My score is 3.75.

Sunset Cove Blu-ray Movie, Audio Quality  3.5 of 5

Sunset Cove features a DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0 Mono track that capably supports the film's dialogue and music. Some scenes, like a car chase that gets onto the beach, can offer effects and score simultaneously, and things tend to sound surprisingly clear and well balanced throughout. Dialogue is presented without any issues whatsoever. English subtitles are available via the button on your remote.

Sunset Cove Blu-ray Movie, Special Features and Extras  1.5 of 5

  • Sunset Toolbox (1080p; 11:31) is a nice interview with producer Tony DiDio.

  • Sunset Cove Trailer (1080p; 2:02)

  • TV Spot (1080p; 00:32)

Sunset Cove Blu-ray Movie, Overall Score and Recommendation  2.5 of 5

Sunset Cove is, for Adamson at least, a relatively harmless and even kind of sweet affair. That doesn't mean there's an absence of naked women, of course, just in case anyone is concerned. Technical merits are among the strongest in this set, and the interview with Tony DiDio is very enjoyable.
