There’s no way to accurately describe “Baby Bump,” which takes an experimental art look at the pains of puberty from the perspective of a particularly confused boy. It’s a scattergun effort from writer/director Kuba Czekaj, who gives the endeavor his all on a visual level, playing with editing, split-screen, animation, and abstraction to make his comedy(?) aggressively playful. Whatever this is, it handles itself with remarkable attention to detail, giving underground cinema cowboys a true bucking bronco viewing experience.

The AVC encoded image (2.39:1 aspect ratio) presentation delivers extraordinary clarity for "Baby Bump." Granted, the feature doesn't offer the most pleasant images, but it's a bright, clean viewing experience with exceptional detail, digging into the textures of macabre discoveries and locations, while facial particulars are sharp. Colors are jubilant, with big pinks and blues, and skintones are spot-on. Delineation is stable. Source is immaculate.

The 2.0 DTS-HD MA sound mix offers considerable chaos to sort through, but definition is agreeable, leading with active dialogue exchanges and running commentary from Jeroba Mouse. Music is heavier and louder, but never distortive, handling moods with authority and precise instrumentation. Atmospherics are active, and sound effects are sharp.

"Baby Bump" is perhaps reserved only for the curious, as a casual viewing just won't work with film craftsmanship this intentionally cranked up. It carries along with a sense of humor, and cinematographic efforts are superb, keeping the feature bright and candied, even when it visits more than few dark psychological spaces. But this is specific moviemaking for a specific audience, and for those willing to submit to Czekaj's widescreen funhouse, "Baby Bump" is ready with a vivid sense of personal awakening.
