Wicked 4K Limited Edition SteelBook Blu-ray Movie Review

'Wicked', the smash Broadway hit that became the 33rd highest-grossing live-action film arrives in another SteelBook with this 'Wicked 4K Limited Edition SteelBook' courtesy of Universal. Its release is timed to coincide with the second and final installment of the musical tale arriving in theaters. This SteelBook release appears to be virtually identical to the Walmart Exclusive SteelBook that arrived on shelves in February of 2025. As with the Broadway show and the book of the same name on which it is based, written by Gregory Maguire, film takes viewers back in time before Frank L. Baum's 'Wizard of OZ' to share the origin story of Elphaba, known colloquially as "The Wicked Witch of the West" beginning with her childhood and pays particular attention to her time learning the ways of magic at Shiz University. Along the way she learns the lessons of discrimination, friendship, mentorship, and betrayal in the wondrous land of Oz. Film stars Cynthia Erivo (Elphaba), Ariana Grande (Glinda), Michelle Yeoh (Madame Morrible), and Jeff Goldblum (The Wonderful Wizard of Oz) in a dazzling production. The 4K UHD's 2160p transfer is enhanced by Dolby Vision and is accompanied by a boisterous Dolby Atmos audio track. A meaningful assortment of on-disc supplemental material complements the film. The two discs found within (a 4K UHD disc and a Blu-ray disc each containing the feature film and special features) are identical to those which comprise the standard UHD release. Wicked 4K Limited Edition SteelBook Blu-ray Movie, Special Features and Extras 

As with the previous Walmart Exclusive SteelBook, the new Wicked 4K Limited Edtition SteelBook sees a striking image of Elphaba holding hands with Glinda adorning the textless front cover. The pair stand centered before a circular window through which the Emerald City and a host of flying monkeys soaring through darkened skies can be seen behind Elphaba, and warm sunlight bathes the distant Shiz University seen behind Glinda. Darker greens dominate the left side where Elphaba stands, while the right side is much brighter and features Glinda's bubblegum-colored voluminous dress and warm golden tones. The back cover features a stylized "W" that is positioned in the center of a green field, which darkens in proximity to the corners and edges. The "W" is black and bordered with gold. Universal's logo appears in yellow at the bottom in the center, and the product number is found in the lower right corner. The spine sports the film's title in green in the middle of a field of black, with the Universal logo again appearing at the bottom. The SteelBook features a glossy finish on which fingerprints associated with careful handling are not readily visible. There are no embossed or debossed elements.

When opening SteelBook, the Digital Code resides under the two tabs on the left side. On the right side, the 4K UHD disc and the Blu-ray disc are stagger-stacked, each on its own hub, with the 4K UHD disc on top. Removing the discs reveals a panoramic image of Oz's landscape. The Emerald City lies in the distance on the left side, framed by cherry blossoms in the foreground. As the the eye scans to the right, the image becomes more eerie. Skies darken, and while the grass is still green, the branches of the trees are dead and barren.

Wicked 4K Limited Edition SteelBook Blu-ray Movie, Overall Score and Recommendation 

The Wicked 4K Limited Edition SteelBook is striking, concisely conveying the film's identity and tone without feeling the need to clutter the gorgeous image with the film's title. The glossy finish helps the green, pink, and gold elements that dominate the cover to spring forth with added vibrancy. As to the release itself, it is virtually without fault and will leave viewers anxiously awaiting the final portion of Elphaba and Glinda's story. For the film's fans and casual and dedicated SteelBook collectors alike who missed the previous Walmart exclusive, the new Wicked 4K Limited Edition SteelBook comes very highly recommended.
