Top Gun 4K Blu-ray Movie Review
Reviewed by Martin Liebman December 7, 2020
Paramount has released a SteelBook packaging variant for its 4K UHD release of the 1986 Tom Cruise classic 'Top Gun.' The disc and digital
content is identical to that found in the wide release which debuted in May 2020; the SteelBook was then delayed,
likely due to the COVID-19 pandemic. See the 'Special Features and Extras' section of the review below for
more on the SteelBook's look and feel.

Top Gun 4K Blu-ray Movie, Special Features and Extras

Paramount's Top Gun SteelBook release is slick and smooth but its color scheme does not readily show handling fingerprints. The front panel is
comprised of
a collage of hand-drawn images, mostly characters but some other support elements, too. Maverick is featured most prominently along with Charlie,
Goose, and Iceman. Jets both grounded and in the sky are included, as is a picture of Maverick wearing his flight helmet in the cockpit. The film's title
appears centered but at about the bottom third portion. Below are a couple of additional images: Maverick and Goose walking away from their jet on
the deck and Maverick riding his motorcycle. That portion of the image forms a Tomcat's rear section; its wings and nose can be made out along the
rest of the SteelBook. The image is mostly gray and blue with some red mixed into the film's title and some white at the bottom. The rear panel holds
many similar design cues but only features a couple of F-14s zooming through the clouds. A Paramount logo and legalese appear bottom left and a
model number bottom right. The spine carries over a rolling image of the sky and clouds from the front and rear panels. The film's title in the familiar
style is center. A Paramount logo appears at the top and UHD and Blu-ray logos at the bottom.
Inside, the digital copy code is tucked underneath the left-hand-side tabs. The two discs, one UHD and one Blu-ray, are situated on the right in
staggered-stacked formation. The inner print is a two-panel spread that features a similar design cue to the exterior, here depicting an F-14 on the deck
and a couple flying up top in the sky, right. Two flight deck crewmen can be seen on the deck as well.

Top Gun 4K Blu-ray Movie, Overall Score and Recommendation

Better late than never. Paramount has done right by Top Gun on UHD and the film now has a handsome SteelBook to go with it. Very highly
recommended.
