The Twilight Saga: Eclipse 4K Blu-ray Movie Review

Reviewed by Jeffrey Kauffman November 15, 2023

Note: This version of this film is available as part of The Twilight Saga: 5-Movie Collection 4K.

Just a few weeks after Lionsgate offered a so-called "wide release" of The Twilight Saga: The Complete Collection on 1080 discs, the studio is once again partnering with Best Buy for a series of exclusive SteelBook releases presenting the Twilight films in 4K (with 1080 discs included), offering the first chance fans of the Twilight franchise have to experience the sequels in that format (Lionsgate previously released Twilight 4K way back in 2018, and the disc(s) in this set seem to be the same as the first 4K release). Potentially adding to the value of this set is the fact that all of the 1080 versions are the two disc releases, and the 4K UHD discs have all received upgraded Dolby Atmos audio.

Martin Liebman's The Twilight Saga: Eclipse Blu-ray review of the first 1080 release provides an apt plot summary and technical analysis.

The Twilight Saga: Eclipse 4K Blu-ray Movie, Video Quality  4.5 of 5

Note: Screenshots are sourced from the 1080 disc.

The Twilight Saga: Eclipse is presented in 4K UHD courtesy of Lionsgate with an HVEC / H.265 encoded 2160p transfer in 2.40:1. Like the first two films, this was a 35mm shoot and had a 2K DI, but I have to say to my eyes this is a markedly more pleasing effort overall than the first two films. While there are still vestiges of the kind of splotchy yellow grain that shows up pretty recurrently in the first two efforts, grain resolution is much more tightly controlled this time around, offering a nice organic texture while relatively rarely descending into chunky pixellation. As with New Moon in particular, Dolby Vision and/or HDR may add some highlights (I'd argue mostly in the blue to teal ranges, as in an opening onslaught of icy blue-green rain sequences), things again can look kind of cool and tamped down, with flesh tones occasionally looking a bit brown and even desaturated. There are still some very appealingly warmer moments, though, including some of the scenes set next to water and some of the more brightly lit outdoor material with Bella and Jacob. Detail levels are generally excellent throughout.

The Twilight Saga: Eclipse 4K Blu-ray Movie, Audio Quality  4.5 of 5

As with the other films in this set, The Twilight Saga: Eclipse receives an upgraded Dolby Atmos track, but also as with the first two films, there may not be a huge difference in surround activity when comparing the Atmos version to the previously released DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 track on the 1080 disc. There is clear activity emanating from the Atmos speakers literally from the get go, with the kind of fun rain effect "dousing" the Summit masthead, and as with New Moon in particular, the Atmos version probably most noticeably offers some differentiation from the DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 track with regard to ambient environmental effects, including everything from the aforementioned rain to breezes rustling through forest trees and/or fields. The score, which again features some solo piano cues along with more traditional orchestral work, provides more immersive listening as well. Dialogue is rendered cleanly and clearly throughout. My score is 4.75. Optional English and Spanish subtitles are available.

The Twilight Saga: Eclipse 4K Blu-ray Movie, Overall Score and Recommendation  3.5 of 5

This third film has what to my eyes is the best looking 4K transfer of the first triptych in the Twilight franchise, and as with the other films, the newly offered Atmos track also provides at least marginally improved immersion. The glut of supplements and handsome SteelBook packaging will no doubt appeal to fans of the franchise.
