Note: This version of this film is available as part of The Twilight Saga: 5-Movie Collection 4K.
Just a few weeks after Lionsgate offered a so-called "wide release" of The Twilight Saga: The Complete Collection on 1080 discs, the studio is once again partnering with Best
Buy for a series of exclusive SteelBook releases presenting the Twilight films in 4K (with 1080 discs included), offering the first chance fans
of
the Twilight franchise have
to experience the sequels in that format (Lionsgate previously released
Twilight
4K way back in 2018, and the disc(s) in this set seem to be the same as the first 4K release). Potentially adding to the value of this set is
the fact that all of the 1080 versions are the two disc releases, and the 4K UHD discs have all received upgraded Dolby Atmos audio.
Note: Screenshots are sourced from the 1080 disc.
The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 2 is presented in 4K UHD courtesy of Lionsgate with an HVEC / H.265 encoded 2160p transfer in
2.40:1. Once again as with the former films in the series, this was shot on 35mm and finished at 2K. I'd rate this as one of the two best looking 4K
versions in this set, along with The Twilight Saga:
Eclipse 4K. Dolby Vision / HDR add considerable luster to already impressive visuals starting from the get go with the arresting credits
footage, which combines deeply saturated reds with black and white imagery and what might be called almost "microscopic" looks at various things, all
of which achieves nice precision in palette, contrast and fine detail. As with Breaking Dawn - Part 1, I'd also argue that this is a case where,
unlike the first three films, Dolby Vision / HDR tend(s) to warm the proceedings rather than to cool them, and once again some luscious reds, oranges
and yellows are especially notable, though the cooler end of the spectrum is certainly well represented in some cobalt blue tinged nighttime sequences
as well. Detail levels are at least marginally improved from the 1080 release. As with all the other 4K versions in this set, there are some more than
noticeable variances in suffusion, clarity and grain structure, but some of the outdoor material in particular in this film boasts very impressive depth of
field, nice overall fine detail levels, and a generally tightly resolved grain field. Interestingly, some of the interior scenes can display more of a chunky
yellow grain field.
As with my comments vis a vis the audio on Breaking Dawn - Part 1, my 4.5 score for the Dolby Atmos track on this disc should probably not be perceived as any kind of "downgrade" from Marty's 5.0 score for the DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 track on the old 1080 disc, other than the fact that as I've mentioned in some of the reviews for other films in this set, the Atmos track is not substantially different from the 5.1 track. There's still appealing verticality and clear emanations from the Atmos speakers with regard to ambient environmental effects in particular, and even some occasional bits of scoring, but this is a relatively reserved Atmos rendering, as with the other films in the series. That said, immersion is consistent and noticeable throughout the presentation, buoyed by the repeated use of outdoor locations, where a nice panoply of ambient environmental sounds surround the listener. Dialogue is rendered cleanly and clearly throughout. Optional English and Spanish subtitles are available.
4K UHD Disc
The Twilight series had the good sense to start and end on relative high notes, and commendably the technical merits of this new 4K version are among the best in the SteelBook set release. Once again, a surplus of supplements and handsome SteelBook packaging may help to sweeten the deal for franchise fans.
