There's different, there's oddball, and then there's The Sheep Detectives, Director Kyle Balda's (Minions) cozy and family friendly story of sheep that solve a murder mystery. Yes, you read that right: sheep that solve a murder mystery. The film, based on the novel "Three Bags Full" by Leonie Swann, follows a flock of sheep that set out to solve a murder: not of one of their own, but of their human shepherd. The film is uniquely angled but at the same time very cozy and warm, lightly funny, and surprisingly capable of finding and exploring the human condition through four-legged characters. And it works. What could have been a short gimmick is a satisfying feature-length film that's sure to entertain, and move, audiences of all ages.

Sheep are notoriously dumb animals, but apparently that stigma doesn't apply to the herd under the care of Shepherd George Hardy (Hugh Jackman). George is a kind and well natured shepherd who loves his sheep. Part of his routine in caring for them is reading detective novels to them every night. He thinks they're just learning his voice, but they're actually learning about detective work. See, Georges flock actually understands what he's reading. Sadly, George is one day found dead, and his sheep immediately begin to suspect that foul play is involved. A crowd of four legged investigators, led by Lily (Julia Louis-Dreyfus), emerges on the scene, taking it upon themselves to use what they've learned from George's books and solve George's murder. At the same time, human officer Tim Derry (Nicholas Braun) and reporter Elliot Matthews (Nicholas Galitzine) lead the charge in the human investigation. As the investigations get underway, it becomes apparent that all is not as idyllic in this otherwise serene rural community as it appears on the surface.

The Sheep Detectives walks that very fine line between accessibility and seriousness, between pulling in the kids who are in it for the novelty of talking sheep and the adults who are more concerned with the whodunit aspect of the story. Partway through, the central mystery overtakes the gimmick of talking sheep to the point that the four-legged and fluffy protagonists are still the focus, but their species is not. Each of them is given a unique and engaging personality that makes all of them in some way relatable and understandable. They're not "sheep;" they become "characters." They engage with real emotions and are driven by real purpose, and the mystery is complex enough to keep them working and the audience guessing along the way. The one-two punch of relatable character traits and well disguised mystery makes the film stand far above its visual base and central gimmick, which leads it into Babe territory as one of the more unforgettable "talking animal" movies of all time.

One of the necessary components of any film of this sort is voice acting. Without top-notch voice work, the movie's going to fall flat no matter how involved the mystery, how cute the characters, how well made the rest of the experience. Each human that voices a sheep does so with tangible depth. None of them feel like stock characters, and while there's a good diversity of personality, none of them feel pigeonholed or stereotypical or one trick ponies. All of them bring real complexities to the characters, and the film is far better for the serious engagement and smart writing behind them. Jackman, who is best known for his rough-and-tumble work in the Marvel movies, is fantastic as George, creating a warm and welcoming character who makes it easy to love and easy to believe that his flock loves him, too. The film is beautifully shot and its locations are gorgeous, both sprawling exteriors and cozy interiors alike. The special effects are seamless, which isn't always a given even in 2026.

What also isn't a given in 2026 is the sheer amount of warmth and heart the movie exudes, and beyond anything else -- the story, the voice work, the sets and locations, the special effects -- it's the film's tenderness, approachability, and accessibility where it truly shines. There's not much fat here, there are no wasted character beats, the humor hits home, and the emotional currents are perfectly ebbing and flowing in all three acts. Better still, it's unafraid to tackle tough emotional issues in very relatable, sincere, and embracing ways. They rarely make them like this anymore, which makes them special when they do show up. This one is special.

No UHD? No problem. While I have no doubt that a UHD would have only amplified The Sheep Detectives for home viewing, Alliance's 1080p presentation looks absolutely gorgeous on Blu-ray. The picture is clean, efficient, crisp, and never misses a beat. Overall detail is fantastic. Every sheep detail is tactile, every location detail is sharp, even skin pore is deep, every fabric stitch is tangible, every blade of grass is visible and perfectly defined. The picture just bursts off the screen with perfect detail and definition. Colors are likewise bold and brilliant. Every shade is vivid but never overcooked; bright and bold as they are, there's a very natural, organic look to the color presentation. The image is simply swimming in brilliant hues, and the lively presentation never eases up. The lush green countryside is a standout, as are various clothing hues and even the more earthy sheep colors. Skin tones are natural, white balance is terrific, and black level depth is superb. There's no noise or encode problems to report, either. This is a fantastic presentation from Alliance Entertainment. Sure, a UHD would have been welcome, but this is as reference as reference gets on the old 1080p format.

Alliance brings The Sheep Detectives to Blu-ray with a Dolby Atmos soundtrack. This track is not so much about frenzied activity as it is gently immersive ambience with some key bolder components thrown in. An thunderstorm in chapter three is certainly a standout for stage fill, delivering crisp low end depth and full stage engagement with the booms and driving rain, including some tangible overhead details that absolutely draw the listener into the moment. While that stands as probably the most sonically muscular and aggressive moment in the film, the track is very capable of creating a sense of atmospheric space that brings the idyllic countryside to life, especially gentle breezes sand chirping birds. But, at the same time, these lesser elements don't really engage the height channels, so audiences should set their expectations for the use of the Atmos channels to be more minimalistic than momentous. That said, the horizontal engagement is quite stellar. Music is nicely defined and pleasantly engaging around the stage. Dialogue is clear and rich as it flows from its natural front-center location.

The Sheep Detectives Blu-ray Movie, Special Features and Extras 

Unfortunately, this Blu-ray release of The Sheep Detectives contains no supplemental content. And, this is just the sort of film that seems to scream for them: a commentary, some behind-the-scenes features exploring the workmanship that went into such an effects heavy film, but there's nothing here. No digital copy code is included, but this release does ship with a slipcover.

What a pleasure! The Sheep Detectives walks off the well beaten path and does something that is at once completely familiar and absurdly different. And it works. It's a rare breed of film that leads with nonhuman characters but works through very human emotions and, oh yes, there's a murder mystery at the heart of it. Kids and adults will both love it, maybe for different reasons, but this is one of the surprise films of 2026 and one of the year's best family outings. The Blu-ray is solid, technically, but the complete absence of extras is both disappointing and a missed opportunity. Still, the release comes with a hearty recommendation for the quality of the film and the solid A/V presentation.
