Reacher shot out of the gate with big muscles and bigger intensity and hasn't looked back. Seasons one and two introduced the character and built the world with grit, energy, and strength, and season three is back for more. The season continues on the pathway established by Lee Child in his novel series and is a more fundamentally sound adaptation than the Tom Cruise feature films which, excellent as they may be, aren't entirely faithful to the source. Season three is classic Reacher, based on Child's novel "Persuader," and is certain to persuade many who watch into hanging around for the coming fourth season.

Season three brings its focus onto Jack Reacher (Alan Ritchson) with all of the screen commanding intensity he brings to the role, which was what season one did so well. The season follows the title character going undercover for the DEA (which reminds me of when NBA legend Shaquille O'Neil expressing interest in undercover work...that sort of size makes that sort of work particularly hard, but this fiction so just roll with it...it's worth it!) to snuff out a particularly rotten baddie named Zachary Beck (Anthony Michael Hall). The assignment brings Reacher face to face with part of his past as he finds himself opposite a very dangerous foe: Francis Xavier Quinn (Brian Tree), a confrontation that sets him on a path to a bloody showdown with Quinn's musclebound bodyguard, Paulie (Olivier Richters).

The plot is solid enough, but it's hardly the only driving force behind season three's success. As with previous outings, it's Ritchson himself who thoroughly dominates the proceedings. His physical presence is matched -- and sometimes overshadowed -- by his skill as an actor, a difficult feat to accomplish for a man of his size. But he's a freak of nature in the best way possible, capturing the very essence of Child's character while demonstrating a command of the screen that gives credibility to the character as written in the books. Ritchson's Reacher is witty and confident, which he can be at his size, but the performance never feels like it's grounded in the actor's physical stature but rather his understanding of character and the art of acting. With season three, Ritchson continues to make the case as the best musclebound actor of hide generation, helped immensely by a wonderful source and a fantastic screenplay that may not break new narrative ground for the show or the larger TV medium but that is a perfectly fine backdrop against which Ritchson effortlessly shines.

Even if the plot isn't necessarily new, it's handled with care and attention to detail that creates authentic tension and brings about legitimate darkness and very real danger for the hero and the people and the world around him. It leads to some fun moments, and it leads to some incredibly dense and intense fight scenes and action exchanges that push the envelope for both raw grit and muscular power, even within the prism of Reacher's brutal first and second seasons. While Recher's foes aren't unique, either, they prove to be every bit the mental and emotional challenge for him, while Paulie gives Reacher his first truly dangerous adversary, an adversary the audience plausibly believes could defeat Reacher, even if the ultimate outcome is never really win doubt because, well, formula, etc. But even so, the season never moves forward without making sure it's on firm footing, and as the narrative develops and the action evolves in tandem, Reacher's third season proves to be a near perfectly balanced entertainer that understands that modern audiences want more than muscle. Reacher's third season provides that "more," and "more" in spades. Even if there are moments when suspension of disbelief is required and predictability rears its ugly head, the season never grows stale or overextends its welcome along its eight crisp and highly engaging episodes.

Reacher: Season Three Blu-ray Movie, Video Quality 

Paramount releases Reacher's third season onto Blu-ray with a stout 1080p transfer that delivers a high performance picture that is without any significant flaws. Image clarity is excellent. There's not a shot, scene, or sequence that struggles to deliver a picture that is as crisp as can be at this resolution, boasting tactile definition to all elements, including facial features, clothing fabrics, and environmental details. There's plenty of density and complexity at work here, and viewers will enjoy the Blu-ray's ability to present it all with clarity and detail that pushes the limits of what the 1080p resolution can accomplish. All but those watching on humongous screens should find this to be a stable, crisp picture that is firm and constant in its excellence. Colors are superb, too. There's definitely some green push to the color timing, but within the season's visual parameters there's a consistency and brilliance that is hard to beat. Colors are rendered with stability and brilliance, never looking worn or downtrodden, and neither do they ever appear over amplified. Within the confines, there's nothing to dislike here. Black levels are very deep, white balance is solid, and skin tones appear healthy. There are no digital artifacts or obvious encode problems to note, either. Reacher looks every bit as good as it should.

Reacher's DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 lossless soundtrack hits hard. And that's what it should do. The presentation is aggressive, with plenty of front-loaded intensity, well executed and balanced surround details, and prominent but not overpowering LFE impact. Action scenes are of course a listener's delight with all pieces fully engaged with balance and clarity to spare, with sound elements racing through each speaker to pull the listener into the show's action frenzies. Of course, slower dialogue scenes are just as impactful for excellence of spoken word and subtle atmospheric engagement. Music is clear and refined with dominant front placement and solid back channel support. In other words, this one's just fine and just as expected for a 2026 Action TV show.

This two-disc Blu-ray release of Reacher: Season Three contains no supplemental content. However, it does ship with a non-embossed slipcover.

Reacher's third season capitalizes on everything that made it a smash hit straight out of the gate in season one. This is arguably its best season so far, delivering everything from another remarkable Ritchson performance to a story that is compelling enough, even if it's not entirely original. The support elements -- everything from production design to action choreography -- carry the season and cover any thematic and dramatic warts that pop up every now and then but never drag the season down. If season four comes anywhere close to season three in terms of overall excellence, it'll be hard to leave Reacher off any discussion of the best Action shows of the 2020s. Paramount's two-disc Blu-ray is unfortunately absent of any supplemental content, but as expected the video and audio presentations are stellar. Highly recommended, and here's oping a 4K version to match seasons one and two isn't far behind.
