The Rolling Stones From the Vault: Live at Leeds Blu-ray Movie Review

Reviewed by Jeffrey Kauffman December 11, 2015

Rolling Stones fans have been gifted with a number of exciting and at least relatively rare releases culled from the Stones’ supposed “vault” over the past several months, including The Rolling Stones: From the Vault - Hampton Coliseum - Live in 1981, The Rolling Stones: From the Vault - The Marquee - Live in 1971, The Rolling Stones: From the Vault — Hyde Park Live, 1969 and The Rolling Stones From the Vault: Live at the Tokyo Dome , and now one stop of the Stones’ 1982 tour is documented in this extremely high energy show culled from a Roundhay Park in Leeds. This was a swan song of sorts for the band, at least from a live performance standpoint and at least for a while if not forever, and it seems that the boys wanted to go “out” on a high note of excitement. Mick is in a lather from virtually the get go here, strutting and posing in his inimitable way through a set that draws largely but not exclusively on the then recent Tattoo You.

The band's set list for the concert is:

Intro
Under My Thumb
When the Whip Comes Down
Let’s Spend the Night Together
Shattered
Neigbours
Black Limousine
Just My Imagination
Twenty Flight Rock
Going to a Go Go
Let Me Go
Time is On My Side
Beast of Burden
You Can’t Always Get What You Want
Little T&A
Angie
Tumbling Dice
She’s So Cold
Hang Fire
Miss You
Honky Tonk Women
Brown Sugar
Start Me Up
Jumpin’ Jack Flash
(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction

The Rolling Stones From the Vault: Live at Leeds Blu-ray Movie, Video Quality  2.5 of 5

Rolling Stones From the Vault Live in Leeds 1982 is presented on Blu-ray courtesy of Universal Music Group and Eagle Vision, an imprint of Eagle Rock Entertainment, with an AVC encoded (upscaled) 1080i transfer in 1.33:1. This latest entry in Eagle Rock's so-called SD Blu-ray series is actually more than serviceable, helped measurably by the fact that the concert takes place outside in relatively bright and natural lighting. As a result while the image certainly doesn't approach anything looking like "true" high definition, colors are rather nicely suffused and detail is at least passable, especially in close-ups. This is one SD Blu-ray that may not need to be "seen" as an audio Blu-ray with questionable video content.

The Rolling Stones From the Vault: Live at Leeds Blu-ray Movie, Audio Quality  4.0 of 5

Rolling Stones From the Vault Live in Leeds 1982 features another nice remastering from Bob Clearmountain, offered here in both DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 and LPCM 2.0 formulations. Perhaps due to the live recording situations, there's a bit of a diffused quality which is perhaps a bit more noticeable in the surround iteration, but both tracks offer good support across all frequency ranges, with excellent fidelity and nicely wide dynamic range.

There are no supplements on the Blu-ray disc. The fourfold digipack includes 2 CDs and a nicely illustrated booklet.

The Rolling Stones From the Vault: Live at Leeds Blu-ray Movie, Overall Score and Recommendation  3.0 of 5

Rolling Stones From the Vault Live in Leeds 1982 is another nice set from a high water mark in the Stones' iconic history, with Mick and the boys playing and singing with a lot of energy and passion, as well as a kind of fun, cheeky attitude at times. Video quality is actually a cut above a lot of the other SD Blu-ray releases that Eagle Rock has offered, and audio quality is fine, given an understanding of some of the challenges of the live recording environment. Recommended.
