The Killer 4K Blu-ray Movie Review

Reviewed by Jeffrey Kauffman June 29, 2026

For home theater aficionados who subscribe to comments on the quality spectrum, as in "this is the best this film will ever look" or alternatively "a restoration would probably be too spendy", there's an adage or two that may be of use, namely "don't make predictions", along with "patience is a virtue" and/or "time changes everything". The (now) little remembered Vivendi Visual Entertainment's Dragon Dynasty imprint released a pretty shoddy 1080 version of The Killer way back in 2010, and my review (linked to below) began with a warning on the deck (the little subtitle that's under some review headings) that the debut of this widely admired film wasn't exactly a good thing, though at least I had the wisdom not to prophesy about any future, hopefully better looking, releases. And that was a (surprisingly?) smart thing, since Shout Factory revisited the title in 2025 (review link below), and now Arrow is joining the fray with both standalone 1080 and 4K UHD releases offering three discs of content (this format offers the main feature on 4K disc with two 1080 discs of additional content including the fan favorite Extended Taiwanese Cut of the film). Unfortunately, Arrow's first pressing had an authoring error on the third disc (more about that below as well), with replacements evidently en route to consumers if they haven't already been delivered, but also unfortunately, both of Arrow's editions sold well enough that they're getting hard to track down.

As mentioned above, The Killer has had previous releases on both 1080 and 4K disc.

The Killer Blu-ray review is my take on the Vivendi Visual 1080 release from 2010.

The Killer 4K Blu-ray review is Stephen Larson's take on the 4K / 1080 combo pack released by Shout Factory in 2025.

The Killer 4K Blu-ray Movie, Video Quality  n/a of 5

Note: This release does not include a 1080 Blu-ray, so these screenshots are taken directly from the 4K UHD disc and downscaled to 1080 and SDR. Color space in particular is therefore not accurate. While there arguably is a 1080 presentation of the film on Disc Three, it's a "Frankensteined" piece per the description included below. Therefore, the 2K score above has been intentionally left blank.

The Killer is presented in 4K UHD courtesy of Arrow Video with an HEVC / H.265 encoded 2160p transfer in 1.85:1. Arrow's insert booklet contains the following information about the presentation:

The Killer / Dip huet seung hung is presented in its original aspect ratio of 1.85:1 with Cantonese and English mono audio and a new Cantonese Dolby Atmos mix. The film has been restored in 4K resolution and graded in HDR10 and Dolby Vision.

The original 35mm camera negative was sourced from the Hong Kong Film Archive and scanned in 4K by Interface Video Production Ltd in Hong Kong.

The new Dolby Atmos mix was produced at Deluxe Audio, London. Audio source materials were accessed from Fortune Star.

The extended 130 minute Taiwanese Cut of The Killer has been remastered in high definition by Brandon Bentley on behalf of Arrow FIlms. This version combines material from the new restored theatrical version a standard definition telecine transfer of a 35mm print of the textended version of the film. In addition to regular changes in picture quality throughout, there are instances in which bunrt in subtitles will appear, as per the extended version print. This version has been created from the best source materials available.
With all of that out of the way, and especially for those who may have already either seen or actually picked up Shout's release from last year, the most salient piece of information is probably that Arrow has once again done additional work on top of the stellar initial efforts by Shout. As Arrow's restoration guru James White has been quoted in some other reviews, Arrow has the luxury of time on their side when approaching these "new" releases for Region B, something that allows them to do additional tweaking. While the underlying foundational elements of this transfer are unsurprisingly similar between the two releases at least in terms of detail levels, the Arrow release offers some distinctly different color timing throughout, with a noticeably cooler ambience than the Shout release. As shoddy as that old Vivendi Visual 1080 release was, it at least offered the same sort of blue tinged palette that this new 4K version does, though unsurprisingly the HDR / Dolby Vision grades offer significant new nuance throughout various tonal gradations, including some of the much more (relatively) warmly timed material. As Stephen mentioned in his review, both restorative work by original colorist Kevin Schneider along with the blandishments added by the HDR / Dolby Vision grades offer some surprising new background detail in some of the darkest scenes. There is also some incredibly vivid material throughout the Dragon Boat sequence in particular, with reds really resonating strongly. Grain is organic looking and tightly resolved throughout.

The Killer 4K Blu-ray Movie, Audio Quality  5.0 of 5

The biggest audio difference between this release and earlier ones is the addition of an often wonderfully immersive Dolby Atmos track (Shout's release offered mono tracks in either Cantonese or English, while the older Vivendi Visual release had lossy Dolby tracks, including an at least relatively decent 5.1 mix in English). The Atmos mix noticeably introduces all sorts of well positioned surround effects that simply are not available in the original mono mixes, and a number of standout moments offer nice verticality, including some aerial helicopter material, as well as a couple of "overhead" demolition moments. As impressive as the actual Atmos speaker engagement is consistent use of the "traditional" surround channels for the action sequences in particular, and there is nice attention paid to directionality throughout. The subwoofer is also generously exploited for some floorboard rattling moments. Dialogue is rendered without any issues. Optional English subtitles are available, including new translations of the Cantonese that I've been told by native speakers are materially more accurate than the ones on the Shout release.

The Killer 4K Blu-ray Movie, Special Features and Extras  5.0 of 5

Note: Several of these supplements were included in the Shout Factory release, and Stephen's above linked review has more information on them.

  • Taiwanese Preview Cut (Unrestored) (HD; 2:09:28) is described as offering a "more consistent (albeit lower quality) viewing experience", with the original scan of the 35mm print, complete with splices and burnt in subtitles.
This Limited Edition comes housed in a slipbox which is itself enclosed in an O ring style slipcover. The slipbox holds the keepcase which has a reversible sleeve and holds six postcard sized reproduction artcards. The Killer 4K Blu-ray Movie, Overall Score and Recommendation  5.0 of 5

The Killer continues to be a landmark of Asian cinema in general, and Woo's filmography in particular. Arrow's release offers secure technical merits and some really appealing supplements and typically handsome packaging, though consumers are advised to go straight to the third disc to see if their remote works on the main feature. Otherwise, though, Highly recommended.
