Bullet in the Head 4K Blu-ray Movie Review

Arrow Video is continuing to mine the John Woo catalog with new standalone 4K UHD and 1080 releases for Region B that in many cases have had a combo pack release in Region A. Perhaps kind of interestingly, especially for such a (now, anyway) widely regarded and well remembered film as this, the 4K / 1080 release from Shout! Factory for Region A (review link below) also came out relatively recently in 2026, evidently the first time the film was released in high definition in that region, though our database shows a few outlier 1080 releases in other regions that appeared significantly earlier. This release from Arrow offers all of the supplements on the Shout! Factory release, along with older archival supplements from the DVD era. This release also features additional color grading and restoration as well as a Dolby Atmos track that weren't offered on the Shout! Factory release.

Bullet in the Head 4K Blu-ray Movie, Video Quality 

Note: While this is a standalone 4K release without a 1080 disc, I am offering screenshots from Arrow's standalone 1080 release of Bullet in the Head as I think it actually provides a better representation of the look of the palette in particular, rather than offering screenshots from the 4K disc which are by necessity downscaled to 1080 and in SDR. Because this release does not include a 1080 disc, the 2K video score above has been intentionally left blank.

Bullet in the Head is presented in 4K UHD courtesy of Arrow Video with an HEVC / H.265 encoded 2160p transfer in 1.85:1. Arrow's insert booklet contains the following information about the presentation:

Bullet in the Head is presented in its original 1.85:1 aspect ratio with Cantonese and English mono audio and a new Cantonese Dolby Atmos mix. The film has been restored in 4K resolution and graded in HDR10 and Dolby Vision.

The original 35mm camera negative was sourced from the Hong Kong Film Archive and scanned in 4K by Interface Video Production Ltd. in Hong Kong. The new Dolby Atmos mix was produced at Deluxe Audio, London. Audio source materials were accessed from Fortune Star.

The high definition master for the Festival Cut of Bullet in the Head was assembled by Shout! Studios using the resotred master and a scan of the last surviving 35mm positive print of this version from the Hong Kong Film Archive.

Putting aside that curious thanks for Irongod2112 that's been showing up on some of these Arrow Woo releases, this is another great looking presentation in both 1080 and 4K from Arrow, though perhaps as odd as that aforementioned thanks is the fact that Arrow kind of "buries the lede" in terms of having done additional color grading and restoration, much as they did with The Killer 4K. The results here once again skew things toward the cooler side of the spectrum, with an emphasis on ice cold blue tones that seem a bit more in line with Woo's aesthetic than the somewhat warmer looking Shout! release. Despite the tweaking of color timing, primaries are absolutely rock solid, and reds and greens, both used repeatedly throughout the production design, resonate incredibly well. The HDR / Dolby Vision grades add some discernable luster in the blue toned material in particular, but really the entire palette sparkles more in this presentation than in Arrow's perfectly fine looking 1080 SDR presentation. As can be seen in some of the screenshots in our Bullet in the Head Blu-ray review of Arrow's 1080 release, there are observable variations in clarity and grain thickness (for a grittier and less clear looking moment, see screenshot 17 of the 1080 review). Those ebbs and flows aside, grain looks natural and resolves without any major issues.

Bullet in the Head 4K Blu-ray Movie, Audio Quality 

Arrow more or less repeats the Shout! Factory release with LPCM Mono tracks in Cantonese and English recreating Shout!'s DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0 Mono offerings in both languages. What will probably get audiophiles' hearts racing a bit here, though, is the addition of a really effective Dolby Atmos reimagining, one that provides clear and convincing use of the surround channels throughout the many exhilarating action sequences. Bullets whiz through discrete channels as they make their way to their targets, the cacophony of fist fights erupts from the side and rear channels, and several epochal explosions engage both the subwoofer and the Atmos speakers. Perhaps surprisingly, then, things remain really well prioritized throughout, and all dialogue is presented without any issues. Optional English subtitles are available.

This is another handsomely packaged Limited Edition from Arrow, with a reversible sleeve and double sided foldout poster. Six postcard sized reproduction artcards are included, along with a perfect bound collectors' booklet with some really interesting new writing by Priscilla Page and Sean Gilman, along with several archival pieces. Everything is housed in a slipbox which itself is enclosed in an O ring type slipcover.

Bullet in the Head 4K Blu-ray Movie, Overall Score and Recommendation 

Some of the fraught production history of Bullet in the Head is covered in the excellent supplementary package included with this release, but the good news is very little of that backstage drama really impacts anything on the screen. Despite being what might be jokingly referred to as the Hong Kong version of Heaven's Gate, kind of like that once derided Michael Cimino effort, Bullet in the Head has been reassessed in the interim and many (including me) consider it one of Woo's absolute best. This release offers top notch technical merits, and some really appealing supplements (I have to say that there's an unintended laugh line in the typically fact filled mile a minute Frank Djeng commentary where he states early on the film never officially defines its time period, a statement made shortly after an onscreen subtitle announces it's 1967). Arrow also provides its typically nicely designed package with some fun non disc swag. Highly recommended.
