The Greatest Demon Lord is Reborn as a Typical Nobody: The Complete Season Blu-ray Movie Review

Reviewed by Neil Lumbard April 21, 2024

The Greatest Demon Lord is Reborn as a Typical Nobody is an action-fantasy with some fun adventure to offer fans of the genre. Based on the Japanese light novel series as written and created by Myōjin Katō with original character designs and illustrations by Sao Mizuno, the light novel series was first serialized before becoming published by an imprint. The light novel series was then adapted into both a manga and anime series.

The Greatest Demon Lord is Reborn as a Typical Nobody features theme song music performed by Ayaka Ōhashi (opening) and ChouCho (ending). The Greatest Demon Lord is Reborn as a Typical Nobody features animation production by BLADE (Hokkaido Gals Are Super Adorable!, Iwa-Kakeru! -Sport Climbing Girls-) and SILVER LINK. (Alice in Borderland, Fate/kaleid liner Prisma Illya). The anime adaptation was first broadcast between April 6th, 2022 and June 22nd, 2022. The series features voice performances by Toshinari Fukamachi, Wakana Maruoka, and Hina Yomiya.

The all-powerful demon-lord Varvatos reigned over the land thousands of years ago. Now the demon lord finds himself born anew when reincarnated as the young and ordinary commoner, Ard Meteor (Toshinari Fukamachi). Demon Lord Varvatos had decided to commit suicide because of boredom.

Varvatos is now encountering new challenges as the reincarnated youth. The reincarnated Ard is bestowed with a vast array of skills and knowledge belonging to Varvatos. Now Ard becomes close friends with the elf Ireena Litz de Olhyde (Wakana Maruoka).

Ard and Ireena join the prestigious Academy of Magic. Ard soon meets the gorgeous succubus Ginny Fin de Salvan (Hina Yomiya) and is tossed into a tug-of-war between Ireena and Ginny – both dying to be with Ard romantically. An abundance of adventures await in the horizon and perhaps some steamy encounters, no less!

The series benefits by having a decent lead character. Ard Meteor is a reasonable lead character. Even if not the most compelling protagonist around, Ard Meteor is nonetheless moderately compelling as the hero of the tale. The series is more enjoyable as a result – exploring the realm of the hero who one wouldn’t expect to be a hero – a reborn demon lord some might look at as nothing more than an ordinary loser. This is part of the joke inherent in the title of the series.

The character designs by Takayuki Noguchi (Girls Beyond the Wasteland, The Demon Sword Master of Excalibur Academy) add to the series, too. The lead character designs fits the character perfectly. The design reflects a character that isn’t some all-powerful athlete but instead a somewhat scrawny nerd who most people wouldn’t consider demonic. The supporting cast of characters have good designs reflecting the character personalities as well.

The animation is reasonably good (even if not the most impressive one will see in the genre). The series art features art direction by Yūya Yoshiyama (The World's Finest Assassin). The art direction is decent, overall. The animation direction works well for the series sense of style, too.

The animators build an interesting visual landscape for the characters and the journey they go on. Given the genre explores fantasy elements, the animation capably emphasizes these components of the story and brings these elements moments to shine. The animation team worked together to build something capably of exploring the series storytelling universe.

The cinematography by Atsushi Satō (Non Non Biyori, Wise Man's Grandchild) is a highlight with crisp and engaging visuals to enhance the production. The cinematography creates a colorful and vibrant landscape as needed and a darker aesthetic when the moment arises. The cinematography fits the production to a tee.

The action animation direction by Kazunori Ozawa (Battle Girl High School, Sorcerous Stabber Orphen -Doom of Dragon's Sanctuary-) is compelling. The action direction adds to the series. The action helps build for the series sense of energetic style. Though the action scenes might not be as good as with certain series – it’s certainly no classic in the vein of Dragon Ball Z, Yu Yu Hakusho, My Hero Academia, and One Piece, The Greatest Demon Lord is Reborn as a Typical Nobody is still decent overall with some compelling sequences.

The score composed by Takeshi Nakatsuka (Magical Girl Ore, My Dress-Up Darling) adds to the series sense of energy.  The music highlights the characters and the action beats of the series. The score explores the fantasy setting and the drama of the storytelling universe. A decent score for the production.

Written by Michiko Yokote (Bermuda Triangle: Colorful Pastrale, The Dreaming Boy Is a Realist), The Greatest Demon Lord is Reborn as a Typical Nobody isn’t a new classic by any means but it does have some fun with the concept of a demon-lord reborn as a “loser” – an ordinary guy. Yokote has fun with the script. The dialogue is decent overall and fits the characters personalities reasonably well.

Directed by Mirai Minato (BOFURI: I Don't Want to Get Hurt, so I'll Max Out My Defense., Our Last Crusade or the Rise of a New World), The Greatest Demon Lord is Reborn as a Typical Nobody is something that doesn’t really break any new ground but it does provide some fantasy-action to entertain audiences. Fans of the genre may wish to indulge and check it out if nothing else seems appealing in the moment. Minato is a competent director and someone who understands the genre narrative.
