The Chosen (2022-2023)
After Jesus delivers the most impactful sermon in history, the disciples assume life will improve now that they're following the Messiah. Judas has joined the group, Simon and Eden are reunited, and everyone is ready to live out His teachings. But problems emerge quickly. The pressure increases from the Romans and the religious leaders, and with thousands of pilgrims pursuing Jesus, the disciples can't decide if they should hide or fight. They get even more confused when they face everything from a marital crisis to a disastrous mission, and Jesus doesn't immediately provide solutions. It all reaches a stunning climax when Jesus and the disciples are surrounded by over 5,000 people in a dangerous region, and with tensions high, they run out of food. Until a little boy with five loaves and two fishes shows up... Enjoy this critically acclaimed, award-winning season like never before! This Special Edition features the highest quality presentation available, and includes the most complete collection of bonus features available on disc.

The Chosen Blu-ray Movie, Special Features and Extras

Angel Studios releases The Chosen' third season as a six-disc special edition. The packaging is very reminiscent of the previous two such
releases. I'll leave links (one and two) that offer good details on the box's basic layout, which is
essentially unchanged, as well as dimensions, which are just about the same. The included screenshots are of the various supplements found in this
set. Below is a breakdown and reviews of what's included, and where. There are no digital copies included with this release.
Disc One:
- Sounds of the Story: The episodes "Homecoming" and "Two by Two" are presented with the musical score only in The Dolby Digital 2.0 format.
Disc Two:
- Sounds of the Story: The episodes "Physician, Heal Yourself" and "Clean, Part 1" are presented with the musical score only in The Dolby Digital 2.0 format.
Disc Three:
- Sounds of the Story: The episodes "Clean, Part 2" and "Intensity in Tent City" are presented with the musical score only in The Dolby Digital 2.0 format.
Disc Four:
- Sounds of the Story: The episodes "Ears to Hear" and "Sustenance" are presented with the musical score only in The Dolby Digital 2.0 format.
Disc Five:
- Biblical Roundtables (1080p): This is the disc that really begins to showcase the meat in this special edition set. This disc houses eight roundtable discussions ranging from 20 minutes to 41 minutes, featuring Dallas Jenkins joined by the show's biblical consultants: Father David Guffey (Catholic perspective), Rabbi Jason Sobel (Jewish perspective) and Dr. Doug Huffman (Evangelical perspective). The group discusses several events from the series and examines how the show presents the theology, culture, history, geography and politics of the era with each consultant offering their own unique perspective on the episodes. Included are Episode 1 (37:03), Episode 2 (39:36), Episode 3 (52:09), Episode 4 (35:14), Episode 5 (32:02), Episode 6 (33:12), Episode 7 (31:59), and Episode 8 (39:42).
Disc Six:
- Walking on Water: The Unexpected Finale of Season 3 (1080p, 32:00): Cast and crew discuss the difficulties of filming the iconic scene and why they chose to film this biblical miracle. The stated goal of the series from the beginning has been character over spectacle, so the writers and creatives needed to discover an emotional and spiritual reason to film the scene. they discuss why Simon-Peter needed to have a trial that the audience could relate to so that the faith and doubt portrayed in the scene would be more meaningful. Participants discuss the choice to make the scene more realistic so that it truly looked like Jesus and Peter walking on water not just standing in the midst of it. They also cover the logistics of filming with blue screens and explore the cameras and props used to create the scenes. The cast discusses the difficulties of filming with wind, rain, and waves as well as special effects and how easy it was to portray authenticity while filming the scene. They also discuss the difficulties of maintaining the visual effects for a prolonged scene without the audience being pulled out the action.
- Loaves & Fishes: The Making of Season 3 (1080p, 35:10): Cast and crew discuss how the season escalates the characters and their relationships with Jesus as the show moves ever closer to the known destination. The question of "What is the Messiah here to do?" comes across more clearly here and the disciples have to grapple with their decisions to follow Jesus. Decisions about the story and how the characters are portrayed are also discussed, especially the female characters and the decision to depict a character dealing with a miscarriage. Discussions also include the desire to both show the works of Jesus and show how the those around him were personally changed by their relationship with Him. It also discuss the difficulties of filming the feeding of the 5,000 and the walking on water scenes. The friendships between the cast and crew are also discussed, as are the differences various cast and crew have experienced working on this show as opposed to others.
- Privilege of a Lifetime: Jonathan and Dallas Reflect on Making The Chosen (1080p, 43:41): Director Dallas Jenkins and actor Johnathan Roumie (Jesus) discuss their relationship and how they have worked to create The Chosen. Topics include the show's early beginnings, the struggle of how to accurately portray the humanity of Jesus, how the show has grown, difficulties in creating a show based on the Bible, the temptation to fall for fame and listen to criticisms that impact the show, the struggle to film with 10,000 fans present, the challenges of filming the more difficult scenes (walking on water), thoughts on the future of the show, how their relationship with God has impacted the scenes and characters portrayed, and the joys and problems of filming.
- Season 3 Trailers (1080p): The Chosen Season 3 Teaser (1:00) and The Chosen Season 3 Official Trailer (2:32) are included.
- Episodes 1-8 Full Scripts (1080p): Script pages for all 8 episodes are included in a auto-advancing slide show format.
- Additional Features (1080p): Several short featurettes that showcase different elements of the shoot, the production, and the story.
- Why Did Jesus Pair Up the Disciples (1080p, 5:31): Cast and writing staff discuss plotting the pairings in episode Two by Two since the biblical reference doesn't elaborate on the scene. Includes comments from Jonathan Roumie (Jesus), Noah James (Andrew), Austin Reed Alleman (Nathanael), writer Tyler Thompson, Abe Bueno-Jallad (Big James), George Xanthis (John), Joey Vahedi (Thomas), Paras Patel (Matthew), Alaa Safi (Simon Z), Luke Dimyan (Judas), Giavani Cairo (Thaddeus), and Yoshi Barrigas (Philip).
- Jesus' Sermon Wrecks Matthew (1080p, 3:05): Paras Patel discusses his portrayal of Matthew as being "on the spectrum," how that characteristic made the character more relatable, and also how he showed the character's growth through hearing the teachings of Jesus and trying to reconcile to his family.
- Actor Who Plays Apostle Embraces His Limp (1080p, 9:19): Jordan Ross (Little James) discusses his own disability and how he was able to work his personal emotions into his character. He also discusses the emotions he worked into his character, and which he experienced personally, when Little John is given the ability to heal others while remaining unhealed himself. He also discusses how filming the scenes helped him embrace his own experiences and love and accept himself as he is.
- Season 3 Filming Ends, and the Games Begin (1080p, 9:10): Various cast and crew reflect on how they feel as filming ends. They also share some of their favorite scenes.
- A Rabbi, A Priest, and An Evangelical Fact-Check The Chosen (1080p, 6:25): A sneak peak of the Biblical Roundtables for Season 3 including short interviews with Dallas Jenkins and Biblical Consultants Father David Guffey, Rabbi Jason Sobel and Dr. Doug Huffman about how they contribute to the show.
- Behind the Scenes Photo Slideshow (1080p): Various images from the show and behind the scenes for Season 3.
The Chosen Blu-ray Movie, Overall Score and Recommendation

It's wonderful to have another large boxed set of The Chosen available. The highlights here, as with the previous issues, are the "Biblical Roundtable" discussions that delve deep into each episode with a handful of theologians who approach the material from various faith perspectives. The additional extras are nice, too, though perhaps commentaries, as were included on season two, would have made a great package all the better. The video and audio presentations appear unchanged from the standard release, so fans are still getting top-notch 1080p efforts and solid enough 5.1 lossy audio. Highly recommended!
