Star Trek V: The Final Frontier 4K Blu-ray Movie Review
Reviewed by Martin Liebman September 10, 2022Paramount has released 'Star Trek V: The Final Frontier' to UHD with a a brand new 2160p/Dolby Vision transfer. The disc replaces the imperfect 2009 issue. No new primary audio track or supplemental contents are included. This disc is available individually and is also available as part of a six-film UHD boxed set.

Shore leave is cut short when the newly designed Enterprise -- registration NCC-1701-A -- is called upon to resolve a hostage crisis on the planet Nimbus III, a world settled jointly in the name of "galactic peace" by the Federation, the Klingons, and the Romulans. Each of these powers' emissaries to the world is taken captive by a renegade Vulcan named Sybok (Laurence Luckinbill) who devises a scheme to overpower the Federation forces and hijack their starship for the purpose of traveling to the edge of the galaxy in search of God. Though with only a skeleton crew and plenty of technical problems plaguing the ship, the Enterprise heads to Nimbus III, only to fall prey to Sybok's plan. With the Enterprise crew enchanted by Sybok's mystical ability to ease the burden of deeply rooted individual pain and suffering, the ship heads towards a world that may be home to God while a Klingon Bird-of-Prey pursues.

Star Trek V: The Final Frontier 4K Blu-ray Movie, Video Quality

The included screenshots are sourced from the remastered 1080p Blu-ray disc included in this set.
Paramount's 2160p/Dolby Vision UHD release of Star Trek V: The Final Frontier beams onto the format with an incredible transfer that offers
a
substantial gain even over the companion and concurrently released remastered Blu-ray. The picture is absolutely striking for its film authenticity, high detail
yield, grain excellence, and color delights. The grain is firm and fine, a perfect and flattering component that presents the film with a remarkably
stable
and pleasing cinematic flair. Underneath is a super sharp image that captures a level of clarity and detail well beyond the Blu-ray. Look at Kirk's blue
shirt climbing the mountain, and the mountain (set piece) itself at the 9:33 mark. The boost from the Blu-ray is obvious for fabric density, facial
detail,
and the rock formation definition, revealing all of the latter's slickness with incredible precision. The picture absolutely delights throughout. On
Nimbus III, no
speck of dust is left anything less than perfectly visible, while grime in the settlements is plainly visible and realistic. Computer terminals on the
Enterprise bridge present with superb clarity. The
rocky formations on Sha Ka Ree have never been so tactile. For as much flak as the film gets, there's no mistaking the incredible clarity and
razor-sharp filmic definition on display. A few softer shots inherent to the original photography are present, but this is otherwise an incredible UHD
transfer.
The Dolby Vision color grading is a major boost for the film. The level of color completeness, boldness, and accuracy go well beyond even the Blu-ray.
Look at Kirk's blue shirt early in the film, up on that mountain. The color is so much deeper and more intense on the UHD. It is very lifelike and just
pops off the screen. Uniform reds are beautifully bold yet not at all garish. Contrast those bold tones with the dusty beiges on Nimbus III which are
themselves deeper and more lifelike; nothingness has rarely been color graded so wonderfully as it is here. Black levels delight, whether out in space
or in several
key low light scenes in the Enterprise observation lounge. White uniform colors and Sybock's attire sparkle. Skin tones look perfectly natural.
There are no source blemishes or encode flaws; this is a top-of-the-line UHD presentation from Paramount.
Note that this disc would not play on my Panasonic DP-UB9000; which is my primary playback device; I had to review the disc off of my box Series X
where it worked just fine.

Star Trek V: The Final Frontier 4K Blu-ray Movie, Overall Score and Recommendation

Maligned though the film may be, its spectacular new UHD transfer will be thoroughly celebrated. Paramount has done a wonderful job on this UHD and brought much needed newfound life to the film. While the audio and supplements are simply ports, the content remains very good even all these years later. Highly recommended.
