Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country 4K Blu-ray Movie Review

Reviewed by Martin Liebman September 9, 2022

Paramount has released 'Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country' to the UHD format with a remastered 2160p/Dolby Vision transfer. The disc replaces the imperfect 2009 issue. No new primary audio track or supplemental contents are included. This disc is available individually and has also been released on remastered Blu-ray. This UHD release may also be purchased as part of a six-film UHD boxed set.

When the Klingon moon Praxis -- a primary energy production facility -- suddenly explodes, the Klingon species finds itself unable to recover and on the verge of extinction. In an effort to both save the Klingons and bring peace to a long-troubled relationship, the Federation agrees to help the Klingons, assistance that includes dismantling part of the fleet across the neutral zone. Spock volunteers Kirk, the Enterprise, and her crew to escort the Klingon Chancellor, Gorkon (David Warner), through federation space to a peace conference. Kirk rejects both the mission and its purpose, proclaiming his distrust of the Klingons. Nevertheless, the Enterprise carries out her orders, but relationships become further strained when the ship seems to fire on the Klingon Cruiser and a pair of assassins beam aboard the vessel and murder the chancellor. Kirk and McCoy beam over to the Cruiser to ascertain the situation, are arrested, and ultimately found guilty of the assassination. Sentenced to life imprisonment on the harsh penal colony of Rura Penthe, the pair must not only struggle to escape but to save their very lives on a daily basis. Meanwhile, the Enterprise crew vigorously searches for answers in hopes of identifying the true assassins before they have a chance destroy any hopes of achieving peace.

The included screenshots are sourced from the remastered 1080p Blu-ray disc.

This 2160p/Dolby Vision UHD release of Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country was "remastered from the original film elements." The results are spectacular, besting even the wonderful remastered Blu-ray for precision, grain management, and overall filmic appearance. Grain appears a little more even here, with less density changes, however minor that may be on the Blu-ray. The picture here is very faithfully true to the source and the film medium. Details are very crisp, obviously well beyond the DNR Blu-ray of yore and surpassing the aforementioned remastered Blu-ray not by leaps and bounds but certainly with enough resolution gain to boast enhanced skin and environmental details that bring out the very best on faces, bridge appointments, and the mines on Rura Penthe. Small uniform fabric details delight in close-up as well.

From the purple titles and the purple-ish blast from the Praxis explosion, viewers will know that are in for a treat. The Dolby Vision colors are richer here compared to the Blu-ray, offering firmer, but still not at all garish, red uniform tones. The blue captain's chair on the Excelsior stands out as a particularly rich shade, though still a bit toned down overall. This grading certainly distinguishes itself from the Blu-ray; it's brighter for sure, and there is less of an obvious red push to skin tones. Some colors look deeper, others a little more neutrally adjusted, but the feel for precision is unmissable. Various grayscale surfaces are deep and true. Black levels are superior here and the white collars on uniforms are far crisper and more lifelike. This is a very true, authentic look for the film. Add the absence of print flaws and encode issues and this is easily the new standard for visual excellence for this release.

Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country 4K Blu-ray Movie, Overall Score and Recommendation  4.5 of 5

Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country remains one of the great Star Trek films, and it has finally earned a proper UHD release after being curiously and inexplicably absent from the previous 4K Star Trek boxed set. This image is sourced from the new 4K master which looks terrific and is both a great leap forward from the previous 2009 issue and a solid step forward from the concurrently released remastered Blu-ray. No new audio tracks or supplemental materials are available, but what's here is great. Highly recommended.
