Star Trek: Insurrection Blu-ray Movie Review

Reviewed by Martin Liebman April 4, 2023

Paramount has re-released the 1998 Sci-Fi film 'Star Trek: Insurrection' to the Blu-ray format. New specifications include remastered 1080p video and Dolby TrueHD 7.1 lossless audio. Supplements from the original release carry over. A standalone UHD disc is also available, which may also be purchased as part of a four film UHD boxed set.

The Federation, alongside a species called the Son'a, is secretly observing a primitive, pre-industrial society called the Ba'ku. On the mission, Data goes haywire and exposes the Federation's cloaked observation facility. Learning of his second officer's malfunction, Captain Picard convinces the Federation officer overseeing the project -- Admiral Dougherty (Anthony Zerbe) -- to allow him to wrangle the rogue Lieutenant-Commander. Taking the Enterprise into an area of space known as "The Briar Patch," Picard successfully retrieves Data but soon begins to piece together a much larger puzzle, revealing a Federation-backed plan to relocate the Ba'ku against their will and in violation of the Prime Directive. Uncomfortable with Starfleet's position, Picard takes matters into his own hands, defying orders and standing up for the rights of the innocent Ba'ku and the very principles that guide Starfleet and the Federation.

Star Trek: Insurrection Blu-ray Movie, Video Quality  5.0 of 5

Paramount brings Star Trek: Insurrection to Blu-ray with a wonderfully and newly remastered 1080p transfer. This is an extraordinarily attractive image. The lush natural greens and sun-soaked locations seen at the beginning of the film look wonderful. The natural color brilliance is stable and pleasing, as are the white dress uniforms seen on the Enterprise-E in the following sequence. Color output thrives under these bright light sources but also in lower light, too, and even when grays and blacks dominate the frame. The color grading is spot-on with healthy, natural tones the norm and naturally inclined grading and temperature leading the way. Black levels are likewise very good and skin tones look perfect.

Further, the image enjoys a fruitfully filmic appearance. Grain is very light but present. There are no signs of needless grain reduction on display, leaving the picture appearing healthy and cinematic. Further, there are no immediately obvious print issues or encode troubles, either. The result is a clean, efficient image in its natural state. Fine detail is exquisite; this is easily the sharpest of the first three TNG movies on remastered Blu-ray. Facial and uniform textures are particularly stout, especially considering the latter and the newer, denser fabrics in the DS9 style. Some of the CGI shot are unconvincing, but that's the source, not the transfer. This is a beautiful image on every level.

Star Trek: Insurrection Blu-ray Movie, Audio Quality  5.0 of 5

Paramount has also upgraded the audio from the previous issue's 5.1 lossless soundtrack to, here, a Dolby TrueHD 7.1 audio experience. The track is wonderful. Action scenes are spot-on for intensity and engagement. Bass is prominent when phaser blasts hit hard. Space combat scenes are full of punch and intensity, all perfectly defined and seamlessly balanced. The shuttle chase sequence, in which Picard and Worf hunt down a rogue Data, offers seamless swooping effects around the stage. Musical engagement is powerful but refined, offering seamless front end spread and perfect surround integration all while maintaining first-rate low-end heft and detail. Light atmospheric supports around the ship and on the planet surface seamlessly immerse the listener into the locations. Dialogue is clear and center positioned for the duration. One could not ask for more out of a 7.1 track.
