Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home 4K Blu-ray Movie Review

Reviewed by Martin Liebman September 22, 2021

CBS/Paramount brings 'Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home' to the UHD format with a new 2160p/Dolby Vision video presentation; the studio has chosen to repurpose the existing Dolby TrueHD 7.1 lossless soundtrack. All of the supplements carry over from the 2009 Blu-ray, which has itself received a facelift. At time of writing, this UHD is only available as part of a four film UHD bundle with Star Trek: The Motion Picture.' 'Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan,' 'Star Trek III: The Search for Spock.'

With Mr. Spock recovered from his rebirth and once again a fully-capable Starfleet officer, the Enterprise bridge crew votes unanimously to return to Earth to face the charges levied against them. On their way home in a commandeered Klingon Bird-of-Prey, they learn that a mysterious probe has arrived at Earth, sending out a signal that baffles Starfleet Command and simultaneously causing a string of environmental disasters that threaten Earth's power reserves. Spock surmises that the probe's signal may not be meant for humans, and verifies his theory when he discovers that it is indeed a replication of the songs sung by humpback whales, an extinct species in the 23rd century. The only solution is to slingshot around the sun in an effort to travel back in time, retrieve a pair of whales, and return them to the 23rd century so they may communicate with the probe before it destroys the planet.

Rather than take a backwards step, Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home slingshots ahead onto the UHD format with a very satisfying 2160p/Dolby Vision presentation. While it lacks the finesse of Star Trek: The Motion Picture and Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan on UHD, looking a little more like Star Trek III: The Search for Spock (which Nimoy also directed) in terms of the sharper grain element and lesser overall crispness, the UHD nevertheless offers an agreeable picture in total. Definition is clearly superior to the remastered Blu-ray, offering better grain management and a more authentic film-like veneer but also more intimately intricate detailing across faces, uniforms, the battered Bird of Prey interiors, and particularly the San Francisco streets where rich textural diversity proves especially excellent for the duration. Within the larger UHD sphere this is not a standout, but it's easily the finest the film has looked for home consumption, particularly as it holds true to the filmic roots.

The Dolby Vision color grading certainly beefs up some of the more expressive colors in the film: a bright yellow wall at the 42:56 mark, Gillian's blue pickup truck seen at the 54:36 mark, and so on. The level of increased vividness, depth, and punch are welcome and serve as one of the top reasons to choose the UHD over the Blu-ray. The color gamut runs fairly wide here, with the opening act appearing dark and murky but the colors liven quite a bit later on. Even at its darkest and dimmest, however, the added contrast, depth, and accuracy all render the image looking rather splendid. Add in crisp and bright whites, excellently deep blacks, and healthy flesh tones, and the picture's color output satisfies through the entire journey.

Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home 4K Blu-ray Movie, Overall Score and Recommendation  4.5 of 5

The Voyage Home remains the most fundamentally fun of the Star Trek films, if Khan isn't still the best overall film. Paramount has done well by this one on UHD. The 2160p/Dolby Vision presentation looks good overall. The studio has chosen not to upgrade audio or supplements but the existing carryover content is solid. Highly recommended.
