There are few things more pleasant in modern media than seeing an action-packed anime effortlessly embrace the power fantasy of seeing an underdog transform into an unstoppable force of nature. While the first season of Solo Leveling depicted Sung Jinwoo’s journey as the weakest hunter in the land transforming into a superhuman entity via mysterious circumstances, Solo Leveling: Season 2 – Arise from the Shadow ramps up everything from the first season, including stronger enemies, larger-scale battles, an even more impressive-looking shadow army, and some of the most dazzling action animation.

Based on the popular web novel and effort by Chugong and DUBU, the second season of the series follows Jinwoo in his efforts to uncover the mystery of the System while ramping up in both skill and experience. Animated by A-1 Pictures and featuring music by Hiroyuki Sawano, this season was released on Blu-ray by Crunchyroll on March 17, 2026, in standard and Limited Edition.

The simple pleasure of watching Jinwoo casually wander into a situation that would have killed any other hunter but grants him a powerful bounty is one of the most significant strengths of the series. Jinwoo’s growth as a character is rarely questioned, but seeing the man who initially panicked inside the dungeon transform before the viewer’s eyes into a confident and intimidating hunter is just as enjoyable.

However, the most significant changes occur on the scale of the competition. Enemies grow stronger and more numerous, requiring Jinwoo to use his resources more strategically, and several episodes depict the most impressive displays of combat that the series has ever seen. The season’s most significant strength is Jinwoo’s Shadow Army – the first season’s first half, introducing this mechanic sees Jinwoo slowly amassing an army of the monsters he has defeated in his travels. However, the second season’s most impressive moments feature him utilizing it as an inseparable part of his combat.

The battle against the ant colony that ruled Jeju Island is the season’s most significant strength. This threat to the world’s balance allows the series to depict the strongest hunters in the world fighting each other with the most impressive displays of their power.

The animation is often remarkable. The staff at A-1 Pictures seem to have recognized that this season is all about power, and they have delivered the animations to match. Jinwoo’s strikes often seem more powerful than ever, the monsters he fights are more fearsome, his Shadow Army provides a dazzling display of its own, and the visual contrast between Jinwoo’s dark powers and the beautiful world around him often adds to the aesthetic appeal of a given battle.

However, this season does not sacrifice its strengths in favor of spectacle. Moments outside the large-scale fights often depict Jinwoo’s personal life, showing the hunter in a more relatable light or advancing the story. Some episodes follow other hunters than Jinwoo himself, who all seem to have unique, interesting motivations. On the other hand, the increased scope and the sheer number of new characters introduced might have diluted the impact of some moments.

This season’s most significant strength, Jinwoo’s growth, is its primary weakness. While Jinwoo is a fascinating character to watch, the series often underprioritizes the rest of its cast. Some characters seem like little more than placeholders, and certain plot elements feel like the series is simply checking boxes on a list to get to the next intriguing story point. The sheer amount of lore revealed is remarkable, but the series’ pace is rarely suited to enjoying the world and its history. Fortunately, Jinwoo’s exciting adventures are always right around the corner.

The voices of the characters in both languages are performed well. Taito Ban as Jinwoo is perfectly consistent throughout the season, realistically conveying his emotions and never trying to over-sell them. His performance is often more powerful than the exposition-heavy Japanese dialogue allows, and his confidence in the role shines through in every line.

The English dub’s cast did an equally amazing job. The musical score by Hiroyuki Sawano is yet another strength, and Sawano appears to have understood that this season’s most crucial element is an overwhelming sense of power. Therefore, every piece perfectly fits the dramatic flair that the series has become known for, with the music never overshadowing the action and dialogue while simultaneously adding to their emotional impact.

Arise from the Shadow is yet another winner for the creators of Solo Leveling and a deserving follow-up for its audience. This season understands its strengths and highlights them without shame. It delivers the spectacle the fandom expects while seldom neglecting the character-driven moments that make Jinwoo a fascinating character to watch.

Solo Leveling: Season 2 Blu-ray Movie, Video Quality 

Released on Blu-ray by Crunchyroll, the North American Blu-ray of Solo Leveling: Season 2 Arise From The Shadow delivers the entire season in 1080p AVC with the original 1.78:1 ratio. The video is encoded using MPEG-4 AVC, and the quality is excellent. The animation is mostly remarkable, and the use of digital media has allowed the artists to capture all the details on screen.

The fine lines and intricate details in character designs, weapons, creature designs, and backgrounds are all rendered in excellent detail. Character faces are expressive and easy to read, clothing textures are well-defined, and the same goes for the monsters Jinwoo fights and the environment he interacts with. The use of dark colors is integral to Solo Leveling's visual presentation, and the excellent rendering of black, blue, gray, and purple colors helps the series maintain its dramatic atmosphere. The video's black levels are also excellent, allowing the series to keep its shadowy aesthetic. However, the detail is not lost in the process, and the variation between individual colors in the dark spectrum is remarkable.

The video presentation also excels in its use of color in particular scenes. The series contrasts dark colors with light ones, making the flashes of blue magic, yellow energy, red projectiles, and other bright objects stand out miles. This is especially noticeable in scenes with explosions or other dazzling displays of energy and light.

Finally, the animation's digital nature allows it to retain exceptional clarity throughout the entire episode without any signs of grain or analog video artifacts. The entire season's video quality is very consistent, with rare instances of compression artifacts during particularly busy or quiet scenes.

1080p is excellent, but this season could have been a true masterpiece if it were native 4K. That being said, this is a fantastic presentation of an already impressive piece of media. The animation is stunning, the colors are vibrant, the dark aesthetics are well-preserved, and the overall clarity is exceptional.

Solo Leveling: Season 2 Blu-ray Movie, Audio Quality 

The audio options include a Japanese Dolby TrueHD 2.0 and an English Dolby TrueHD 5.1 track, with English subtitles. The difference between the two language options is quite astounding. For starters, the English version features a far more robust 5.1 track that utilizes surround channels to create a truly impressive mix.

Both tracks have excellent dialogue, but the 5.1 version better conveys the feeling of being in the middle of the action. This is especially evident during the battle scenes, which become truly breathtaking once the directional impact of individual effects and pieces of music is considered. Additionally, the bass-heavy elements of the score, such as explosions and powerful monster noises, have far more depth and power in the English mix. Notably, this did not come at the expense of dialogue, which remained easy to understand at all times. The Japanese version, on the other hand, is fairly standard for a 2.0 track, with music, sound effects, and dialogue all mixed without surround directional separation.

The overall impression of the English 5.1 mix is very positive. It better represents the scale and power of the depicted actions while retaining the conversational nature of the source material. As for the Japanese option, it is perfectly fine and better suited for casual listening sessions but does not offer much in the way of an immersive movie-watching experience.

Solo Leveling: Season 2 Blu-ray Movie, Special Features and Extras 

Crunchyroll's standard Blu-ray release of the season includes only a few extra features, including episode previews, promotional videos, and textless openings and endings. On the other hand, the Limited Edition includes a 68-page art book with Japanese interviews and a "Shadow's Daily Life" comic, four art cards, and a sticker sheet. This means that for the standard release, the value of the included bonus materials is rather low. The extra features include promotional material and episode previews, which is a very bare minimum for a Blu-ray release.

On the other hand, the Limited Edition is much more worthwhile, as the inclusion of the art book makes it far more valuable. The book features interviews with the Japanese staff and cast, which provides insight into the production process, and an additional comic, which is always a welcome addition. Moreover, the production quality of the book suggests that it was created with care, so collectors might want to purchase it for the exclusive content.

The Packaging:

Crunchyroll releases the season on standard and Limited Edition Blu-ray. The latter comes with the art book, art cards, and a sticker sheet, while the standard only includes the show. The Limited Edition includes two Blu-ray discs and two DVD discs.

The packaging of the Limited Edition is very nice, as it features all the additional materials that come with the release. On the other hand, the inclusion of DVDs is surprising, as physical media sales are no longer common in the anime distribution sphere. The standard edition is a bare minimum, as the packaging does not include any additional materials besides the show. The Limited Edition is the recommended purchase, as it offers a more substantial product that feels more valuable.

Solo Leveling: Season 2 Blu-ray Movie, Overall Score and Recommendation 

Solo Leveling: Season 2 Arise From The Shadow is a worthy sequel that largely follows the same blueprint as the first season. Once again, Jinwoo is an underdog hunter in a world where he is not supposed to belong, but that changes with the mysterious System that grants him incredible power. This season is better than the first one in almost every way, including stronger enemies, more impressive displays of power, larger- scale battles, and some of the most exciting action animation. Jinwoo grows stronger, his intimidating power on full display for the viewers, and the show rarely misses an opportunity to demonstrate it.

Crunchyroll's Blu-ray edition of the season is very strong, with an excellent 1080p video and outstanding lossless audio. The lack of 4K options is the only reason why the presentation is not perfect, but the video and audio quality are both fantastic. Additionally, the Limited Edition features a nice art book and other collectible materials. Recommended.
