Rogue One: A Star Wars Story Blu-ray Movie Review

Reviewed by Martin Liebman April 4, 2017

As with last year's multiple releases of 'The Force Awakens,' we're reviewing the various store exclusive versions of 'Rogue One.' This year brings much the same from the various retailers -- Best Buy, Target, Wal-Mart, and Disney -- but with 'Rogue One' a 3D version of the film is available out-of-the-gate, and exclusively, to two of the four retailers: Best Buy and Target. Disney and Wal-Mart don't offer the 3D disc and release the film in versions very similar to last year's 'TFA' releases..

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story Blu-ray Movie, Special Features and Extras  3.0 of 5

The Disney store exclusive release of Rogue One is, fundamentally, a regurgitation of last year's The Force Awakens set that includes a standard-issue copy of the film on Blu-ray but includes a handsome collection of lithographs. Collectors will be happy to know that the lithographs, and the envelope that houses them, are of identical dimensions to last year's TFA set. There are a couple of minor differences, however. While the core products -- folder and lithographs -- maintain the same size, the Rogue One set lacks the embossed front lettering found on the TFA set. The new collection is also housed in a simple fold-open folder whereas last year's set opened from the rear by way of two overlapping panels, one of which was cut-out and colored to resemble BB-8. There are no such additional fun touches this time.

The front of the folder is essentially a carryover of the artwork found on the Blu-ray. The rear panel only offers an image of a sky, ominously cloudy on the left, brighter on the right. Inside is a sprawling image from Scarif, featuring Stormtroopers wading through shallow water. A couple of Walkers appear in the distance, and in the sky is a lone X-Wing fighter on the left, a new U-Wing on the right, and many Tie-Fighters in the middle. A Star Destroyer ominously hovers at the top. The four included lithographs feature Chirrut Îmwe and Baze Malbus on Scarif, Cassian Andor and K-2SO planning a mission, Darth vader emerging from the smoke to speak with Orson Krennic, and Jyn Erso dressed in a stolen Imperial uniform prior to entering the Scarif facility (both Cassian and Baze can be seen in the background). Each lithograph contains a Disney store stamp on the bottom left and small copyright and trademark "Lucasfilm" lettering on the bottom right.

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story Blu-ray Movie, Overall Score and Recommendation  4.5 of 5

As with last year, this might be the most unassuming of the extra Star Wars releases, but for artwork collectors it's quite an attractive package. It's unfortunate that Disney couldn't include the 3D version rather than simply a vanilla wide release disc alongside, but for those who don't mind missing out on 3D and would enjoy framing and displaying these images, this is certainly a viable option to consider. Recommended to Star Wars collectors.
