As with last year's multiple releases of 'The Force Awakens,' we're reviewing the various store exclusive versions of 'Rogue One.' This year brings much the same from the various retailers -- Best Buy, Target, Disney, and Wal-Mart -- but with 'Rogue One' a 3D version of the film is available out-of-the-gate, and exclusively, to two of the four retailers: Best Buy and Target. Disney and Wal-Mart don't offer the 3D disc and release the film in versions very similar to last year's 'TFA' releases..

Wal-Mart's Rogue One exclusive is essentially the same as last year's TFA store exclusive. It's the choice for slipcover aficionados and features another fold-out image of a droid, this time K-2SO. As with last year's featuring BB-8, the cut-out image, which adheres to the rest of the slipcase by way of a small velcro tab, can fold open and looks great on a shelf. Granted it masks whatever is behind it, but the effect is very cool. One notable difference is that Rogue One features lettering on the fold-open part of the slip, whereas last year's did not. The slip is sturdy and, along the inside with K-2SO opened, features the film's key Rebel protagonists along the watery shores of Scarif, ready for battle with the Empire, explosions behind them, X-Wings flying through the sky, and the Death Star looming on the horizon. The slipcover, and the Blu-ray inside, is otherwise unremarkable. The back panel and slipcover sides are identical to the wide release, as is the Blu-ray package inside. The lone exception is that, exclusively in the Wal-Mart Blu-ray case, buyers will find a package with a pair of "Galactic Connexions" hexagonal discs. I can't say if everyone gets the same ones, but mine came with K-2SO and "Death Trooper." They're packaged with a sample Topps trading card advertising Rogue One's Series 2 set.
This one's only distinguishing features are the slipcover and the discs, but it's an awesome slipcover. It's not quite as cool and colorful as last year's BB-8, but it's a great companion piece and looks amazing on the shelf, a real standout with the flap open at a 90 degree angle. Slipcover fans are going to want to nab this one while they can.
