Project Hail Mary 4K Blu-ray Movie Review

It's not uncommon to be dazzled and delighted by the movies, but it's becoming a bit less common in the contemporary movie space. That's a shame, but it also makes it feel extra-special when a movie really just blows your socks off, which is the feeling I experienced with Project Hail Mary, the latest feature from Directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, the duo that directed one of the other movies of the past couple of decades that blew my socks off, The LEGO Movie (yes, really!). The film, based on the novel by Andy Weir (who also wrote the source novel that inspired The Martian, another "blew my socks off" film of more recent vintage), looks at interstellar friendship through the lens of two disparate but also relatable creatures coming together to save their worlds from imminent destruction and to save themselves from both the mental taxations of stress and isolation and the very real danger that neither will ever return to their home worlds again.

Earth is in trouble. Big trouble. Like, ELE-level trouble. It seems like there's a substance that scientists are calling "astrophage" which is stretching from the sun to Venus and causing the sun to dim, which will lead to global cooling, which will lead to the end of all life on the planet within just a few decades. But, where there's a will, there's a way. Earth's best scientific minds come up with a radical plan to send a small team on a one-way trip to the Tau Ceti star system to find a solution. The catch is that there is only enough fuel to get the astronauts there, but even a one-way ticket for a few brave souls is deemed a worthwhile sacrifice if it means saving the entire planet Earth. The team, which includes a brainy middle school teacher named Ryland Grace (Ryan Gosling), boards the Hail Mary in hopes of reaching the star system and making a breakthrough discovery which could save the planet.

But things don't go as planned. Grace awakens to find himself on a ship with two dead crew mates, and he can't remember who he is, why he's there, or how anything on the ship works, all the while the fate of the world is in his hands. But just as he's getting his bearings and beginning his work, an alien spaceship docks with the Hail Mary and through primitive communication Grace is able to get to know -- and eventually befriend and communicate with -- its lone occupant, an extraterrestrial being he calls "Rocky" (puppet work by James Ortiz) who is, like Grace, the sole survivor of a mission from his home world, Erid, which is also under threat from astrophage. The two come together under a shared banner of commonality of mission and, eventually, friendship, hoping to solve the mystery before their worlds are destroyed.

Friendships built across various borders -- social, political, religious, and the like -- are certainly not new to movies, and interstellar relationships aren't exactly new, either (thinking of movies like the fantastic Enemy Mine and disregarding more sprawling films and franchises where interstellar and interspecies relationships are taken for granted, like Han and Chewy in Star Wars). But I am hard-pressed to think of any movie where such a divergent relationship is built with such care a believability as it is here. Grace and Rocky come together with remarkable depth to the relationship through a number of seamlessly integrated uniting factors: shared challenges and dangers in the mission that brought them together, the shared experiences that sets a foundation for their meeting, the world-saving tasks that drive them, the technology that facilitates their bonding, and the love that ultimately glues them together. Never mind the interspecies interplay; this is intergalactic ineterplay, and this is interspecies and intergalactic interplay done through the magic of modern movie magic that makes it as seamless as possible. Gosling is remarkable playing against Rocky, the rock-like alien that is practical and puppet rather than soulless digital, which comes alive with a remarkable sense of being and personality despite the lack of any tangible, relatable human qualities to give it emotional expressiveness. This is the true wonder of the movie, and frankly for as good as everything is -- Gosling, the directors, the score, the set pieces, the story itself -- it's James Ortiz's puppetry that steals the show and makes Rocky its unquestionable star.

Of course, the characters wouldn't matter much in a dull story, and the tale in Project Hail Mary is anything but. This is a compelling film that makes its science relatable, its mission tangible, and its processes believable. It manages to feel far flung yet very possible at the same time. That's the beauty of Weir's stories: an ability to make science grounded and tangible but at the same time spectacular and mind blowing. That was the love language of The Martian, and that is the love language here. Miller and Lord, along with Writer Drew Goddard (who also penned the screenplay for The Martian) manage to keep the film on task and rolling and the story compelling, even when the little nuances and details of the budding Grace-Rocky relationship threatens to completely steal the show. There's just enough drama and quite a few tricks up the movie's sleeve to keep the story moving forward, including a couple of excellent, twisty plot points that redefine the entire experience. Add in a terrific score from Daniel Pemberton (Masters of the Universe) and first rate production design and VFX, and Project Hail Mary stands as one of 2026's best offerings.

Alliance has a touchdown on its hands with this UHD release of Project Hail Mary. The 2160p/Dolby Vision UHD presentation hovers in the realm of flawless, featuring a pristine presentation that allows audiences to discover all of the main surfaces as well as all the nooks and crannies on the ships, on Rocky's rocky body, Grace's face, and so on. Everything is presented with outstanding clarity and perfect attention to detail. There is no source noise or encode flubs standing in the way of a healthy and crisp image worthy of the 4K resolution and the UHD name. Likewise, the Dolby Vision palette delivers an exceptional viewing experience. Colors are perfectly balanced and well saturated, yielding striking authenticity to everything from Rocky Brown to Eva's red hair. Colorful attire is a standout. Space blacks are superb and white balance is excellent. Skin tones appear healthy and natural. This is a first-class image from Alliance.

Project Hail Mary features a precise Dolby Atmos soundtrack. The track is not one that is packed with aggressive sound, though certainly there are moments when higher yield elements burst through the speakers with power and balance. I enjoyed the subtle atmosphere and the smaller, but not unimportant, audio cues that really give life and body to the track. It's the attention to detail and exacting nature of every sound's definition and placement that really bring this one to vivid sonic life. Stage balance is excellent, definition to all components is first-rate, and surround usage is hearty but well balanced, whether talking score, popular music, environmental details, or those bursts of more prominent sounds throughout. The Atmos channels don't want for usage, but they are used more in support ways rather than in prominent ways. Dialogue is clear, centered, and lifelike for the duration.

This UHD release of Project Hail Mary contains a trio of supplements, headlined by an audio commentary track. No DVD or digital copies are included, but Alliance does ship the disc with a non-embossed slipcover.

• Audio Commentary: Directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller break down the film with narrative and technical depth, matched by an agreeable demeanor.
• Deleted Scenes (1080p, 9:58 total runtime): Included are Day 1 Food Paste; I Think I'm Handling Things Pretty Awesome; How to Put on a Spacesuit; You Sleep, I Watch; and Maybe We're Cousins.
• Earth's Favorite Eridian (1080p, 7:53): This piece looks at Rocky's origins and description in the source novel, remaining faithful to the character in the film, and bringing him to life.

Project Hail Mary 4K Blu-ray Movie, Overall Score and Recommendation 

I have yet to read Weir's source novel, but I recently picked up the ebook on sale. It's loaded onto my Nook and high on my soon-to-read list. But the film adaptation is also high on my "rewatch me fast!" list. This is magnificent stuff; the story translates very well to the screen, Gosling is exceptional in the lead, the emotional currents are perfect, the visuals and music are first-rate, and Lord and Miller's direction is flawless. This is one of the best films of the 2020s. Alliance's Blu-ray is also excellent. The extras are good and the picture and sound qualities are very strong. Very highly recommended!
