Overview

Pinocchio (1940)

Lonely woodcarver Geppetto longs for a child, and his wish is partially granted when the Blue Fairy brings his wooden marionette Pinocchio to life. In order to become a real boy, Pinocchio must prove himself worthy. He sets out into the world, accompanied by his "conscience," Jiminy Cricket. Pinocchio is led astray by the wicked fox J. Worthington Fowlfellow, first to "a life in the theater"- Stromboli's puppet show - and then to Pleasure Island, where boys behave like (and become!) jackasses. Pinocchio redeems himself by saving Geppetto from Monstro, the whale.

Pinocchio Blu-ray Movie Review

Reviewed by Martin Liebman January 20, 2017

Disney has re-released the classic animated film 'Pinocchio' to Blu-ray as part of the studio's 'Signature Collection' of releases, following 'Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs' and 'Beauty and the Beast.' This release adds a few new supplements and, for the first time, a Disney digital copy of the film. Video and audio presentations remain unchanged from the previous release.

Pinocchio Blu-ray Movie, Special Features and Extras  5.0 of 5

Disney's Signature Collection Blu-ray release of Pinocchio offers several new supplemental features and carries over many of the extras from the previous release, including the excellent commentary track with Eric Goldberg, Leonard Maltin, and J.B. Kaufman. All disc-based supplements are also included with the digital copy of the film. The release also boasts a new menu with easy navigation and snazzy background artwork. Under the "Play" tab, viewers will find the option to simply play the film or view it with the karaoke-style Sing-Along version that places lyric text on screen, and DisneyView which simple replaces the black bars with Toby Bluth artwork. Note that the following supplements were available on the previous release but are missing on this edition: BD-Live functionality, the Deleted Song "Honest John," Optional Border Fills, Pinocchio's Matter of Facts, 'Pinocchio' Art Galleries, Exclusive 'Pinocchio Knows' Trivia Challenge, Pleasure Island Carnival Games, and Pinocchio's Puzzles. Also of note is that this Blu-ray release comes complete with a Disney digital copy code and a DVD version of the film. This 'Signature Collection' release marks Pinocchio's first appearance on digital HD. Below is a categorized breakdown of what's included on this release.

Supplemental content new to this release.

  • The Pinocchio Project: When You Wish Upon A Star: A two-part supplement.
    • The Project (1080p, 3:03): A short making-of featurette for the music video of the same name. It features Musicians JR Aquino, Tanner Patrick, and Alex G and Music Producer Philippe Saisse.
    • The Video (1080p, 2:49): An updated music video version of Wish Upon A Star featuring JR Aquino, Tanner Patrick, and Alex G. The video intersperses scenes from the film, studio shots, and traditional music video elements.
  • Walt's Story Meetings: Pleasure Island (1080p, 7:14): Sourced from the transcripts in the Disney vaults, this piece is a vocalized recreation of the story meetings that took place from 1938-1939 while crafting the famous "Pleasure Island" scene. It features sketches and photographs from the design team and interviews from Director Pete Docter and Historian J.B. Kaufman.
  • In Walt's Words – Pinocchio (1080p, 4:48): Archival footage from 1956 featuring Walt Disney discussing Pinocchio, the methods used in his studio to improve his team and create the film, and the impact of World War II on the studio.
  • Oswald The Lucky Rabbit In "Poor Papa" (1080p, 5:19): A new cut of a vintage black-and-white animated short featuring Oswald.

Below are supplements that were included on the previous Blu-ray release but are not listed under the disc's "Classic Bonus Content" tab.

  • Song Selection (1080p, 10:17 total runtime): The film's song sequences with subtitled lyrics. Included are "When You Wish Upon A Star," "Little Wooden Head," "Give A Little Whistle," "Hi-Diddle-Dee-Dee," and "I've Got No Strings."
  • Audio Commentary By Leonard Maltin, Eric Goldberg, and J.B. Kaufman: A duplicate of the commentary track from the original Blu-ray release, but it does lack the previously offered picture-in-picture (Cine-Explore) option.

All of the following bonus content was available on the previously released Blu-ray edition of the film with the exception of "Storyboard to Film Comparison." It's all listed under the "Classic Bonus Content" tab. For in-depth reviews of each supplement, please click here.

  • No Strings Attached: The Making of Pinocchio (1080i, 56:09).
  • Deleted Scenes (1080p, 10:33 total runtime): Includes Introduction, The Story of The Grandfather Tree, In The Belly Of The Whale, and Alternate Ending.
  • The Sweatbox (1080p, 6:25).
  • Geppettos Then and Now (1080p, 10:57).
  • Live-Action Reference Footage (1080p, 9:57).
  • Publicity:
    • Original Theatrical Trailer (1940) (480i, 1:52).
    • Theatrical Trailer (1984) (480i, 1:25).
    • Theatrical Trailer (1992) (480i, 1:33).
  • When You Wish Upon A Star Music Video by Meaghan Jette Martin (1080p, 3:14): Complete with poor lip sync.
  • A Wish Come True: The Making of Pinocchio (480i, 5:06).
  • Storyboard-To-Film Final Comparison (480i, 4:04): This supplement new to Blu-ray offers viewers both the storyboard original and the final image for selected scenes.

Pinocchio Blu-ray Movie, Overall Score and Recommendation  4.5 of 5

Disney's Signature Collection Blu-ray release of Pinocchio is very well done: more streamlined than the previous release, attractively packaged, and priced to own. Video and audio qualities are identical to the last release -- and they're great -- and the addition of several new supplements makes this a fine overall package. Recommended to Disney completionists and to those that picked up the old release but would like the digital copy. The added supplements by themselves are fine but aren't worth the full price of admission. It's obviously a must-buy for those that don't yet own the film on Blu-ray.
