Peter Pan Blu-ray Movie Review

Sign up for this release...if you don't own the Diamond Edition.

Reviewed by Martin Liebman June 1, 2018

Walt Disney's classic 1953 animated feature film 'Peter Pan' has been re-released to Blu-ray as part of the 'Signature Collection,' new editions bearing Walt Disney's signature and featuring new bonus content not previously available on Blu-ray (while also removing some extras or transitioning them to digital, the latter of which is thankfully not the case here). This is the seventh release in the 'Signature' line, following 'Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs,' 'Beauty and the Beast,' 'Pinocchio,' 'Bambi,' 'The Lion King,' and 'Lady and the Tramp.' Read on for more on what is and what is not included.

I spy...a great Blu-ray!

Peter Pan Blu-ray Movie, Video Quality  4.5 of 5

This is the first of the "Signature Collection" releases for which I do not own the original Diamond Edition Blu-ray release with which to conduct a direct video quality comparison. However, Peter Pan appears to follow precedent by simply porting over the same 1080p video transfer that was used for the 2013 Diamond Edition disc, as have all of the previous Signature releases. Peter Pan Blu-ray Movie, Audio Quality  4.5 of 5

This "Signature Collection" Blu-ray release of Peter Pan appears to carry over the same DTS-HD Master Audio 7.1 lossless soundtrack from the previous Diamond Edition release. For a full audio review, please click here.

Peter Pan Blu-ray Movie, Special Features and Extras  4.5 of 5

This Signature Collection release of Peter Pan contains a mix of old and new supplements. The following extras are missing: Introduction by Diane Disney-Miller, Disney Intermission, and Sneak Peeks. Below is a breakdown of what's included. There are three ways to view the movie: Original (which is the just the movie with standard black bars on the sides), Sing Along With the Movie (karaoke-type song lyrics on the screen), and Play Movie With Disney View (black bars are replaced with artwork by Christy Maltese, Disney Background Artist). There are no digital exclusive extras, and none of them have been removed from the digital format, either. A DVD copy of the film and a Movies Anywhere digital copy code are included with purchase.

New Supplements:

  • Stories from Walt's Office: Walt & Flight (1080p, 4:13): Director of Walt Disney Archives Rebecca Cline and Walt Disney Archivist Edward Ovalle discuss Walt Disney's fascination with flight and airplanes. The piece includes archival footage of Walt Disney, photos of his planes, and images of his office and model planes.
  • A Darling Conversation with Wendy & John: Kathryn Beaumont and Paul Collins (1080p, 8:16): Beaumont and Collins discuss working with Walt Disney and working on Peter Pan: the live action poses that inspired Disney artists to sketch the characters and what they learned about making films while working with Disney. The supplements also includes vintage footage of the live action scenes used to guide the animators as they crafted the film's preliminary storyboards and designs.
  • "You Can Fly"-Oke (1080p, 2:11): A Sing-Along version of the song.
  • "Never Smile at a Crocodile"-Oke (1080p, 1:48): Sing-Along version: "A visually reimagined version of the deleted song sung by Henry Calvin."

Returning Supplements. Please click here for full reviews:

  • Deleted Songs: "The Pirate's Song," "Never Smile at a Crocodile," and "The Boatswain Song."
  • Deleted Scenes: "The Journey Home" and "Alternate Arrival."
  • You Can Fly: The Making of Peter Pan
  • Tinker Bell: A Fairy's Tale
  • The Peter Pan That Almost Was
  • The Peter Pan Story
  • Growing Up With Nine Old Men
  • Audio Commentary
  • "Never Land": The Lost Song
  • In Walt's Words: "Why I Made Peter Pan"
  • Music Video: "Never Land" Performed by Paige O'Hara.
  • Music Video: "The Second Star To The Right" Performed by T-Squad.
  • Song Selection: Includes Sing-Along Versions of "The Second Star To The Right," "You Can Fly," "A Pirate's Life", "Following The Leader," and "Your Mother And Mine."

Peter Pan Blu-ray Movie, Overall Score and Recommendation  4.5 of 5

Peter Pan is a treasure of a film and a joy of a Blu-ray. This "Signature Collection" release carries over most of the previously released bonus content and adds several new supplements. The A/V presentations appear unchanged. As with most of the other Signature Collection releases, this one's not really worth the double dip unless one is a serious Disney collector or wants that desirable Movies Anywhere digital copy (or the slipcover), but for those who missed out on it the first time (as I did), it's a must-own.
