Alice in Wonderland 4K Blu-ray Movie Review

Reviewed by Jeffrey Kauffman May 5, 2026

Ask any Baby Boomer or earlier generation about Disney's Alice in Wonderland, and you're likely to get the film currently under discussion cited. Ask Gen X or later, and chances are you might get Alice in Wonderland instead, but for those of any age who have a soft spot for this 1951 animated effort, Disney is providing a beautifully polished new 4K UHD version which among other attributes finally corrects a longstanding issue with the aspect ratio on previous 1080 releases.

Does anyone need a plot recap for Alice in Wonderland? If so, Ken Brown's Alice in Wonderland Blu-ray review of Disney first 1080 release of the film provides one, along with a list of supplements and Ken's reaction to the technical presentation.

Alice in Wonderland 4K Blu-ray Movie, Video Quality  4.5 of 5

Note: While I typically try to stay away from screenshots taken directly off of 4K discs due to the necessity to downscale them to 1080 and SDR, this release finally corrects the aspect ratio on the 4K UHD disc to 1.37:1 (previous 1080 releases were in 1.32:1). I'm still offering screenshots from the legacy 1080 release included in this package in positions 1 through 5, as the palette in particular looks so much more accurate, but I've also included two screenshots in positions 6 and 7 directly from the 4K disc so that those interested can see the subtle but interesting change in aspect ratio. As alluded to above, color space in the 4K screenshots is not accurate. Ken gave top marks to the old 1080 presentation, though I've docked a half point in my score due to its longstanding but now finally fixed issue with the aspect ratio.

Alice in Wonderland is presented in 4K UHD courtesy of Disney / Buena Vista with an HEVC / H.265 encoded 2160p transfer in 1.37:1. I've mentioned in other reviews of vintage Disney properties getting restored in 4K how the accompanying press sheets have tended not to offer a ton of information, something that I deemed strange since Disney obviously typically puts a lot of effort into these restorations. This latest release is a welcome exception, however, and the press sheet, while a little flowery in that great PR tradition, does offer some salient information, as follows:

In celebration of its 75th anniversary, Alice in Wonderland has been meticulously restored and remastered in 4K Ultra HD by the Walt Disney Film Restoration team. Over nine months, artists completed a digital scan of the original nitrate Successive Exposure (SE) neegatives, followed by extensive clean up to address dust, warping, and age related wear. The tam also referenced original production artwork preserved by the Walt Disney Animation Research Library to ensure the restoration remained true to the filmmakers' original intent, collaborating closely with Walt Disney Animation Studios veteran Michael Giaimo to review every shot and refine color and luminance.
If the long past due correction to 1.37:1 will be especially applauded by "purists" (and there is a bit of additional information on both sides of the frame now, as can be seen by comparing the similar frames from some of my 1080 screenshots with the two screenshots from the 4K disc), my hunch is it's going to be the almost (appropriately, given Go Ask Alice and all) mind blowing palette that will be the best (sorry, pun incoming) aspect to this release for many. While the HDR / Dolby Vision grades add some new tonal highlights pretty much from the get go in admittedly little things like the kind of rust brown fur on Dinah, it's arguably in Alice's trip down the rabbit hole where the absolutely gorgeous variations in tones is immediately noticeable. Lighting and overall color timings in this sequence are appropriately "trippy", and the HDR grades show immaculate segues that are a real delight. While the entire palette bursts with color, the HDR grades struck me as providing reds in particular with greater variations in this new presentation. Some reds now are a bit more brownish, as in the rabbit's waistcoat, or the apparel of Tweedledum and Tweedledee, but other reds, like those sumptious roses (the actual red ones, not the ones that are painted later), are eye poppingly vivid and what I'd call "true" red. The overall look her struck me as generally a bit darker than the old 1080 presentation, but perhaps the added luster HDR offsets that. Grain is tightly resolved throughout.

Alice in Wonderland 4K Blu-ray Movie, Audio Quality  4.0 of 5

Alice in Wonderland gets the same DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 codec that was on the old 1080 release, and some may have wished for a lossless presentation of the original mono mix, but for a rejiggered surround track this has some nice spaciousness as outlined in Ken's review, but thankfully without any of the quasi-phased sound that can accompany such efforts at times. The film's score is one of its undeniable assets, and all of the gorgeous choral arrangements sound particularly burnished. Sound effects can be discretely channeled throughout. Dialogue is rendered cleanly and clearly. Optional subtitles in several languages are available.

Alice in Wonderland 4K Blu-ray Movie, Special Features and Extras  4.0 of 5

The 4K disc in this package has no supplemental content. The legacy 1080 disc has all of the supplements Ken details in the review linked to above, albeit organized in categories (I suspect this 1080 disc may be the 65th Anniversary edition). A digital copy is also included, and packaging features a slipcover.

Alice in Wonderland 4K Blu-ray Movie, Overall Score and Recommendation  4.5 of 5

As probably indicated by my score for the film, I'm a big fan of this at times weirdly underappreciated Disney production. This new 4K UHD presentation boasts beautiful video, and while some may have wished for a lossless mono audio option, the 5.1 track sounds spry for its age. Legacy supplements on the 1080 disc in this package are hugely enjoyable. Highly recommended.
