Peter Grill and the Philosopher's Time: Super Extra - Complete Collection (2022)

The heat is on again for Peter Grill as the world's most powerful warrior finds himself in the crosshairs of the lusty ladies who seek a penetrating infusion of his potent DNA to create the perfect offspring. Why can't they accept that he just wants to marry his fiancé and concentrate on being a hero and fighting goblins and stuff? Oh wait, they probably do it because, despite his sister's desperate efforts to keep him from wandering astray, this is one Peter who keeps ending up in the wrong… er… place at the wrong time. So, you really can't blame the girls for trying when they've got a proven working strategy.

Peter Grill and the Philosopher's Time: Super Extra - Complete Collection Blu-ray Movie Review

Reviewed by Neil Lumbard April 20, 2024

Peter Grill and the Philosopher’s Time - Super Extra is the second season of the anime. Originally broadcast on Tokyo MX, Peter Grill and the Philosopher’s Time - Super Extra was licensed to Sentai Filmworks for release in North America. The Blu-ray release provides the fully uncensored version of the series (as a separate edited-for-television version was also created). The uncensored version contains a more explicit version of the series with more graphic content.

Produced by Hiroshi Nishiyama (Peter Grill and the Philosopher's Time), Honoka Ozaki (Protocol: Rain), Masanori Ishii (The Fruit of Evolution: Before I Knew It, My Life Had It Made), Shinji Ōmori (The Demon Sword Master of Excalibur Academy), Sumire Ito (I'm Standing on 1,000,000 Lives), Katsumi Asai, and Yuiko Ōtomo (Seirei Gensouki - Spirit Chronicles), Peter Grill and the Philosopher’s Time - Super Extra is based on the original manga by Daisuke Hiyama. The manga featured original character designs by Koh Kawarajima. The theme song music for the anime adaptation is performed by Isekaijoucho (opening) and Hilcrhyme (ending).

Peter Grill (Hiro Shimono) is back in action! Are Peter’s bed sheets ready for some action? The action hero has returned for more exciting adventures as the brave warrior – with plenty of action behind the scenes, too.

Things are much the same for Peter as he finds himself continuing to be pursued by an onslaught of beautiful women all lusting for his unique DNA. These ladies want nothing more than to have some of Peter’s DNA for their own offspring. These sexy women won’t stop at pursing Peter until he’s in bed with them!

Yet Peter still wishes to eventually marry his close fiancé and doesn’t want to be pursued by so many different women. Peter is also plenty busy with fighting goblins. Can Peter fight off goblins and sexy ladies before marrying his fiancé or will he accidentally trip into bed?

The characters are quite obnoxious at times and the series could do much better – the second season just makes things more grating and more annoying. The characters feel cookie-cutter anyway. These characters certainly aren’t well developed (from a plotline standpoint, anyway).

The animation on Peter Grill and the Philosopher’s Time - Super Extra is decent for the second season. The series features art direction by Kenichi Kurata (Blade Dance of the Elementalers, High School DxD BorN) and chief animation direction by Tatsumi. The animation style isn’t the most unique or creative style around. The art could be significantly better overall. Even so, the animation isn’t as sub-par as it could be for this type of production.

The score composed by shusei (Ojisan to Marshmallow, Peter Grill and the Philosopher's Time) isn’t much to write home about. The music fails to make that big of an impression in the second season. Altogether bland and unoriginal, the score doesn’t stand out in any meaningful way. A bland and uninteresting score for the series. It merely stands as a backdrop to the sex-romp action.

The cinematography by Kazuto Horikawa (Adventurers Who Don't Believe in Humanity Will Save the World, My Wife is the Student Council President) is sleek and modern looking. The cinematography capably showcases the series aesthetic and the sexual hijinks of Peter Grill and the Philosopher’s Time - Super Extra. The visuals don’t make much of an impression, overall – but the cinematography is still effective for what it is.

Written by Nora Mori (Adults Dunno How to Love!, Peter Grill and the Philosopher's Time), Peter Grill and the Philosopher’s Time - Super Extra continues to be an over-the-top mess of action and sex joke hijinks. The characters are cookie-cutter and there isn’t much to care about. The writing is sub-par. It simply doesn’t manage to provide much in the way of interesting characters or situations.

Directed by Tatsumi (Peter Grill and the Philosopher's Time), Peter Grill and the Philosopher’s Time - Super Extra is all about the sexy comedy and the over-the-top antics of the characters. The director understands that nothing about the series is too serious – nor is it meant to be taken too seriously. Everything is goofy and ridiculous. Even so, Peter Grill and the Philosopher’s Time - Super Extra is underwhelming. It is not too entertaining and it is more of the same-old sex-comedy jokes that fundamentally bore and the director can’t seem to make things more interesting.

Peter Grill and the Philosopher's Time: Super Extra - Complete Collection Blu-ray Movie, Video Quality  4.5 of 5

Released on Blu-ray by Sentai Filmworks, Peter Grill and the Philosopher's Time - Super Extra is presented in 1080p MPEG-4 AVC encoded high-definition in the original television broadcast aspect ratio of 1.78:1 widescreen. The original broadcast was aired in either a censored or uncensored version. Sentai Filmworks provides the fully uncensored version for the home media release. The release has not been edited from its original version. As a result, audiences can expect to find sexier mayhem in the presentation.

The presentation is impressive and there are a lot of good qualities to the encode. The presentation features bright and colorful animation – well-reproducing the art style of the animators. This is a decidedly vibrant encoding and it capably handles showcasing the animation. The sleek looking cinematography is well reproduced on the release.

The Blu-ray benefits from the advantage of the format. The format provides audiences with a superior viewing option compared to streaming video services. Streaming services provide video with lower quality bit-rates and more compression. For enthusiasts who want to eek out the absolute best presentation possible, Blu-ray provides better encoding and less compression compared to any streaming services.

Peter Grill and the Philosopher's Time: Super Extra - Complete Collection Blu-ray Movie, Audio Quality  4.5 of 5

The release includes a selection of lossless audio options: English DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0 and Japanese DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0 (with English subtitles). The sound direction by Nobuyuki Abe (Banished from the Hero's Party, Grandpa and Grandma Turn Young Again) is well preserved on the release. The lossless audio sounds crisp and clear and manages to highlight the series dialogue and score. The audio presentation isn't the most involving – it could have benefited from gaining some channel separation in the form of a 5.1 surround sound mix, but it suffices.

The release benefits from having lossless audio encoding. The Blu-ray disc format continues to be superior to any streaming video platform. Streaming video services only provide audio with lossy (non-lossless) audio quality. For audio enthusiasts seeking the absolute best possible sound quality, physical media is superior and offers more advantages.
