A must-see documentary exploring the lives of gay black men living with AIDS.

Reviewed by Neil Lumbard September 20, 2021

Non, Je Ne Regrette Rien (No Regret) is an essential film: the documentary stars Michael Lee, Joseph Long, Assoto Saint, Donald Woods, and Reggie Williams. Executive produced by Jonathan Lee, Non, Je Ne Regrette Rien (No Regret) focuses on AIDS and the lives of men living with the disease. Another worthwhile documentary by director Marlon Riggs (Ethnic Notions, Color Adjustment).

The documentary explores the lives and struggles of 5 gay black men diagnosed with HIV. The film explores how these gay men struggle with living with aids. The individuals highlighted in the film all discuss their personal struggles. The illness is the topic – but the personal journeys of these men is at the forefront as well.

Voices that need to be heard.

The production features excellent cinematography by Robert Shepard (No Dreams Deferred, Eyes on the Prize). Non, Je Ne Regrette Rien (No Regret) which highlights these gay men with a sense of compassionate filmmaking. The editing by Nicole Atkinson helps ensure every voice is heard.

Written and directed by Marlon Riggs, Non, Je Ne Regrette Rien (No Regret) has interesting creative elements. The blue backdrop symbolizing AIDS is well-interwoven in to the production. (Viewers may also wish to see Derek Jarman's masterpiece Blue – reviewed here). The film is a compelling exploration of a difficult subject. Riggs' provides compassion to these men and their struggles.

Non, Je Ne Regrette Rien (No Regret) Blu-ray Movie, Video Quality  3.0 of 5

Arriving on Blu-ray from the Criterion Collection, Non, Je Ne Regrette Rien (No Regret) is presented in the original aspect ratio of 1.33:1 full frame. The release comes from a new high definition digital master. Though the release has a new digital source, the footage is obviously from standard definition footage. The limited quality of the source footage makes the presentation a modest one. Though the film may never look as crisp or dynamic as a modern documentary film, Non, Je Ne Regrette Rien (No Regret) still manages to shine nicely with fewer compression artifacts in the Criterion presentation.

Non, Je Ne Regrette Rien (No Regret) Blu-ray Movie, Audio Quality  3.0 of 5

The release is presented in uncompressed PCM stereo. The lossless audio is presented in 24 bit depth. The high-resolution audio encoding sounds good throughout the feature-film. Dialogue is clear and easy to understand. Though the dynamic range is modest and sounds limited compared to modern documentaries, Non, Je Ne Regrette Rien (No Regret) still sounds as good as one might expect given the production time- frame.
