My Life as Inukai-san's Dog: Complete Collection Blu-ray Movie Review

Reviewed by Neil Lumbard March 16, 2024

My Life as Inukai-san’s Dog is a sex comedy with animal instincts. Woof woof! Created by Gosei Furukawa, My Life as Inukai-san’s Dog explores love between a woman and a dog. Executive produced by Atsushi Ariyoshi, Gō Nakanishi (I'm in Love with the Villainess, Tomodachi Game), and Shin Furukawa (The Iceblade Sorcerer Shall Rule the World, The Masterful Cat Is Depressed Again Today), My Life as Inukai-san’s Dog is aimed at a niche audience.

Produced by Akira Yonezawa (Vinland Saga, Blue Period), Fumihiro Ozawa (Ascendance of a Bookworm, The Demon Sword Master of Excalibur Academy), Hisataka Kusumoto, Naoto Awano, Takahiro Fujii (Skull-face Bookseller Honda-san, By the Grace of the Gods), and Yuito Hirahara (Teasing Master Takagi- san, The Apothecary Diaries), My Life as Inukai-san’s Dog is quite different from some sex comedies and carves out a unique niche aimed at a sub-set of anime fans looking for something different. The anime series features the voices of Saya Aizawa and Shūichirō Umeda. Co-starring Mayu Sagara as Mike Nekotani and Yurie Kozakai as Usagi Tsukishiro.

Karen Inukai (Saya Aizawa) is a bosom and attractive lady with a lot of time on her hands. Karen finds herself in an odd situation – one she never expected to find herself in! Pochita (Shūichirō Umeda) is transformed from an ordinary high schooler into a male dog (in the Akita Inu breed).

While some swinging romance might have been no big deal in human form, now that Pochita’s a dog things become increasingly wild! The little doggie finds himself in increasingly scandalous positions. Underneath the underwear, beside her feet, and lapping kisses all over her face.

It wouldn’t be so confusing if it wasn’t for the fact Pochita’s really a human boy! Sensations and feelings never before experienced come to light for Karen as she begins to learn more about doggie anatomy than she ever before expected to find! Can a lady get along as more than just friends with a doggie?

The animation is slightly below-average. There is not much to write home about with the animation quality. It is decent in some respects but also looks low-budget in other regards. The animation is lackluster compared to many other anime series. The animation production is by Quad (Protocol: Rain, Miss Kuroitsu From the Monster Development Department). The animators provide average animation here and it simply doesn’t make much of an impression.

The quality is comparable to other low-budget erotic anime series. The quality doesn’t match that of higher-budget productions. This is something that audiences shouldn’t be that surprised by given the content of the series and the genre. The art style is simply mediocre and doesn’t make much of an impression at all. The line art and background art often seem like to be going through the motions.

As a result, the art direction by Takuji Jizōmoto (Flower Witch Mary Bell, Trinity Seven: Eternal Library & Alchemic Girl) simply feels by the numbers overall. So does the chief animation direction of Kazuaki Morita (Carnival Phantasm, Assassination Classroom) and Kazuya Morimae (Hybrid x Heart Magias Academy Ataraxia, Gonna be the Twin-Tail!! ) and nothing seems to make it excel in a more meaningful way. The effort simply doesn’t hit all the right notes.

The score composed by Tatsuya Kikuchi (Hidamari Sketch × Hoshimittsu, Tamayura - More Aggressive) doesn’t make much of an impression. The score simply feels like average background music to the production. There isn’t much going on in the score and it is only serviceable – trying to add to the foundational erotic qualities.

The character designs by Kazuaki Morita (Assassination Classroom, Classroom of the Elite) don’t make much of an impression, either. The designs seem par-the-course for something that fits the genre. A lackluster effort and not one that shows much artistry. The quality is mediocre and underwhelming.

The cinematography by Atsushi Kanō (Wandering Witch - The Journey of Elaina, Hokkaido Gals Are Super Adorable! ) seems somewhat static and unimaginative. The cinematography has a professional quality. However, it lacks the kind of creative vision of better cinematographers. The effort doesn’t excel in surprising with unique creativity.

Written by Kaneto Kamifuji, My Life as Inukai-san’s Dog is a perverted series and it will only appeal to a very limited niche audience. The emphasis on sexual encounters between a busty bosom woman and little dog make it an unusual series. The concept is mainly playing with a bestiality concept and the production is aimed predominately at those who would find that erotic and entertaining – with an element of comedy added in to the mix. Despite the added comedy, it is clearly aimed towards an audience who might be seeking bestiality anime and this is not my cup of tea – to put it lightly.

Directed by Takashi Andō (Puzzle & Dragons X, Yona of the Dawn), My Life as Inukai-san’s Dog explores some of the comedy and sexual hijinks with some kinky imagery – emphasis on the female lead as she seems to enjoy in sexual arousal of dog licking, dog barking, and doggie activities. The result is a anime series that aims at a very limited niche audience and even though it simultaneously is poking fun at the bestiality aspect of the anime it still wants to titillate audiences with the dog licking, crawling, and other human-animal sexual aspects. As such, My Life as Inukai-san’s Dog certainly won’t appeal to everyone. Yuck!

My Life as Inukai-san's Dog: Complete Collection Blu-ray Movie, Video Quality  4.0 of 5

Released on Blu-ray by Sentai Filmworks, My Life as Inukai-san's Dog is presented in 1080p MPEG-4 AVC encoded high- definition in the original television broadcast aspect ratio of 1.78:1 widescreen. The Blu-ray release provides an impressive high-definition video presentation with a quality encode. A series featuring robust color reproduction and detail. Sentai Filmworks provides quality encoding on the release. The encoding preserves the animation style and brings the best out of the animation. A presentation that showcases the quality of the Blu-ray disc format as well. Blu-ray remains the best option available for viewers seeking the absolute best presentation quality. For audiences wanting the highest bit-rate encode with the best presentation, Blu-ray provides a more immersive experience in comparison to streaming video platforms.

My Life as Inukai-san's Dog: Complete Collection Blu-ray Movie, Audio Quality  4.0 of 5

The Blu-ray release is presented in Japanese DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0 (with English subtitles). The sound direction by Kōhei Yoshida (Dark Gathering, ONIMAI: I'm Now Your Sister!) is capably reproduced. Sound staging is surprisingly decent for the stereo sound design. The soundtrack is well showcased and it plays a decent role in the sound design. The subtitles are decent as well. The release lacks an English language audio dub option. It appears that Sentai opted to not produce an English dub for the release. Therefore, the only option is the original Japanese language audio. This will not be a problem for any anime fans who prefer the original language audio. The Blu-ray disc format continues to offer the best possible audio quality. Streaming video services only offer lossy (non-lossess) audio quality while the physical media format provides a superior option for those who prefer the extra detail of lossless encoding.

My Life as Inukai-san's Dog: Complete Collection Blu-ray Movie, Special Features and Extras  1.0 of 5

The release is somewhat lackluster in the supplemental department. The release does not include any audio commentaries, behind-the-scenes with cast and crew, interviews, and other such supplements. Instead, the release only provides a small selection of standard supplements. The release doesn't include an o-card slipcover.

On disc extras include:

Clean Opening Animations (HD, 2:03)

Clean Closing Animations (HD, 9:18)

My Life as Inukai-san's Dog: Complete Collection Blu-ray Movie, Overall Score and Recommendation  2.0 of 5

My Life as Inukai-san's Dog explores the sexual kinks between a woman and a dog. The bestiality aspect certainly makes the series one for a more limited audience within a certain niche. It is certainly not for everyone. It is not my cup of tea even remotely. Even though My Life as Inukai-san's Dog tries to add comedy to the mix for the sexual elements, it is still gross and off-putting. Technical merits on the presentation are nonetheless noteworthy. The release includes only a few standard supplements.
