Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation: Season 1 Blu-ray Movie Review

Only a select few modern isekai series have created the level of hype on their debut as Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation did in 2021. The adaptation of Rifujin na Magonote’s wildly popular light novel was long awaited by fans, even before its release, and it was considered one of the most challenging undertakings due to its complex narrative. Studio Bind was formed to give the anime project the attention and care it required, and the first season delivered on all fronts, offering stunning animation and a deep dive into the protagonist’s past. It is this very strength that makes Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation one of the most interesting anime series of recent years. Rudeus Greyrat’s personality, in particular, has split critics and viewers in half. Some believe that his loathsome attitude throughout the first season hurts the viewing experience, while others found his development to be the series’ greatest strength. However, that does not change the fact that Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation is one of the most ambitious fantasy adaptations of the last decade.

The Crunchyroll release of the first season features all 23 episodes, in addition to the OVA, across four Blu-ray discs. They have been included in one physical set, as opposed to the previous separate releases for each volume. The quality of the remastering is outstanding, with the lossless soundtrack and impeccable picture quality, making this set one of the most desired fantasy titles of the year.

The premise centers on a nameless 34-year-old shut-in whose only hope of surviving is being sacrificed to save a group of random strangers from an oncoming truck. But instead of dying, the protagonist finds himself reborn as an infant named Rudeus Greyrat in another world that just so happens to also possess magic. And unlike most reincarnation tropes, Rudeus actually remembers everything that happened to him in this life. It's a strange twist to an even stranger genre, but one that Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation executes exceedingly well.  

Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation is rare in its genre by actually taking its time in telling its story. While it does eventually delve into the typical action-adventure fare of the isekai genre, Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation spends its first few episodes on the mundane aspects of Rudeus' childhood. This unusual approach to an isekai actually works, since it humanizes the protagonist in a way few other isekai shows attempt. Being able to witness Rudeus learn languages, magic, and how to make friends while overcoming his trauma is a deeply satisfying experience.

Most of the show's early episodes focus on Rudeus' relationships with his parents, Paul and Zenith, as well as Sylphiette and Roxy Migurdia, a friendly adventurer who becomes a surrogate mother figure to him. But all of this changes when the cataclysmic disaster known as the Mana Disaster occurs when teleportation devices across the world malfunction, causing various people and even entire kingdoms to be scattered across the world. With the world itself being thrown into total chaos, Rudeus finds himself in an unfamiliar land with two other notable survivors: the fiery Eris Boreas Greyrat and the Superd Ruijerd Superdia. The next few episodes would see Rudeus and his new companions traverse the many lands of the world, witnessing the various cultures and customs of the world's many peoples and creatures. But the adventure also leads Rudeus to further confront other aspects of his troubled past.

Unlike most other modern fantasy series, almost every facet of the world feels lived in, with different nations speaking completely different languages, having their own unique relationships with each other, and even varying cultural traditions. But what makes it all stand out is that Studio Bind never feels the need to rush you through these wonders. In fact, the entire production team takes time to explore this world rather than getting to the grind, allowing it to feel even more immersive than other modern fantasy fare.

Rudeus is far from a perfect hero; his low self-esteem, immaturity, and emotional trauma can make him challenging to root for. The series is surprisingly upfront about this, showcasing that real character development takes time and happens incrementally over years, not conveniently within a few episodes.Depending on how much you like the protagonist and accept his growth, it may affect how much you like the rest of the story.

Fortunately, there are other excellent characters in Mushoku Tensei. Eris starts as a brash, arrogant, and spoiled noble but eventually learns to control her anger and becomes a skilled swordsman. Her transformation, showcased most intensely in the final arc, is genuinely remarkable and one of the most enjoyable aspects of the series. Similarly, Ruijerd is a frightening warrior at first, his reputation as a bloodthirsty killer tarnished by prejudice. As the plot unveils his troubled past, the character becomes one of the most empathetic and pivotal performers in the second half of the story.

Roxy is always charming, and Sylphiette’s friendship with Rudeus is sweet and heartfelt, providing the narrative with much-needed emotional depth. Even the other parts are executed well, with Paul being an endearing, if irresponsible, father figure to Rudeus. His behavior is arguably too forgiving of his son’s misdeeds, and the narrative seldom makes him correct in his judgments, making him more relatable. Most anime series would’ve made the father a one-dimensional caricature of a stern and severe parent, but Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation subverts expectations.

Visually, Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation is, on the whole, a top-rate television anime. The studio Bind has managed to use a large amount of theatrical conventions. First of all, it should be said that action sequences in the series are not the only attraction. Many details of the surroundings are rendered with great precision. The character hairstyles move in the wind, clothes are of different textures, they speak with quite expressive faces. In addition, there are exciting magical effects. Such things as spells have a certain weight, volume, and shape. They are not just a bunch of pretty colors that float in space. Moreover, the camera works in a way that makes it easy to track the character movements.

It goes without saying that the battle scenes are well staged. But not less impressive are the dialogue scenes, for example, during evenings, when the heroes sit around a campfire or eat at home. It is noteworthy that even a long silence in which no one speaks, the characters themselves change their faces, and it is presented with exceptional precision. This is where confidence and solidity in animation show strength. It would be wrong not to mention the quality of the series.

The composer, Yoshiaki Fujisawa, has created one of the best scores to come out of a fantasy anime in recent memory. Instead of overpowering the show’s proceedings with brash, unsubtle orchestral arrangements, the music blends in with the emotional tones of the world, the diverse musical styles of the regions, and even simple motifs that enrich the narrative.

One of the most impressive highlights of the anime is the very creative use of openings. Instead of having a typical standalone opening theme, many episodes blend the music into the natural flow of the show’s events while Yuiko Ohara sings them in a manner akin to folk songs. This helps create the impression of an ongoing journey that the viewer is following.

The other major strength of the anime is its excellent attention to detail in the soundscape. From the satisfying kasha of magic being cast, the immersive backgrounds that help sell the location, and the powerful, precise sound effects for fights.

Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation: Season 1 Blu-ray Movie, Video Quality 

Released on Blu-ray by Crunchyroll, Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation is presented in 1080p MPEG-4 AVC encoded high- definition. This Blu-ray offers a superb HD presentation of Studio Bind's work, the colors are all vibrant without being over blown, the greens of the forest, the blues of the sky, even the warm looking lights indoors are all well rendered.

Fine detail is generally good throughout the series, with character outlines being crisp and well defined, with few traces of compression, with only the smallest amount of compression on the more detailed objects like seen in the backgrounds. There's a healthy amount of gradient shading and magical effects that don't get distorted by compression either, while the blacks are deep and full without loss of detail, the entire series maintains a sharp contrast that brings out the beauty of the painterly animation style. A pretty impressive feat considering how good the source material already looked. Blu-ray offers a rewarding presentation quality that fans will cherish.

The disc offers English Dolby TrueHD 5.1 and Japanese Dolby TrueHD 2.0 lossless tracks with English subtitles.

The English 5.1 mix is well balanced throughout the magical combats, ambient soundscapes, and music aspects. The surrounds are utilized effectively (especially during the journey sequences and larger-scale battles), while the dialogues are reproduced clearly and distinctly.

The Japanese stereo track is also well-recorded, as it accurately conveys the series dramatic impact and maintains a good balance between the conversations, music, and sound effects.

Both tracks are free from egregious flaws, with the dynamic range reproduced cleanly and the encoding quality being absolutely impeccable. Blu- ray rewards with superb lossless encoding.

Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation is arguably an acquired taste and it does not come across as simple and straightforward. Its leads are far from being likeable, some decisions are bound to leave you disappointed, and an anime's take on the isekai genre is undeniably niche. Yet, this is one of the more enjoyable fantasy adaptations to come around, with stunning designs, deep lore, a powerful cast, and a well-balanced script.

Crunchyroll's physical release of Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation Season One is a must-own for fans, thanks to its excellent quality, both in terms of the video and the accompanying lossless audio soundtrack. The disc's packaging is also up to standard and will look good on any collector's shelf while also ensuring that its contents are kept safe and secure for fans. In short, a fantastic product for fans of the series.
