Jackass Forever Blu-ray Movie Review

Reviewed by Martin Liebman April 21, 2022

Somehow the Jackass franchise just keeps going, now celebrating 20 years of bringing Idiocracy to the big screen. The troupe, here with some new faces and still under the charge of fearless leader Johnny Knoxville, continues to hit below the belt and lower the bar by upping the antics and raising the stakes in a series of skits that usually involve genitalia and a whole lot of private parts pain.

Official synopsis: Older and grayer but not wiser, Johnny Knoxville and the gang are back for another outrageous round of stunts and bad ideas. With new friends and loads of celebrity guest stars, the crew take pranks to ridiculous lengths where absolutely no one is safe and all senses are frayed. From exploding port-a-potties to hockey pucks to the nuts and performing magic for an unamused bull, 'Jackass Forever' is a hilarious roller coaster ride like you’ve never experienced before.

As might seem obvious from the above synopsis, there really is no "synopsis." This is a compilation piece with zero narrative or character building. In fact, it's more apt to tear its players down, usually by making them fall to the ground in agonizing pain after a stunt gone "right." That is because the goal of the movie, and the franchise, is to successfully pull off as many potentially harmful stunts as possible, which include attracting a swarm of bees to a man's penis (there is full-frontal nudity in the film), squishing a penis between transparent planks affixed together with screws, being slapped in the penis by a flip flop affixed to a remotely controlled mechanical arm, and using a penis as a stand-in for Godzilla (the film opens with a decent quality fan version of a Kaiju film). The short and the long of it is that there's a lot of opportunity for audiences to find pleasure and humor in sex organ agony.

What the film is, then, is essentially a combination of brain-dead antics and, at times, complexly engineered gags that still only strive to elicit humor from the lowest common denominator. The cast is all about doing their part for king and country, er, for the almighty dollar and celebrity status. Beyond the penis gags, there’s the old "shoot a man out of a canon" trick (as seen on the poster art, which is admittedly a cool photograph and about the best thing about the movie) as well as some fun with physics and milk and paintball guns, not to mention snakes and tarantulas and even a lubed-up slip and slide.

Jackass Forever Blu-ray Movie, Video Quality  4.5 of 5

Paramount's 1080p Blu-ray presentation of Jackass Forever is very good. The image is crystal clear. It is sharp and revealing, capable of revealing skin and hair details well beyond faces and arms and into the nitty-gritty private areas that are seen in abundance throughout the film. Natural environments are crisp and various mechanical objects that are part of the stunts are so sharp that viewers can study them down to the last screw and button. There are some lower grade cameras at work in order to squeeze footage from areas where a full-size camera cannot go, so there will be some lower grade material interspersed throughout, but those limitations did not factor into the final score. Colors are abundant and beautifully rendered. Skin tones are a key, and they are very lifelike while natural greens pop and clothing (yellow T-shirts, for example) are full and leap off the screen. Black levels are solid. Noise and encode issues are practically nonexistent. Fans will be very pleased with this Blu-ray.

Jackass Forever Blu-ray Movie, Audio Quality  4.5 of 5

Paramount's DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 lossless soundtrack offers a fine audio mix that is both detailed and aggressive. The opening Kaiju sequence offers well pronounced bass, crisp gunfire, and excellent surround integration and overall prioritization and balance. Bees swarm around during one key sequence with impressive surround distinction to the point that one can almost hear individual bees moving from speaker to speaker. General low-end engagement is balanced, musical reach along the front and through the rears is balanced and clarity is strong, and basic location atmosphere is nicely integrated. There are a few examples of sound elements lacking total finesse, but for the most part everything is in good working order. Dialogue is clear and centered for the duration.

Jackass Forever Blu-ray Movie, Overall Score and Recommendation  3.5 of 5

If the title Jackass Forever is anything to go by, there might very well be yet another installment for this franchise in the future. No doubt Knoxville and crew are already dreaming up new ways to punish a penis and inflict maximum damage without doing any permanent harm. Fans of the series will enjoy this installment. It's more of the same, for better or for worse, so if anyone enjoyed the previous installments, then give this one a go, and for those who disliked the previous installments, go ahead and skip this. The video and audio presentations are top-notch. Supplements consist of a number of deleted skits and gags.
