Dennis Dugan's "Happy Gilmore" (1996) arrives on 4K Blu-ray courtesy of Kino Lorber. The supplemental features on the release include new audio commentary by author and filmmaker Bryan Connolly and podcaster Wilson Smith; several deleted scenes; outtaakes; and vintage trailer for the film. In English, with optional English SDH subtitles for the main feature. Region-Free.

Kino Lorber's release of Happy Gilmore is a 4K Blu-ray/Blu-ray combo pack. The 4K Blu-ray is Region-Free. However, the Blu-ray is Region-A "locked".
Please note that some of the screencaptures included with this article are taken from the 4K Blu-ray and downscaled to 1080p. Therefore, they do not accurately reflect the quality of the 4K content on the 4K Blu-ray disc.
Screencaptures #1-30 are from the Blu-ray.

The release introduces an exclusive new 4K restoration of Happy Gilmore, completed at Universal. In native 4K, the 4K restoration can be viewed with Dolby Vision and HDR grades. I chose to view it with HDR. Later, I spent time with its 1080p presentation on the Blu-ray.
I liked everything that I saw on my system, in native 4K and 1080p. In native 4K, the entire film looks as if it were completed several weeks ago. It boasts incredibly healthy, lush, and enormously attractive visuals. The density levels of these visuals are outstanding too, so if you have a big screen, you will like how solid they remain a lot. (For what it's worth, this is the same type of quality you will get from Kino Lorber's 4K Blu-ray release of Uncle Buck). Color reproduction and balance are terrific. The party that graded the new 4K master could not have done a better job because the vibrant outdoor and the more nuanced indoor and nighttime footage look equally impressive. The HDR grade is very effective. It noticeably helps the dynamic range of the visuals, and in many areas, the superiority of the native 4K presentation is undeniable. However, the 1080p presentation is what I consider to be 'reference quality' as well, so this truly is a win-win situation. I did not encounter any encoding anomalies to report in our review.

There are two standard audio tracks on this release: English DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 and English DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0. Optional English SDH subtitles are provided for the main feature.
Happy Gilmore has a lot of great music, so a solid lossless track is desperately needed for an optimal viewing experience. The 5.1 track is that kind of solid track. Indeed, it has a terrific range of dynamic nuances and plenty of oomph, plus it opens up the film very well in many places. To be honest, it is a bit surprising that the 5.1 track is this effective because there is no conventional action material. The dialog is clear, sharp, and always easy to follow.

4K BLU-RAY DISC

Adam Sandler's brand of comedy is an acquired taste. Some of it is decent, and most of it is seriously poor. I think that Sandler's best funny character is in Happy Gilmore, but a lot of what works well in this film involves solid contributions from several fine supporting actors, like Christopher McDonald and the late Carl Weathers. I am unsure if Kino Lorber's 4K Blu-ray release materialized because of Happy Gilmore 2, which was just released, but if you are a fan of the original film, it should be on your purchase list. It brings an outstanding 4K makeover of the original film, recently completed at Universal. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
