Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? - Season 4 Part 2 Blu-ray Movie Review

Reviewed by Neil Lumbard March 16, 2024

Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? IV – Familia Myth continues the action-packed adventures of the dungeon action-epic. Created by Fujino Ōmori, Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? IV – Familia Myth delivers more of the goods action anime fans have come to expect from the popular series. The collection includes episodes 12-22 of the saga.

Produced by Kazuki Ueshima (My Love Story With Yamada-kun at Lv999, The Executioner and Her Way of Life) and Yūichirō Shiji (Sword Oratoria: Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? On the Side, Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon?: Arrow of the Orion), the series features original design work by character designer Suzuhito Yasuda. Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? IV – Familia Myth features animation produced by J.C. Staff (Aria the Scarlet Ammo, A Certain Magical Index). Action fans looking for spectacle will find a lot more energetic adrenaline packed into the collection.

Hestia (Inori Minase) and the team find themselves in new situations and with danger looming in the horizon. The stakes are high and the mission before Hestia and the others in the Hestia Familia is a significant part of the equation throughout each step of the way. The Hestia Familia has recently managed to reach the deepest and lowest sections of the dungeons.

Despite reaching some new uncharted areas, the team finds more peril than expected on their latest missions. The dangerous stakes of the dungeon mission reach new heights for Hestia, Ryū Lyon (Saori Hayami), and Bell Cranell (Yoshitsugu Matsuoka). Monsters are appearing before them in strange, mysterious, and ominous manners – surprising them at every turn of the dungeon – even when monsters are usually supposed to not appear based on the dungeon levels.

The mission becomes increasingly chaotic as the team faces a big challenge on floor 37. Yet the ultimate danger looms in battle on floor 27. Can everyone live to tell the tale or will it be the end of the road for some of our heroes?

The character designs by Shigeki Kimoto (Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon?: Arrow of the Orion, Sword Oratoria: Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? On the Side) are an impressive technical quality of the production. The designs are well done and add to the sense of style that the production exudes. There is something noteworthy about the style of these characters and it does manage to add something special to the series.

The animation is one of the most wonderful qualities of the production. There is something simply marvelous about the art style. The art plays a huge role in the series and why the fans have been dedicated to the series over the seasons. The animation looks crisp and creative and there is an energetic style that adds something compelling to the table. The art direction by Jeong Ryeon Kim (Jujutsu Kaisen, Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? IV) is one of those impressively done elements.

The chief animation direction by Masahiro Fujii (The Familiar of Zero, The Pet Girl of Sakurasou) and Shigeki Kimoto (A Certain Magical Index, Sword Oratoria: Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? On the Side) is also essential to the series aesthetic. The team of animators involved on Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? IV – Familia Myth continue to prove how the series works as an action-epic with the quality action scenes well illustrated. The dungeons and the background animation play a big role in the series production, too. These aspects of the series continue to play out and make a big difference in how the series succeeds.

Without such a dedicated team of animators at the helm, where would the series be? Things wouldn’t be the same without the creative gel of the behind-the-scenes animation crew and the work these animators bring to provide Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? IV – Familia Myth with the qualities considered essential to the story and the journey that audiences have come to expect from Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? IV – Familia Myth.

The cinematography by Shingo Fukuyo (The Melody of Oblivion, Selector Infected Wixoss) is another clear highlight and essential backdrop of the production. The visuals are compelling and there are creative elements to the cinematographic style that help the production work. Fukuyo does a reasonably good job in the cinematographer seat and the role helps to bring out the best in the animation.

The score composed by Keiji Inai (Burn The Witch, The Misfit of Demon King Academy) is one of the main highlights of the series. The score is a decent one and it adds a sense of action-packed jazz to the series production. The music helps to provide the right backbeat to the adrenaline-infused sequences and certainly doesn’t slow down the tempo for these epic battles. Composer Inai has fun with the series score and this continues to help the series bring the goods fans are looking for.

Written by Fujino Ōmori (Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon?: Arrow of the Orion, Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? V) and Hideki Shirane (Aria the Scarlet Ammo, Shakugan no Shana), Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? IV – Familia Myth continues the adventures of the characters and the dungeon explorations. Fans will be pleased to see more of these epic quests. A continuation that will please series die-hards.

Directed by Hideki Tachibana (The Honor Student at Magic High School, Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? III), Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? IV – Familia Myth offers up plenty of action and epic moments to keep audiences wondering about where the series heads next. Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? IV – Familia Myth finds footing with its fanbase and the series director understands the audience and the unique formula the series has managed to make noteworthy across the seasons.

Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? - Season 4 Part 2 Blu-ray Movie, Video Quality  4.5 of 5

Released on Blu-ray by Sentai Filmworks, Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? IV – Familia Myth is presented in 1080p MPEG-4 AVC encoded high-definition in the original television broadcast aspect ratio of 1.78:1 widescreen. The high-definition presentation is an impressive quality of the production. The series animation looks lush and creative. The art style is beautiful and bold. The animation certainly shines with quality artistry and the animators bring something special to the production. Line art and background art is crisp and detailed looking on the release.

One of the best things about the Blu-ray disc format is the high-quality encoding and the fact that it continues to remain superior to streaming video platforms. Streaming video services tend to offer video presentations with a lower quality bit-rate compared to the physical media counterpart. For video enthusiasts seeking the best possible picture-quality for the presentation, the Blu-ray disc format rewards with an even more immersive and enjoyable experience for the perfectionist in everyone.

Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? - Season 4 Part 2 Blu-ray Movie, Audio Quality  4.5 of 5

The release includes a selection of lossless audio options: English DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0 and Japanese DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0 (with English subtitles). The lossless audio quality on the release is enjoyable and adds something special to the experience. The encoding capably reproduces the series original sound direction by Jin Aketagawa (anohana: The Flower We Saw That Day, Bodacious Space Pirates).

The audio is energetic and bold – even for a stereo audio presentation. Blu-ray disc remains superior to streaming video services with even more robust lossless audio (and streaming services for series only provide lossy – non-lossless audio presentations). For someone wanting the absolute best quality out of the media, the physical media format remains superior. Sentai Filmworks rewards fans with good audio quality.

The set also doesn't include an o-card slipcover or other physical goodies.
