Overview

Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? - Season 3 (2020-2021)

The rules of the Dungeon always seemed simple: Enter, avoid traps, kill monsters and gather treasure. But when Bell rescues a young vouivre, Wiene, who is capable of speaking, it changes his understanding of what the Dungeon's monsters could be. Unfortunately, the discovery of the Xenos, a secret group of monsters who all speak, reincarnate, and are capable of rational thought, isn't welcomed by all. With many of the Familias remaining determined to destroy all monsters on sight, Bell and the Hestia Familia quickly find themselves confronted on multiple fronts, even as other Familias work in secret to exploit the Xenos for their own sinister gains. And when the Xenos are forced to defend themselves, all hell breaks loose!

Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? - Season 3 Blu-ray Movie Review

The third season continues the adventure.

Reviewed by Neil Lumbard July 21, 2022

Is It Wrong to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon III picks up the paces with more action-packed fun with the original cast of characters. The series finds new direction in the third season with some unexpected development in the dungeons. The series is based on the popular light novels by Fujino Ōmori. An impressive adaptation, the anime features animation produced by J.C. Staff (Aria the Scarlet Ammo, A Certain Magical Index). Is It Wrong to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon III comes produced by Noriyuki Akita (Suppose a Kid From the Last Dungeon Boonies Moved to a Starter, I've Been Killing Slimes for 300 Years and Maxed Out My Level), Ryūtarō Kawakami (Waiting in the Summer, Sword Art Online: Alicization - War of Underworld), and Yūichirō Shiji (Sword Oratoria: Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? On the Side, A Certain Scientific Accelerator).

The dungeons aren’t what they used to be. Bell Cranell (Yoshitsugu Matsuoka) finds himself facing new obstacles when he finds himself the hero: saving the life of Wiene, a monster of the dungeons with an unexpected gift – the ability to speak. Learning that a demon can be capable of the gift of speech, Bell and Hestia (Inori Minase) discover new secrets of the dungeons and the journey shifts into brand new directions as a result. Most of the Familia want to destroy all demons of the dungeons but this strange development leads to conflict between Bell and the others. Yet another discover causes even more of a commotion: an entire group of speaking demons under the Xenos group. Can the demons be trusted or will their fates be sealed?

The series ultimately continues to be a success with fans worldwide because of the compelling cast of characters. The characters drive the storytelling and the experience necessary to make the series a unique entry in the action-anime genre. The leads drive things forward: Bell Cranell and Hestia intertwine with a sense of urgency. The characters pave the way for the story to unfold well.

The animation impresses in spades. The art style is one of the most unique reasons to experience Is It Wrong to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon III. The production features superb art direction by Yasuhiro Okumura (Flying Witch, Planet With). Something is inherently outstanding about the series art. Featuring an enormous sense of whimsical animation, the animators brought forth their “A” game.

Better on Blu. (Blu-ray, of course!)

Even the character designs are noteworthy. From the original character designs by Suzuhito Yasuda (Ai Tenchi Muyo!, Durarara!!), Is It Wrong to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon III has uniquely stylized designs. Many anime series have generic looking character designs but this one stands out as a more unique entry. The anime character designs are handled by Kimoto (Sky Girls, Sword Oratoria: Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? On the Side), who certainly was up for the task.

The cinematography by Shingo Fukuyo (A Certain Magical Index, The Executioner and Her Way of Life) imbues a sense of scale and scope to the production. The visual component is essential to the series. Cinematographic style is apparent in each frame. The use of color and framing is superb.

The score composed by Keiji Inai (Alderamin on the Sky, Burn The Witch) doesn’t manage to live up to some of the other components of the production. Nonetheless, the score fits the anime well and is a reasonably engaging score for the action- packed anime. While it wouldn’t make a top-tier rank of anime scores, Inai did a reasonable job with the material.

Written by Hideki Shirane (Aria the Scarlet Ammo, Date A Live), Is It Wrong to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon III has an energized sense of adventure. This is one of the key reasons the series has become such a big hit. The anime has a bigger sense of scale than many other action series. The writing reflects this with adequate balance of action and drama (while the characters still have interesting moments to shine likewise).

Is It Wrong to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon III is directed by Hideki Tachibana (Alice in Borderland, The Honor Student at Magic High School). The series might not be one of the best anime series around (compared to the likes of My Hero Academia or Fairy Tail) but it does manage to entertain well and provide audiences with a fun experience. Director Tachibana does a solid job of expanding the series with the third season.
