Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? - Season 2 Blu-ray Movie Review

A fun action-anime for genre enthusiasts.

Reviewed by Neil Lumbard July 21, 2022

Is It Wrong to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon II continues the action-packed adventure of the fantasy anime series. The events of the first season continue as the saga finds itself heading in to some new territory. Based on the light novels created by Fujino Ōmori, Is It Wrong to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon II is an enormously popular anime with a huge following. The series featured animation produced by the acclaimed animation studio J.C. Staff (Aria the Scarlet Ammo, A Certain Magical Index). Produced by Noriyuki Akita (Suppose a Kid From the Last Dungeon Boonies Moved to a Starter, I've Been Killing Slimes for 300 Years and Maxed Out My Level), Ryūtarō Kawakami (Waiting in the Summer, Sword Art Online: Alicization - War of Underworld), and Yūichirō Shiji (Sword Oratoria: Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? On the Side, A Certain Scientific Accelerator), Is It Wrong to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon II certainly amps up the action in the adventurous second season of the hit anime production.

Bell Cranell (Yoshitsugu Matsuoka) soon discovers new obstacles in his journey. The ruthless God Apollo decides to declare war against Hestia (Inori Minase). The stakes are raised considerably. Can Bell and Hestia manage to defeat their enemy and rise forth? With mounting debts and plenty of distractions, Bell and Hestia set forth on a new mission. What will happen to the entire Familia if the God Apollo manages to win?

The series is partly so entertaining because of the interesting cast of characters. The central leads are interesting and manage to add to the production. The duo of Bell and Hestia make the series more enjoyable. As the leads of the series, Is It Wrong to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon II finds a solid tone between comedy and action-drama with the characters playing a big role in that success.

Another compelling element of the production can be found with the original character designs by Suzuhito Yasuda (Ai Tenchi Muyo! , Durarara!!), which dramatically enhance the experience of the anime. The anime character designs contributed by Shigeki Kimoto (Sky Girls, Sword Oratoria: Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? On the Side) bring these characters to life in a truly compelling way.

The animation on Is It Wrong to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon II is creative, energetic, and fun. The art direction by Yasuhiro Okumura (Flying Witch, Planet With) is a huge reason for the success of the production. Is It Wrong to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon II continues to expand on the first season. Featuring great background animation, Is It Wrong to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon II is a superbly animated production with much to contribute to the anime medium.

"Is it, though?"

The cinematography by Shingo Fukuyo (A Certain Magical Index, The Executioner and Her Way of Life) works wonders with the production as well. The visual elements of Is It Wrong to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon II continue to provide the series with a lush and ambitious backdrop. The art style is an enormously detailed and textured one. The cinematography enhancing the experience with an outstanding use of color and visual finesse.

The original score composed by Keiji Inai (Alderamin on the Sky, Burn The Witch) works well within the framework of the production. While the score for Is It Wrong to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon II isn’t the greatest, the music works well within the context of the action-adventure. The music certainly fits the production and enhances the tone. A solid effort by Inai (even if it doesn’t reach the heights of the best anime scores by composers like Yoko Kanno).

Written by Hideki Shirane (Aria the Scarlet Ammo, Date A Live), Is It Wrong to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon II is an anime series with a compelling concept. The series has a unique pitch. The storytelling brings the characters together for action, comedy, and adventure. The journey is one which is well enhanced by the screenwriters. There is plenty of one-liners and character- moments to make the viewing more entertaining.

Directed by Hideki Tachibana (Alice in Borderland, The Honor Student at Magic High School), Is It Wrong to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon II brings the series in a new direction as the program continues to expand upon the foundation. Is It Wrong to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon II will appeal squarely to fans of the original season. Established fans will be quite pleased with the second season continuing to offer audiences action-packed excitement.
