Independence Day Blu-ray Movie Review

Reviewed by Martin Liebman April 10, 2020

20th Century Fox and Best Buy have collaborated on a store exclusive SteelBook release for the smash hit alien invasion film 'Independence Day.' The disc and digital content is identical to that found in the 2016 wide release, which includes the newer 1080p scan. See the 'Special Features and Extras' section of the review below for more on the SteelBook's look and feel.

Independence Day Blu-ray Movie, Special Features and Extras  4.0 of 5

The SteelBook's front and rear exteriors are textured and flat and will not hold fingerprints or slip around when in the hand. The front panel features a large alien mothership filling the top third. "In the words of my generation," a single jet fighter is flying towards the alien craft's primary weapon, which is open and illuminated. Semi-reflective blue and stars are behind. The film's title appears below: "ID4" is in familiar silver type while the title spelled out, in white, appears below. "Twentieth Anniversary Edition" text is also included below both. The bottom of the SteelBook's front panel is practically black. On the rear, Will Smith's Captain Steven Hiller stands on rocky terrain and an alien mothership has crashed behind him into a city. Dark clouds linger overhead. A white print studio logo and legalese cluster appear bottom left. The image is fairly gray and bleak overall and has a semi-reflectivity about it. The spine is a flat black with the film's title center. Silvery Fox and Blu-ray logos appear top and bottom, respectively.

Inside, the digital copy code is tucked underneath the left-hand-side tabs, as are a pair of glossy Alita: Battle Angel promotional cards. The two discs, one UHD and one Blu-ray, are situated on the right in staggered-stacked formation. The inner print is a two-panel spread that features one of the alien fighter craft flying almost vertically on the left hand side. Behind it, and across the entire two panels, is one of the sprawling motherships. There's a slice of sky, which is filled with a handful of other alien craft, and earth horizon below. The whole image is gray and blue and not very exciting.

Independence Day Blu-ray Movie, Overall Score and Recommendation  4.5 of 5

Fun movie, great Blu-ray, OK SteelBook. There's not much going on here, and where's the UHD SteelBook? Hopefully one day.
