Galaxy Quest Blu-ray Movie Review

Reviewed by Martin Liebman September 17, 2019

Paramount has released, exclusively to Best Buy, a SteelBook version of Director Dean Parisot's terrific 1999 'Star Trek' spoof film 'Galaxy Quest.' The disc appears to be straight-up identical to that which Paramount first released in 2009. See the 'Special Features and Extras' portion of the review below for more on the SteelBook's look and feel.

Busybusybusy. "Stylistic subtlety" is not in this SteelBook's vocabulary, at least on the front. The glossy, slick, and smooth SteelBook features a predominantly purple background, darker in places, lighter in others. The film's title is centered below the midline axis. Actor names Tim Allen, Sigourney Weaver, and Alan Rickman appear above it. Those three actors, in character, appear above, each firing a futuristic weapon, though not in the same order in which the actor names appear below them (Weaver is in the middle but Rickman and Allen are on opposite sides). The Protector zooms out towards the viewer from under the "Q" in "Quest." A few of the primary Thermian characters appear bottom right while the film's villain, Sarris, looms at the top. Some alien terrain appears in the background at the bottom and some sparks float about the bottom portion. It crams in just about everything. The rear side is much more streamlined. The purple color remains. The words "Never Give Up, Never Surrender" appear in a similar shaded purple in large block letters, filling the majority or rear panel space. The Protector is flying above the top of the letter "R" in "Never." A little legalese appears bottom center and presumably a model number appears bottom right. The spine features the same purple color. The film's title appears center (along with an NSEA logo) and a Paramount logo can be found at the top.

No digital copy is included. The lone Blu-ray disc is situated on a hub on the right. "Overly simplistic" is in the SteelBook's vocabulary in regards to the inside. The inner print is...next to nonexistent. It's a black color with orange sparks floating around the bottom half of each panel. A wide Protector bridge overview might have worked well.

Galaxy Quest Blu-ray Movie, Overall Score and Recommendation  4.0 of 5

It's a shame Paramount didn't take the opportunity of the film's 20th anniversary to do anything more than throw the old disc in a disappointingly designed SteelBook and make everyone feel all that much older. The film is terrific and the existing Blu-ray is still of a good quality, but why there hasn't been a 4K issue at this time is anyone's guess. For first-time buyers and hardcore SteelBook collectors only.
