Doctor Strange 4K Blu-ray Movie Review

Reviewed by Jeffrey Kauffman April 10, 2024

Disney / Buena Vista and Marvel have partnered with Wal-mart for some exclusive SteelBook releases in the so-called Mondo X series, many of which through the years have offered some pretty spectacular design efforts. As I've been discussing in a number of Wal-mart related SteelBook reviews lately, some of the films being offered in this current slate have actually had prior SteelBook releases (with different designs) when Best Buy was in the exclusive SteelBook business, and that's the case with Doctor Strange 4K as well. Both this SteelBook and the older Best Buy SteelBook duplicate the disc and digital contents of the wide release.

Both of the links above will direct you to Martin Liebman's reviews of the wide 4K release and the subsequent Best Buy SteelBook.

Doctor Strange 4K Blu-ray Movie, Special Features and Extras  3.5 of 5

On disc supplements are detailed in the above linked reviews. This latest slate of Mondo X SteelBooks offers a rather wide array of design aesthetics, and in that regard, this particular SteelBook may subscribe most closely to that comic part of Marvel Comics, with a kind of cool cover image the duplicates an "old school" Doctor Strange comic book panel look. A magical sigil extends from the left of the front panel to the right of the rear panel, where something just slightly sinister seems to be glaring in tones of purple. The mylar O-ring is actually kind of minimalist with this release, with again a kind of "old school" font for the title in green and a trademarked portrait of a very Cumberbatch-esque doctor also in green on the back. The second photo shows the O-ring next to the actual SteelBook, while photos 3 and 4 document how the O-ring looks on the SteelBook. I haven't been especially impressed with any number of interior panels on recent Wal-mart exclusive SteelBooks (not necessarily just Disney / Buena releases), but I have to say this particular illustration (seen in the seventh photo) is actually kind of fun and again in a retro way recalls old comic books. Discs also carry the Mondo X branding along with artwork. A digital copy is included.

Doctor Strange 4K Blu-ray Movie, Overall Score and Recommendation  4.0 of 5

Both some of the recent Lionsgate Wal-mart exclusive SteelBooks and now some of the newer Mondo offerings for Disney / Buena Vista and Marvel have offered to my eyes superior designs to any pre-existing SteelBooks of the same films, and I have to say that continues with this release of Doctor Strange, where the retro comic book stylized artwork is nostalgic but kind of ironically cheeky at the same time. I've recently mentioned in a review how a lot of home theater aficionados tend to be "rabid completists", and even those who got the older Best Buy SteelBook release of Doctor Strange 4K may find this newer release appealing enough to double dip. Recommended.
