Disclosure Day 4K Blu-ray Movie Review

The latest film from Steven Spielberg ('Close Encounters of the Third Kind', 'Schindler's List'), returns to 4K UHD disc in the new 'Disclosure Day: Limited Edition SteelBook 4K' courtesy of Universal. The film stars Emily Blunt ('Edge of Tomorrow'), Josh O'Connor ('Challengers'), Colin Firth ('The King's Speech') and Colman Domingo ('The Four Seasons'). The release sports impressive technical specifications alongside a modest assortment of extras, which include a tribute to legendary and influential composer John Williams in light of his 30th collaboration with the director. A Blu-ray disc, an embossed slipcover, and a Digital Code redeemable via Movies Anywhere are also included. When Dr. Daniel Kellner (O'Connor), trusted with protecting and hiding the facts, decides he must share the truth about aliens with the world, he goes on the run with Jane (Eve Hewson), and the pair are relentlessly pursued by the single-minded Noah Scanlon (Firth), a man who isn't afraid to use dangerous otherworldly technology to stop them. When TV weather personality Margaret Fairchild (Blunt) starts manifesting unusual abilities, she finds herself compelled to find and assist Keller on his mission. Further aided by Hugo Wakefield (Domingo), Keller and Fairchild will need to bring all of their skills and resources to bear if they are to reveal the biggest secret in our civilization's history.

Disclosure Day 4K Blu-ray Movie, Special Features and Extras 

The cover of the new Disclosure Day: Limited Edition SteelBook 4K draws its inspiration from poster art associated with the film. Here, the shape of the cardinal which was more subtly transposed over Emily Blunt's face on the standard release is much more pronounced and obvious as it reveals a portion of her face in what is otherwise a simple field of black. Inside the cardinal's silhouette, we see a close-up her hyper blue eye. Her face being inverted relative to the orientation of the bird's shape, her dark eyebrow is seen below her eye instead of above it. A prismatic lens flare creates a faint and softly defined circle around the image. In the top left corner, the director's last name and the film's title are found in the film's typical font. In the bottom right corner, we see that Spielberg is given story and directing credits, while David Koepp is credited with writing the screenplay. The back cover of the SteelBook maintains the same design structure. In the middle of a black field, the silhouette of a deer, another animal from an important moment in the film is found. The white shape is rendered with a speckling effect, and detail that suggests the animal's hide is also discernable. In the bottom left corner are logos for Amblin and Universal, while a product number is found in the lower right. The spine is again a black field with the film's title in the center, and Universal's logo at the bottom. The bulk of the exterior has been given a matte finish, although the main image on the front and back, as well as the film's title have been enhanced with some spot glossing to help them pop. There aren't any embossed or debossed elements.

Opening the SteelBook, the tabs on the left hold the Digital Code. On the right side, the 4K UHD disc and the Blu-ray disc are stagger-stacked, each on its own hub, with the 4K UHD disc on top. Removing all of the contents reveals a panoramic two-panel image from the film of Josh O'Connor's Dr. Daniel Kellner standing in the middle of a crop circle that spontaneously formed around him. The image is dominated by warm amber hues and stands in contrast the the stark and almost exclusively black-and-white palette of the SteelBook's exterior. Not an overly elaborate design, it is in keeping with the poster art, providing images that are both haunting and pertinent to the film without revealing or spoiling any important plot points. It's a sharp-looking SteelBook.

Disclosure Day 4K Blu-ray Movie, Overall Score and Recommendation 

While not explicitly or officially connected to director Steven Spielberg's other two science-fiction films, Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977) and E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (1982), his latest film, Disclosure Day, is the capstone of his science-fiction efforts, inclusive of a project he shot on 8mm when he was just 17. This film spends the bulk of its focus not on an alien encounter, but trying to bring the knowledge of the existence of aliens to the world, and the justification for doing so despite the potential consequences. The film ends before it can address the interesting and compelling questions of how individuals, cultures, nations, and religions would respond and react to such news, though the film does take a run at such notions on a micro level. Disclosure Day is deliberately paced and tense, and the film is buoyed solid performances from Colin Firth, Colman Domingo, Emily Blunt, and Josh O'Connor, and a moody score from John Williams. Though the standard edition has been available for well over a month, for those who have yet to acquire a copy of the film, or for dedicated SteelBook collectors, the stark and striking Disclosure Day: Limited Edition SteelBook 4K comes highly recommended.
