Paramount has released the highly anticipated (for me, anyway) UHD release of 1995's 'Clueless,' written and directed by Amy Heckerling and starring Alicia Silverstone, Stacey Dash, Brittany Murphy, Paul Rudd, Jeremy Sisto, Breckin Meyer, and Wallace Shawn. New specifications include 2160p/Dolby Vision video. Paramount has recycled the legacy DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 lossless soundtrack from the 2012 Blu-ray while also carrying over that Blu-ray's supplemental content. All extras can be found exclusively on the bundled Blu-ray disc; nothing is included, new or old, on the UHD itself.

The included screenshots are sourced from a 1080p Blu-ray disc.
Clueless isn't, well, clueless on the UHD format. In fact, it's quite smart. Maybe not the brightest or sharpest on the market, but it's a
well versed visual experience, what with its spiffy new 2160p resolution and Dolby Vision color grading. It makes the grade, but does it achieve high
honors? Read on to find out.
The 2160p resolution really brings out the best in the movie. Paramount has released a transfer that is naturally sharp, crisp, and visually sumptuous. It
retains a light and attractive grain structure, giving it a natural filmic appearance. Details are abundantly sharp and refined, and the movie is a treasure
trove of visual delights around Cher's more resplendent home, throughout school clasrooms and hallways, and various other locales scattered
throughout the film. Clothing definition is crisp and well rendered with fine point seams and threads always in visual range. Skin details delight with the
finest in precision clarity and accuracy, showing fine blemishes, slight stubble, and other details with intimate lifelike clarity. This is cinematic quality
through and through.
For as good as the 2160p resolution is, and as flatteringly filmic as the picture looks in that arena, I'd argue that it's the Dolby Vision color grading that
truly makes this a next-gen release. Clueless is one of the most iconically colorful movies of the 1990s, and the Dolby Vision grading brings out
the best in every tone. Clothing is the obvious highlight here, offering exceptional vibrancy to reds in particular, with various red clothes and accents
bold and brilliant without ever looking blown out, too hot, or otherwise unnatural. The color is bright, bold, and refined compared to the Blu-ray, but it
never looks unnatural. Instead, reds are beautifully punchy and wondrously accurate. Really, that extends to the whole color spectrum: blues, yellows,
oranges, natural greenery, whatever is in play always looks nothing less than delightful. Skin tones are perfectly accurate and
healthy, and white balance is satisfying. If there is a flaw, black levels can stray a hint in both directions, towards slight crush and minor paleness, and
grain can look ever so slightly snowy against black (look around the top of the frame around the 41:25 mark). Any issues I have with the black levels,
however, is really grasping at straws for a "negative" to counter the otherwise glowing review. Overall, I could not be more pleased with the Dolby
Vision color grading, and the transfer as a whole.
Just as important, the print appears free of any blemish. If print spots or stray fibers are there, I didn't notice. Likewise, the encode is perfect. There
are no artifacts or anything to detract from the watch. I can't imagine Clueless looking any better. High honors, dean's list, however you want
to say it: Clueless makes the grade.

Please click here for a full review of the included DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 lossless soundtrack. Paramount has simply repurposed it from the 2012 disc rather than offer a newer configuration.

As far as extra content goes, there's nothing new. All of the extras are included on the Blu-ray disc, which is identical to the 2012 issue. There are no
supplements, new or returning, on the UHD disc. Below is an outline of what's included. Please click here for full review coverage.

It's pretty fashionable these days to drop a movie onto UHD with no new audio and no new extras, and that is exactly what Paramount has done here. Nevertheless, I think fans will find it a worthwhile upgrade, The resolution boost and the color gains are really effective to bring the best out of the movie, especially its abundantly colorful palette. The legacy 5.1 soundtrack remains solid enough, and the carryover extras are fun. There is a companion and concurrently released Steelbook which adds a few fun physical goodies to the package. That one is my personal recommendation, but fans wanting the more "basic" release can't really go wrong here. Highly recommended!
